The Texas punk rock scene is alive and well, especially with the likes of Bad Sports, Video, Mind Spiders , etc making waves, in 2011. But, there's a well kept secret going on in Houston with the Energy , a band who recently released their album Get Split on Team Science Records . While they've got a little bit in common with the likes of Black Flag, they have a steadier drumming section, and seem to have cooled on the ferocity, making their [...]

Contributed by Trevor Meyer Austin punk rockers, Bad Sports have an awesome sound. It's true that parallels can be drawn to The Ramones, but it's undeniable that Bad Sports have a focused, modern sound. This is Garage/Punk with likable melodies and no BS. "I May Be Cruel" comes from their 2011 album, Kings of the Weekend . Spin it. Bad Sports - I May Be Cruel Bad Sports [...]

For me, 2011 has been an excellent reemergence (in my life, at least) of the punk rock. One of the most recent albums I've been spinning a lot lately has come from Denton's VIDEO. The band is comprised of members of Wax Museums and Bad Sports, bands I've already raved about. They just released their album, Leather Leather, on Play Pinball! Records, and it's nothing but a rocking adventure, harkening back to the grittier days of rock n' roll. On the track below, the song just builds and builds, exploding in the chorus in dramatic fashion, giving you an impression [...]
Oh man, is 2011 over already? It is indeed, which means End of Year list time! Of course, that means it's time for you to tell us where we went wrong, but on this list, we're thinking we got it pretty right on. You'll notice we expanded our list to a Top 15 of Texas Artists, as we thought our state did a great job, musically (not politically) speaking this year. I'll admit, it might be a little Austin-centric, but we're based in the town, so get word a lot faster. Apologies to Houston and San Antonio, as your scenes [...]

This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn't all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop. Don't forget to hit up the bottom of this post and listen to two tracks from the playlist! "Torn Curtain" by Television [...]

Below is a quick list of some shows worthy of your attention. Friday: Curtis James & Grape Street @ Skinny's Ballroom - FREE!!! Saturday: Bad Sports , Act Rights - Matinne Show @ 1 PM @ Beerland Mind Spiders , Birthday Suits , Shit Creek , @ Beerland John [...]
Bad Sports' three-chord ever-so-slightly-punky, hook-filled pop recalls late '70s British pop-punk with a vengeance. Bad Sports' three-chord, ever-so-slightly-punky, hook-filled pop recalls late '70s British pop-punk with a vengeance and this new tune "Can't Just Be Friends" evokes the tuneful blast of Northern Ireland's the Undertones most specifically. And they are even a power trio like Britpop gods, the Jam. But this contemporary band hails from the currently fertile musical hotspot of Denton, Texas, not from across the pond. Bad Sports wowed the crowds at SXSW this year and are...

Date Saturday, August 27th Location Beerland Doors 900p Tickets CHEAP You all know how much I love my punk rock, and probably the best place in town to enjoy such bands, for me, is Beerland . It's the perfect place to catch the gritty power-pop of Bad Sports , the Texas band who've been blazing away [...]

Goddamn! That's probably the most encapsulating expression that can be applied to Bad Sports newest platter, Kings of the Weekend . The follow-up to their eponymous 2009 record is such a burner that its impossible not to move erratically from the first moments the stylus hits the wax. The fidelity crackles with electricity and somehow the Marked Men's Mark Ryan, who recorded this one, was able to translate the band's undeniable magnetic energy to tape in a way that I haven't felt since Nobunny's First Blood hit me last year. Brimming with bubblegum hooks, scoundrel smirk and [...]

Our stream today comes from Denton, TX-based Bad Sports in the form of their new full-length for Dirtnap Records , Kings of the Weekend . The band features members of High Tension Wires , Mind Spiders and many others. You can check it out on their Punknews.org Profile .

Rock music should be fun, so why is so much of it not? Bad Sports know this and they're out to teach bad bands a lesson. "Teenage Girls" rubs it in those bands' faces a bit, and Bad Sports know this. It may, in fact, be a reason they selected this particular moniker. Their style of pop-influenced garage-based punk is most welcome. "Teenage Girls" is off Bad Sports' new LP, Kings Of The Weekend . Listen to the song and you'll hear [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Whatever's in the water in Denton, Texas, people better start to take notice, as the area continues to push out great garage-pop rockers, and Bad Sports are no different. Their second album Kings of the Weekend , this time on Dirtnap Records , is just an energetic burst of great licks, giving you exactly what you need-a solid dosage of good old fashioned rock n' roll. The band jumps right in with [...]

Pretty hard to fuck with analog-sounding lo-fi, power chords and the chorus "Teenage girls dancing in the street." Bad Sports' Kings of the Weekend (holler at you later, Wavves) is out on Dirtnap on Aug. 16 and boasts production from the Marked Men/Mind Spiders' Mark Ryan, whose latest record is pretty great, too. By Maxwell Silver The Fresh Tracks mixtape series has really exploded since we fired up the first installment last year. So, like Ray Davies of The Kinks screams in the title track of the band's splendid 1981 LP release: "give the people what they want." A pummeling 2:02 is all Bad Sports needs on this new track, "Teenage Girls" (via My Old Kentucky Blog ) to get me grooving to an ass-shaking dose of melodic punk. The Denton, Texas trio is releasing Kings of the Weekend via Dirtnap Records on August 16th. This is as straightforward as it gets, filled with a super fuzzy 50's bubble gum vibe at the epicenter of its edgy and raucous shell. True to the band's punk roots, [...]
