"I'm looking for something that'll…break through. You know?" James Woods' Max Renn yearns in David Cronenberg's 1983 cult classic Videodrome . Oh, how things have changed. In today's day and age, we've already drowned in media. It's swallowed us. We're nothing but a bubble amidst one infinite, engulfing abyss. Intimidated? You should be. With each passing second, you're losing opportunities to take advantage of a culture that's moving ahead and at an exhausting rate. You could very well be alone…left behind…abandoned. Terrified yet? Yes? Well, that's more like it. -Michael Roffman President/Editor-in-Chief [...]

Bad Veins first caught my eye when they opened for Frightened Rabbit a while back. Since then the band's debut self-titled album has been a go to LP for when I don't know what I feel like listening to. Because of the success of the first album I've been waiting with eager anticipation for the release of the follow up album called The Mess We've Made . Today we have first sight and sound from that album. "Dancing On TV" is the first single from the album which has received a video before an audio [...]

Cincinnati pop-rockers Bad Veins showed off their aptitude for crafting catchy, high-flying pop hooks and earnest boy-meets-girl songwriting on their 2009 self-titled debut. On April 24th, the pair will return their sophomore LP, The Mess We've Made , via Modern Outsider Records. "Dancing On TV" is the first single off the record and comes complete with a '70s-inspired music video. What starts out as a goofy play on an old episode of American Bandstand shifts decades and turns into a full-on reenactment of a-ha's " Take On Me " video. Check it out below. [...]

Edinburgh's We Were Promised Jetpacks released their sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach last fall via FatCat Records to critical acclaim. In this special, Friday edition: The Wiggles get Rewiggled , discover Analog Rebellion, and we resume our Blogophilia re-posts with Volume 18. Rewiggled? If you've had a child in the past twenty years (or if you've been one in the last twenty), it's hard not to go by a bowl of fruit salad and proclaim it as yummy, yummy. Thanks to the Disney Channel, The Wiggles have left an indelible mark on children worldwide. It's hard to believe this Aussie act is 20 [...]

We resume our reposts of the Blogophilia series this week with volumes 8 and 8.5. Why 8 and 8.5? Well, I mixed these at the same time, and the tracks came from the same collection of songs I reviewed. Calling one 8 and the other 9 didn't feel right. We've also had a 12.5, and recently a 26.5 for the same reason. Like volume 7, these two mixes really capture the summer spirit. Volume 8.5 has a throw in from an "oldie but goodie." Enjoy... Blogophilia Volume 8 [...]

I'm feeling pretty good about this playlist, take the time to check out a few songs 1. Shiv Hurrah- All my teeth fell out I've got this bad habit of forgetting to give a track list to my friends when i burn a mix for them. At least five times i've had someone call me up and ask "who sings the song that goes 'i had a dream that all my teeth fell out as i was just about to [...]

A bit lost in the shuffle of SxSW was a show at La Zona Rosa on the Tuesday before the full on start of the Music Festival. The lineup featured an interesting combination of bands in town for the conference; Bad Veins, Royal Bangs and Two Door Cinema Club. Impressions of each and some pics after the jump, but I'll let you know now that Two Door was awesome… Bad Veins start, but photographers got two songs in the pit so I was in black out mode. I recall "Falling [...]

As part of their SXSW in NWA Series, Rogue is bringing one of our favorite new artists, Tristen, to town on Sunday, March 20th . The Nashville-based singer and her band, The Ringers, are setting out to support her fantastic debut record, Charlatans At The Garden Gate . I caught their set at The Empty Bottle late last year and was staggered by the heft that the live setting offered the already-great album tracks. Charlatans At The Garden Gate has recently received rave reviews from the [...]

We continue in a tradition and rename for the 6th year our radio at the beginning of new year. This time the new title of radio reflects our plans to visit SXSW this March in Austin. We hope to see even more great concerts like we did in year 2003 (Okkervil River, The Frames, Vic Chesnutt, Califone, Carissa's Weird, Liz Phair, ...). The biggest advantages of SXSW and its enormous quantity of bands is that it brings several bands that we consider to be fantastic, but the crowd in Austin does not seems to recognize it. We [...]

Now that the Fun Fun Fun Fest has come and gone, one could argue the 2010 festival season is official over. Upset? Depressed? Relieved? A combination of the three? This has been out for a while - it came with the bonus 123 from the Apples' new album - but this is the first time I've seen it offered for a free download. Bad Veins are fresh off some 2010 tours and ready to record their second album. Can't wait to hear what they [...]

I was never an Apples In Stereo fan. I always respected them but I never awaited their next release with fervid anticipation, I never bought their vinyl even though I already had the CD, and I never gazed upon their album art and contemplated what I could fish out of their graphics that would make a solid Apples tattoo. I think there was a cross section of indie kids that coexisted peacefully along side me while I grew up and they loved Apples In Stereo. I do, [...]
