Today's summer solstice was beautiful in Boston. Sunny, 80F, light breeze. But I am sad. Why you ask? Because tonight I should be enjoying Joey Cape and Cory Branan in concert, but the tour was cancelled. Frown. I've never seen Cape in concert, but he has a 20+ year musical career that spans punk, alternative/indie rock, folk, and even alt country. From his punk band Lagwagon , who will tour Europe at the end of the summer. Lagwagon - Whipping Boy.mp3 [...]

Joey Cape At a time when bands trim the Florida leg from their summer tours as a nod to the creaking economy, three exceptional singer/songwriters are headed to the Sunshine State. Vinyl Collective and Suburban Home Records CEO Virgil Dickerson recently conducted a lengthy video interview with Joey Cape of Lagwagon , Bad Astronaut , Me First and the Gimme Gimmes , & The Playing Favorites fame. Among the topics discussed are plans surrounding the fate of the remaining unreleased Bad Astronaut songs, where Lagwagon fits in on Joey's ever growing list of musical obligations and the effectiveness of the male mustache as a deterrent against crazed/annoying fans. Check out the whole [...]

Thanks to Peter over at Coast is Clear for showing the way to the link for "Radiation," by Portland's The Epoxies . I've liked this song for quite some time now but didn't know where it lived. Tracking it down to the group's label, Fat Wreck Chords (whoa, too clever, man) put me in touch with other enjoyable bands, some of which I knew, most of which I happily did not. Here are several that tickled my fancy. Royal we'll post more in the near future. Click band names [...]
I can't listen to Bad Astronaut without thinking about the tragedy of former Bad Astronaut and Lagwagon drummer Derrick Plourde committing suicide in 2005 prior to the completion of their third album, Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment. Joey Cape, the singer and songwriter for Bad Astronaut (and Lagwagon) eventually picked up the pieces and was able to finish the album. Admittedly, he considers it an album with a split personality: those tracks recorded before the loss of Derrick and those recorded after his loss. Bad Astronaut was the indie rock side project that Joey and [...]
