By Vincent Rendoni I'm visiting my family in Washington. I've only been at my mother's house for about four hours, but I'm already reaching for a couple of beers. I take them from the outside fridge, and speed past barking dogs and bickering relatives to my mother's deck. I close the sliding glass door and suddenly it's quiet. I light a citronella candle to fend off mosquitoes and crane flies, sit myself in a lounge chair out of sight from my family, and take in the sunset over Puget Sound. I have this one rule: I don't drink alone. Except [...]

Surfacing from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, UK, Shacklock decided to change their name to an extremely notorious Boston Red Sox + Braves / NY Yankes baseball player of the same name in the legend known as Babe Ruth. Originally named after the guitarist Alan Shacklock, their patent heavy sound is marked by powerful vocals from Janita Haan and the fullest of arrangements and riffs by Alan Shacklock. 'King Kong' on this display is a well bodied instrumental delivering expert bass and lead guitar playing, with a slightly dodgy sounding keyboard score filtering throughout. Somehow, it just about works... [...]

When I first heard the rumblings about this on Twitter I was instantly excited given the kind of year Mr. Gartner has had production wise and this EM does not disappoint. Two hours and one mega tracklist have given us an insight to the sound that is Wolfgang Gartner. Listening to this live was quite the experience, and Wolf's productions stand out by far amongst an already stacked lineup of tunes. He truly "went undertaker on that ass" you don't want to sleep on this tracklist after the jump BBC Radio 1 [...]

This is a compilation of Babe Ruth session material recorded for the BBC in 1973 & 1974 and subsequently presented by legendary British radio DJ Alan Freeman as part of his weekly 'rock show' sometime after, as the material was featured as one of his 'archive sessions'. Babe Ruth were actually banned from the BBC by producer Bernie Andrews whilst recording for the John Peel Show in 1974. Their official site does not explain why, however the ban was lifted in 1975, not that surprising when you consider the quality of their music. [...]

The rain finally poured down on the fourth day (July 9th) of Ottawa Bluesfest. At least it wasn't as bad from the past three days where it was stinking hot. The weather made it cooler and easiser to enjoy the music. There was a interesting lineup on the Friday night. The acts that I saw were: The Soirée The Planet Smashers John Butler Trio Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles [...]

In light of recent events, and it being May 1st and all, I thought I'd show a little solidarity with mi amigos del sur . So for better or worse here's b-boy breaks/sample classic The Mexican by Babe Ruth . El primero del hoy is VG cover faves EL Michels Affair funky instrumental cut. Baker Brothers feat Katie Holmes , Bombers and Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop pull off what [...]

Classic hip-hop breaks don't come much better than this.... Babe Ruth - The Mexican

A couple of tracks from some excellent Azuli compilations that arrived in the post today, I'm Satisfied from James Brown's disco era with a groove to die for (the guitar lick gets me everytime) and a break heavy Roger Sanchez re-edit of the classic Babe Ruth - The Mexican: Babe Ruth - The Mexican (S-Man's B-Boy Battle Edit)(MP3) : Alt Link James Brown - I'm Satisfied (MP3) : Alt Link I've bought the Roger Sanchez , Kenny Dope [...]

I probably posted most of this compilation when I previously mentioned Hip House as it's a strong theme on this album, so I'll try to avoid the obvious tracks. Humanoid - Slam : A fairly ropey Hip House entry, the sample at 3:01 is especially cringeworthy in the context of the rest of the track. Sterling Void - Runaway Girl : Sterling Void's It's Alright was the first mp3 I posted here, although I've since deleted that post as there wasn't much substance to it, and it outlined a version of this [...]
Life is good – very good – but I'll be damned if living it doesn't sometimes feel like juggling a feral kitten, a soiled diaper (#2), and a skinned mango, all while riding uphill on a unicycle with a flat tire. I believe it was the sweet brother Kanye who implied, "Life is a bitch, dependin' how you dress her," so if this is indeed the case, I think I want life to be naked. That way, there are no surprises and I know exactly what I'm dealing with. But if not naked, then I'd really [...]
Being on the road right now this post is somewhat travel inspired. I just arrived in to Toronto last night and it is surprisingly unhumid and pleasant. If any of you are ever in Toronto, The Social down on Queen Street West is holding it down. I arrived in from Winnipeg, Stabitoba yesturday. After a nice and short trip there. Did you know that Winnipeg, Manitoba is the murder capital of Canada?? Enough about my cross Canada travels.... This first one was inspired by eating out for Mexican food [...]

we got to the restaurant quarter after 9 and there were hardly anyone there. true, it's still early, but it was also sunday night; either way, it didn't look like there's going to be a crowd. which suited us fine. beyond tired after 4 intense days running a conference for over 1,000 people, we welcomed the chance to keep to ourselves. monica , carlos 's wife, order a bunch of appetizers for us. she pointed to me and told the waiter to hurry before i starved to death. the duck tacos, looking [...]

Sarolta Zalatnay, Sarolta Zalatnay (Finders Keepers 2007) Andy Votel's reissue imprint brings Hungarian beat-freak heavy funky rock to the masses. Probably my favorite label right now (next on the want list: Selda ). Sarolta Zalatnay - "Hadd Mondjam El (with Skorpio)" Igor Wakhevitch, Docteur Faust (EMI 1971) Don't actually have the vinyl of this French composer's avant-rock opus .... but it's too good [...]
