I think it's possible that Backwords recorded their latest EP while serving burgers at a barbeque. Their latest EP, 'By the Neck,' captures a particular moment of sunshine in their campfire-ready anthems where the beers are still cold and the sun is still warm, and this is all thanks to how intimate and close-knit this bunch of friends is. Backwords is like the beginning of spring, a cool breeze blowing as blossoms that had been lying dormant finally begin to poke their heads above ground. Smooth and airy, with a small amount of grit, this band manages to be both catchy and buzzy without being overwhelmingly poppy or shoegazy (a difficult line to walk). Oupa, the solo project of Yuck member Daniel Blumberg, teamed up with Tony Crow to release a couple live tracks including a cover of Porcelain Raft's "Backowrds". Like the original, Oupa and Tony Crow's cover of "Backwords" is elegant and haunting. Dropping the etherial synth featured in the original, this version makes use of a simple live setup that is a perfect blend of Blumberg's moving voice as well as powerful and deep piano chords. [Photos by acidjack] Backwords, of Brooklyn, are one of those bands that manages to sound classic and completely new at the same time. Some of their tunes fall solidly in the gentler folk camp; at other times they can get psychedelic and jammy. This opening set at Glasslands showed off both sides, with their approachable, melodic material, mostly from their current record By the Neck , predominating.
