I mentioned the other day that I bought a couple of CD singles from Aztec Camera . The Crying Scene is exactly what a CD single should aspire to be: something old, something new, something borrowed, something else. These are the tracks: The Crying Scene (something old, being that the single was a well known track from the album, Stray ) Here's the video True Colors (something borrowed, being a pleasant cover version of the Cybdi Lauper song) [...]
Greetings from the land of the ill. I made the brutal mistake of rushing to kill the intense burning sensation which accompanies eating hot peppers with a cold glass of milk before remembering that my body cannot digest lactose. I feel like I'm on the brink of an terrible vomit-filled evening. Too bad, I was having a really good day. I hung out in Pasadena for a while, and then almost fell asleep in my notebook trying to write a short story. Have you ever tried to write something while half-conscious? I'll tell you right now, I started on page [...]

For the fifth instalment in my trawl through my old CD singles collection, I'm going a bit mainstream. Certainly a lot less cool. You don't get many tracks on music blogs by these artists, and maybe there's good reason for that. But that doesn't mean that they're entirely without merit and I'm not going to gloss over the less glamorous regions of my music stash. These are a mix of the good, the alright and the frankly bizarre. First up we have Athlete . Although they're now [...]
A few hundred thousand of these are going to be passing my way over the next 24 hours, and it's not gonna be a bundle of fun. For those of you who haven't picked up some threads here and elsewhere, I've a job that currently involves me being heavily involved in the management and administration of the elections which on Thursday 3rd May will possibly result in a new government for Scotland and a

I can't believe these bands managed to pull off these songs. Most of these are just wrong , when you think about it. A twee Joy Division cover? Steve Harley set to strings? Anyone from Scotland singing Van Halen? Yup, I know. Twilight 'flick yer lighter or I takes yer thumbs' Zone stuff, but lovely with it, really. They care . I'm sure you know the original artists, but take a minute to visit the bands if you fancy. Atmosphere - Sterlin [Joy Division cover] [...]
I feel a bit of a fraud describing at least one of today's offering as 'fantastic'. The fact that new releases coming out on vinyl retail for as little as 99p means I'm prepared to take a risk on something. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And I guess, even if I don't like it, but I post it here at TVV and someone appreciates it, then it hasn't been a waste of money. And so dear readers
This one's for my Baby Chutney on this Valentine's Day. I love you, Chut Chut! Okay, now that the rest of you have finished vomiting in your mouth a little bit..."Love" was Aztec Camera's third full-length album and the first to be completely centered around songwriter Roddy Frame, since he ditched all the other band members to work with mostly American studio musos in an attempt to finally break the U.S. market. Out was the folksy, acoustic strumming and in were the electric guitars, horn section [...]
Back to the sound of young Scotland again, such a critical force in the early 1980s independent scene. Aztec Camera were basically the Roddy Frame band. They started out on the ultra-cool Glasgow Postcard records alongside Orange Juice and Josef K, releasing a couple of singles, and then released the classic Scottish pop of 'High Land Hard Rain' on rough trade in 1983, including the
