Tonight in L.A., Eulogies and new Hot Half favorites Bad Veins will be playing a show at the Echo to benefit the Pablove foundation. This show's been blogged about everywhere from the Scenstar to Pitchfork to Filter and most hipster's have Twittered about it but regardless, this stunningly sad story deserves to be told on as many media outlets at possible. The show, as I said, is benefiting the Pablove foundation which was founded on behalf of Pablo Thraikill Castelaz, son of Dangerbird Records founder Jeff Castelaz. The foundation was formed [...]

[Happy July ... and happy birthday, Debbie Harry.] Dangerbird Records artists Eulogies [pictured] and Bad Veins head up the bill for a night at the Echo that benefits the Pablove Foundation [see yesterday's post]. ... At the Troubadour, Bill Callahan (ex-Smog) is joined by Drag City labelmates Bachelorette . ... Excellent lineup of local indie-pop bands at the Silverlake Lounge, including Go West Young Man , Marvelous Toy and the French Semester . ... Soul merchants Fitz and the Tantrums [...]

I think I might love Bad Veins . And I think you might too. From the second the vocals kick in on the opening track on their forthcoming, self titled release, I had an insatiable urge to consume the rest of this record as quickly as I could but, at the same time, the longing to take it all in as slowly as possible. Since receiving an advanced copy of their album, I've been listening to it nearly exclusively and perhaps the most remarkable thing about Bad Veins is the fact that this lush, orchestrated album [...]

An extra, final incentive to head out to the Echo tomorrow night. All proceeds go to the Pablove Foundation...
Details on funeral arrangements and a memorial service for Pablo Castelaz, the 6-year-old son of Dangerbird Records co-founder Jeff Castelaz who died of cancer on Saturday, have been posted on the PABLOg! website. In addition, it was announced today that the concert Wednesday night at the Echo featuring Dangerbird bands Eulogies and Bad Veins , along with Avi Buffalo , will be a benefit for the Pablove Foundation , the charitable group launched in the youngster's honor that benefits the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. [See flyer in sidebar to the [...]

Jenny Jimenez As I've been complaining to anyone who'll listen , the fact that it was the first of June yesterday - less than three weeks to Summer - and only ten degrees centigrade on my bike ride to work (that's 50 Fahrenheit for you residing in non-metric backwaters) was simply unacceptable. But maybe it's the result of some sort of climatological karmic balancing act to make up for one of the Summeriest records of the year so far, the almost self-titled debut (the record title has an "!" tacked on) from Seattle's [...]

The phenominal Bad Veins will be performing at this year's Forecastle Festival. Bad Veins have been making crazy waves since they came together in 2006, including USA Today calling them the best act at CMJ 2007 when they were up against the likes of Bon Iver, St. Vincent & others. Armed with a megaphone, guitars, keys, a telephone microphone, drums and a reel to reel named Irene, Gothamist claims "the two members in this band manage to sound like a full rock orchestra". Bad Veins is probably [...]

You know what the music scene/industry needs right now? More young people taking initiative bringing the new flavors to the forefront. Slowly but surely we're making our way in that direction, this lame economy isn't helping but you can't stop the inevitable. That being said, imagine my excitement when I heard one of my precious music buddies, Steph Lund and her partner Kristin Connor were starting a new company that's all about that new new! f o r t h e b e a t is a brand new events company breaking out on [...]

Our buds from Bad Veins signed to Dangerbird Records to release their debut full length album! The news leaked this weekend via this Dangerbird tweet . It has been a long time since we first told you about this great Cincinnati duo (wow, Oct. 2006!) and our congrats go out to Ben & Seb for this deal, the guys have put in alot of hard work to get this done, and I'm stoked to see what is next!

Cincinnati two-piece Bad Veins , who spent much of last year recording their album (some of it in L.A.) and played some impressive dates around town (including a September gig at the Viper Room), are signing to Dangerbird Records . The L.A.-based indie, home to Silversun Pickups , the Dears , Sea Wolf and Darker My Love , will probably release the debut from Ben Davis and Sebastien Schultz this summer. ☛ Other tidbits: The OC Register's Soundcheck blog has details on the re-emergent Galaxy Theatre. ... [...]

Saturday's Daytrotter/Take the Handle/SnowGhost Music showcase at Brooklyn's Glasslands Gallery had two things going for it: Wye Oak was on the bill, and it was in the afternoon. Hoping it might end my CMJ coverage on a much-needed high note, I camped out for most of the afternoon and heard some genuinely recommendable music at a lovely, mercifully couch-equipped venue. For starters, here's where my CMJ Bingo card stands at the end of the festival: [...]

So for me, CMJ kinda blew. Sure Crystal Castles were awesome. I'm a new fan of WhoMadeWho, Bad Veins and Heloise & the Savoir Faire. And Crystal Antlers rocked it all over the city. But my CMJ experience at first got off to a rough start . Then I hit the overwhelming fest for two nights. Friday I felt exhausted. Saturday I planned on going to the After the Jump day party, which was supposed to be at The Yard, then got switched to Market Hotel due to rain, then got cancelled [...]

-Crystal Antlers at Continental Army Plaza, Brooklyn I started off Wednesday with a non-CMJ show, part of Todd P 's week of free shows at the Continental Army Plaza in Williamsburg. Yes it was outside. Yes it was cold. But that didn't seem to put a damper on Crystal Antlers ' ferocious performance. These guys are a loud and gritty, somewhat oversexed, desert rock band from Long Beach CA, whose music may have felt more at home in the grunge era. They sounded really great outside, with the J [...]
