While other musician in sub-genre either faded to nostalgia or mainstream, Conor Oberst and the gang stuck to course and released a whiskey-soaked alt-country masterpiece that seems to have just fallen out of the band members' brains effortlessly. I suppose it's cliche to compare floaty folk like Azure Ray to Mazzy Star, but I'm doing it anyway. In actuality, it's much more interesting in terms of songwriting, but the music shares a superficial similarity: Creeping foreboding, a deliberate backbeat, and wonderful, shoegazey vocals.
