In fact, it can be a little hard to pay attention to the music with all the visual excitement, but that's exactly what makes it so much fun. Penguin Prison headline the show. Recommended Show: TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 2010 BAD BRILLIANCE @ SANTOS PARTY HOUSE 96 Lafayette St New York, NY 10013 FREE, 7PM The one and only time we saw Bad Brilliance , the show was short, but it was also outstanding. For the first time performing anywhere as Penguin Prison--in full band format no less, not just main songwriter/producer Chris Glover and a ton of knobs and switches--this past Thursday night at New York's intimate Mercury Lounge, the 35-minute set that...

**EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE** It's not all remixes and club thumpers here in the land of the Beast. Sure we've been known to toss a few slow jams, country crooners' tunes and acoustically sentimental cuts out every now and again, and today is no different. Our current crush is Penguin Prison , and rightfully so. With an undeniably awesome "how does he continue to crank out perfect pop songs" appeal, he's got us by the heartstrings with a live rendition of [...]

We have to admit we were having trouble recollecting what made 2009 memorable, but after sifting through hundreds of nominations we pulled the best for the final reader's poll! A lot of people asked us why we're polling and the answer is twofold. First, it allows us the opportunity to know what you, the reader, is into and thus better serve you in the future. Secondly, it's a good way for us to check out the artists you've suggested that we've never heard of! The poll will remain open until [...]
Being an airhead isn't an insult for Bad Brilliance . That is, if you're talking about the guy in the red suit with a balloon head that says "BAD BRILLIANCE" in the form of a happy face. What's that? That's brilliant. As are the sparkling synthesizer hip hop tracks. Rap artist Bad Brilliance has worked with the likes of Andrew W.K. and Girl Talk . Awesome collaborations can only mean a fantastic starting off point. And now you can check him out at [...]

Bad Brilliance | Santos Party House | July 28, 2009 Bad Brilliance's set the other night clocked in at around fifteen minutes, but that's about all that was needed for one of the best performances I have ever seen. It was really all about the image. The red carpet thrown down in the center of the audience, the insane costumes, the dancing girls, the faux security, and the confetti, all these things made for a wild live show that made me wish more bands spent a little effort on the [...]

YACHT is the latest act to release a record on DFA and they celebrated with a raucous party at Santo's Party House last night (7/29). Opening the show was Bad Brilliance , which is the alter-ego/character created by photog/artist Andrew Stasser (see photo above). Stasser donned the giant suit and balloon head and was backed by a female singer and a rapper who wore a full-headed wrestling-style mask. They were backed by dance tracks but the lyrics seemed like they were made up on the spot and it appeared that there had never been a rehearsal. Stasser spent [...]

Just back in Stockholm from a great trip to New York. Inspired of the Big Apple in all kind of ways, I wanted to give you some new music from the New York area. The Golden Filter is not new to me, but the remix they do of Polly Scattergood 's "Please Don't Touch" is quite new to me. You can hear the Golden Filter sound driving the song forward. Also hear out the original, even if Polly is from London. Polly Scattergood – Please Don't Touch (The Golden Filter [...]

Before we launch into some pretty rad stuff for you, I'm gonna take a quick moment to pause, and bask in the glory that is this, the 1300th POST , here in the land of the Beast. Now on to the music. Johnny Herbert is a dude from [somewhere], and we got a sweet little message from the lad this weekend. And we're pretty pumped that he sought us out and provided us with the perfect soundtrack to our new accomplishment. [...]
Next week, anyone with a shred of sense will be traveling to Manchester, Tennessee for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Ok, so maybe that's not entirely accurate, but a lot of people will be going, including yours truly, many CoS staff members, and a slew of the publicists and artists who supply us with the mp3s needed to create the Friday Mixtape each and every week. Needless to say, creating a new Friday Mixtape for next week, isn't going to be all that easy, and thus, we've made the decision to scrap next week's edition and resume the week after. [...]

Here's what's known about Aleister (or at least, what's broadcast about him on the internets): he's British, at first glance he looks a bit like Marilyn Manson what with the white makeup, he's tight with Andrew WK and as such has performed a number of times at Santos Party House, he's British and he's been working on a mixtape (Damn! with AWK, our boy B-Roc and someone named Bad Brilliance (see next paragraph). Through his MySpace, what we can discern is that he's making truly unique music, moving from rhyming to Grateful Dead covers with surprising [...]
