All you fans of the heavier/faster side of Austin's rock scene will surely find yourselves rocking to the killer new tunes from Austin's Sweet Talk . The band has just released their record, Pickup Lines , and you really need to go get your hands on it. It's a blend of crunchy punk rock, filled with hooks and call-and-response anthems. But, why I love those dudes, you will also get to see [...]
Ugh, after Friday, I'm having a hard time getting motivated, but Austin's Free Week must go on! The weekend's got some good happenings going down, so I won't take up too much of your time, I'll just encourage you to participate in rock n' roll throughout the town...in some fashion or another. Cheers to the New Year, Austinites. Saturday: My Education , Residual Kid, Fleshlights , Tia Carrera...and more @ Red 7 [...]
Date Monday, November 19th Location Red 7 Doors 9:00 PM Tickets CHEAP Personally, this is one of the best line-ups I've seen in some time, with two of my favorite bands blasting into town to rock it out at Red 7 on Monday night. Kicking off the night are Bad Sports , featuring a line-up split between Austin and [...]

I had my camera. I took almost 4,000 pictures. That seemed like a lot, but once I factored in the number of bands, the odd things that have to be documented, the friends gathering for shenanigans and the eight long days involved, it really wasn’t surprising. I haven’t done the final tally, but it would be fair to say that I saw part of a set from around seventy bands. It is my turn to give a rundown on bests and worsts of The Conference . The many highs were tempered by very [...]

The hot mess that is SXSW is officially over, though the effects are still lingering, and may for some time. We're all different people here at ATH, so we wanted to offer you our varied opinions on the festival, so read on about my personal reflections on the fest... Best Bands: Snowmine / Bad Sports : Snowmine jammed it out at our party, and they just sounded beautiful. Their organic songwriting won everyone over, and I'm hoping the love spreads. Bad Sports rocked the Beerland patio in [...]

Bad Sports Album: Kings of The Weekend (Buy) Label: Dirtnap Records Bad Sports - I'm In Love With Myself Tweet

The Texas punk rock scene is alive and well, especially with the likes of Bad Sports, Video, Mind Spiders , etc making waves, in 2011. But, there's a well kept secret going on in Houston with the Energy , a band who recently released their album Get Split on Team Science Records . While they've got a little bit in common with the likes of Black Flag, they have a steadier drumming section, and seem to have cooled on the ferocity, making their [...]

Contributed by Trevor Meyer Austin punk rockers, Bad Sports have an awesome sound. It’s true that parallels can be drawn to The Ramones, but it’s undeniable that Bad Sports have a focused, modern sound. This is Garage/Punk with likable melodies and no BS. “I May Be Cruel” comes from their 2011 album, Kings of the Weekend . Spin it. Bad Sports - I May Be Cruel Bad Sports [...]

For me, 2011 has been an excellent reemergence (in my life, at least) of the punk rock. One of the most recent albums I've been spinning a lot lately has come from Denton's VIDEO. The band is comprised of members of Wax Museums and Bad Sports, bands I've already raved about. They just released their album, Leather Leather, on Play Pinball! Records, and it's nothing but a rocking adventure, harkening back to the grittier days of rock n' roll. On the track below, the song just builds and builds, exploding in the chorus in dramatic fashion, giving you an impression [...]
Oh man, is 2011 over already? It is indeed, which means End of Year list time! Of course, that means it's time for you to tell us where we went wrong, but on this list, we're thinking we got it pretty right on. You'll notice we expanded our list to a Top 15 of Texas Artists, as we thought our state did a great job, musically (not politically) speaking this year. I'll admit, it might be a little Austin-centric, but we're based in the town, so get word a lot faster. Apologies to Houston and San Antonio, as your scenes [...]

This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn't all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop. Don't forget to hit up the bottom of this post and listen to two tracks from the playlist! "Torn Curtain" by Television [...]
