Photos by Dan Schenker Photography When you go to a rock show on a special holiday, you never know what to expect from the crowd. When that special holiday is Cinco de Mayo, you really don't know what to expect from the crowd. An uneasiness settled in when I first arrived at The Wellmont Theater, located in the heart of Montclair, New Jersey, for that very reason. Were attendants there to support the bands and have a good time or get drunk out of their minds? I was in no mood [...]

Twin Forks at The Drake was one of the best concert experiences I'll ever have. I had the opportunity of meeting an inspiration, interviewing an incredible band, and watching an extremely energetic and fun gig. The reason I started AMBY was because of my love for writing, and the main person to fire this passion is Chris Carrabba. I've been a massive Dashboard Confessional fan for years, so meeting my biggest inspiration was a truly surreal experience for me. As much as we're huge fans of DC, Twin Forks are a totally different project, and yet are just [...]

If Beck-era "Sea Change" was actually written by Kevin Devine while he was high as hell and listening to a lot of Fiona Apple, he may've been Danny Malone. The Austin singer-songwriter just dropped the video for new single "Spiderlegs," a '90s-inspired piece showing Danny in his element -a barn where he actually resides and hosts a lot of shows- with just about everything a man would ever need: women, drinks, drugs, and a guitar. The low-lit scenes of Danny and his arm candy cutting lines and sipping from the bottle, kissed with jerky stop-motion and blurred out shots [...]

If you've been reading SKoA for a while you might be aware that I (Shey) have a bit of a love for everything Andy Hull, whether it be Manchester Orchestra , Bad Books or Right Away, Great Captain! Today I was happy to see an email in the inbox in regards to Bad Books and a session featuring Andy and Kevin Devine recorded at Baeble HQ . It features them performing some tracks acoustically along with some interesting interviews between tracks. They perform "Forest Whitaker", "You're a Mirror I Cannot Avoid", "It Never Stops". [...]
For three bands some critics might consider to have a cult following, Bad Books, The Front Bottoms and Weatherbox certainly seemed like superstars as they played to a sold-out crowd last night at World Café Live. Fans got to the venue ere there and stayed late. California rockers Weatherbox opened the show, followed by eclectic ... Continue reading

1. Father John Misty - Fear Fun C roce, Skynard, Nilsson, Fogerty and Morrison had a baby and named it Father John Misty. Right out of the gate this album rocketed to the top of my most listened to list. Hooked in by "Well You Can Do It Without Me"'s Nilsson-like flavor and then drawn into the much deeper and more complicated workings of stunners such as "Funtimes in Babylon", "Only Son of the Ladies Man", and... fuck it, the whole album is fantastic. [...]
Bad Books , an indie rock collaboration between Brooklyn's Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull, are hitting the road on an east coast tour to promote their sophomore album "II." Devine and Hull alternate in songwriting and lead vocals, giving this album a dynamic edge in pace, voice, and mood. Their lead-off single "Forest Whitaker" (streaming below) starts with a catchy whistling intro that leads to an uplifting pop melody that contrasts uniquely with Hull's dark lyrics. The band is starting their tour in Thompson House Newport, KY on February 13th and making their way east, swinging by New [...]

KD, McDowell and Hull team up to give one of Bad Books II's heavier moments the acoustic treatment, courtesy of PASTE . On a sidenote, I wonder how much NIKE is paying Andy to consistently keep reppin their brand.
True fans of music spend countless hours searching for that next great song, album or artist, whether it be online or in a local record shop. The beautiful thing about music in today’s age is that technology has created an infinite supply of great music that is available to us at the click of a mouse. How perfect is that? We can discover a brand new artist on the opposite side of the globe in seconds without a radio or a music television channel. It only makes sense that a website so dedicated to this gorgeous universe of music would [...]

One of the benefits of being part of the Peenko empire but not ultimately responsible for its strategic direction, is the opportunity to write about events and releases with which Mr Peenko gets himself dubiously involved with a degree of critical freedom. So, if Randolph's Leap ever do drop that much-threatened reggae EP, I'll certainly not feel bound by ties of brand loyalty! But in the meantime, this event - organised by an unholy blogging trinity comprised of Peenko, Ayetunes and Scottish Fiction - promised three bands at various points on the curve, playing together. From The Bad Books first [...]
