We're not always about entertaining your ears, we know you have eyes too – so check out this new batch of music videos streaming now. First up is Shakey Grave's new video for "Unlucky Skin" – it's terrifying, odd, and great all at once. The excellent kids of Room 125 Production at Lawrence High School did a session with Water Liars [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards , Music Appreciation Canvas Media For Bahamas "it's nice to be nominated" isn't just a press platitude. It actually really was nice to be nominated -- particularly where the prestigious Songwriter of the Year category at the Juno Awards was concerned. "I think that's kind of the big one," Bahamas, known on his ID as Afie Jurvanen, told Spinner during a one-on-one [...]

One of my fondest memories at SxSW 2012 was watching Bahamas at Antones at noon on Wednesday with a crowd of about 40 people. I attended with Woody, who was not yet a Bahamas fan. As Bahamas founder and lead singer, Afie Jurvanen, demonstrated his impeccable guitar skills on his electric Strat, Woody began to light up. As if sensing that Woody was converting, Afie seemed to stare directly at him as he crooned into the microphone. Woody leaned over slowly and whispered "He's singing straight into my soul right now." We had a quick laugh and then [...]

February 1st. Here in Halifax that means we're halfway through the two most winterriffic months we face as a tiny foot-like growth sticking out from North America into the Atlantic. We've just come off roughly two days of Snowicane (but sans snow and also RIP TGS ) type wind and rain storms which were preceded by a couple weeks of bitter cold, so I think we're all just about done with winter (the weather amirite guys??!?!). So then, a Friday afternoon video to lift the spirit with thoughts of sun & sand is in order I'd say. Preferably one [...]

Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi Scalpers and fans could be seen looking for spare Calexico tickets outside El Rey Wednesday night, a make-up date planned after a power outage forced the band to cancel last October’s show at The Fonda. Once back on stage, with fully-functioning electricity, Calexico immediately launched into the aptly named “Epic” off of last year’s Algiers. The Tucson-based group followed quickly with the rambunctiousness of Feast of Wire’s “Across the Wire” before returning to the latest album’s single, “Splitter.” “We missed you!” declared frontman Joey Burns, later adding “I [...]

Everybody's Got One , the new six-song EP by Bentcousin , is a mess. And I love it. The bum notes and questionable production values make the British duo's ramshackle project all the more charming. On the opening track "Bentpaperboy," Amelia Innit gently croons lines like "I never met a Catholic that I didn't like." The ingratiating acoustic piece recalls the dry wit of Belle and Sebastian. Amelia's twin brother Pat admires a girl named "Susan" and "my favorite LP" on the chaotic rocker "Slade." "I Quit You" is a [...]

Afie Jurvanen, or as he's better known by his stage name Bahamas , has released the visuals to his latest track "I Got You Babe." The video depicts a sunny day at a tropical beach, shot in slow motion, featuring all your typical beach staples: sunbathers, guys working out, a couple relaxing while sipping on a tropical drink. The chilled out setting and slowed down speed do fit the laidback vibe of the song, though the clip is admittedly a little odd. Bahamas is currently on tour with Calexico in support of his album, Barchords . Take a [...]
I could pretend to be cool, to be hip, to be omnipotent, but the truth is I spent about six months last year vacationing off the face of the earth, and I didn't hear nearly as much new music as I normally would have. Thus any claim that I could tell you the ten "best" [...]
Ricky Rozay was named boss of the year in 2012 and the Miami rapper is showing no signs of toning down his lavish lifestyle. Ricky Rozay and his Maybach Music Group crew jetted to Bahamas where they ring in 2013. The MMG chief performed in front sold out crowds in Nassau and Atlantis, before popping bottles of champagne to ring in the new year in St Thomas. Rick Ross Responds To Gang Read more [...]

If I told you John Mark Nelson is only 18 years old would you believe me? I know it's hard but it's the damn truth. And then what if I told you Waiting and Waiting is already is second album, a follow up to his 2011 debut Still Here. Writing this as someone in their mid-twenties (that was painful to say) it makes me look back and wonder where I went wrong. A recent graduate from Minnetonka High School, he's quickly becoming a must see show in the Twin Cities. His debut album [...]

Another year of music has come and gone, dense with wonder and goodness. I can't possibly articulate the qualitatively- best albums of the year, but I can mentally categorize into my favorites (something that has been a hot discussion topic this week with my musical friends). These are my favorite albums that were released in 2012 - tallied in a scientific manner of how long it took me to take the record off repeat. When I love something, I tend to love music furiously and unrelentingly, listening to it on repeat for weeks and months until I get sick [...]

As I've mentioned on many occasions, I keep a running playlist throughout the year. You've seen bits and pieces of it here but as 2012 comes to a close, here is the final product. Full of the singles that I listened to on repeat to the tracks I put on every mixtape this year and now with the added bonus of being influenced by the year end lists of my friends and contemporaries. It's all over the place genre-wise, but I think it is a pretty solid collection. Amanda Palmer - [...]
From the resilient folk of Bhi Bhiman to the poignant rap of Brother Ali and Oddisee, from Bob Dylan’s continuing lyrical excursion to the catchiness of The Dig and The Mowgli’s, here are my 20 favorite albums of 2012. Alabama...

As the year closes out, each day we're revisiting one of our favorite songs of 2012: Bahamas - "Lost In the Light" from the album Barchords - "the quietly soulful "Lost In the Light" is easily one of the best songs we've heard in a long, long time, a creeping Keith Richards-styled riff mixed with lovely backing harmonies..." More on Barchords below... [...]
Afie Jurvanen is the man behind Bahamas . Before striking out on his own, Afie cut his teeth playing for Feist , Jason Collette and Zeus -and this experience is evident in all aspects of his work. Afie and I crammed ourselves into his tour van after soundcheck with a hot cup of tea. It was fun to test his "Aw shucks" persona when I brought up some strange quotes from his past. Listen to our chat! the interview show with Bahamas [...]

Milo Greene's homecoming show on Nov. 17 at the El Rey Theatre was awash in grace and graciousness. The L.A. quintet whose debut album landed in July gave the capacity crowd more than an hour swoon-worthy folk-rock. And, coming off six weeks on tour, they graciously and profusely thanked the home audience for the support. Only 15 months before, in July 2011, the band had opened for Grouplove at the Hammer Museum's summer music series. On this night, each band was playing a sold-out L.A. show, Milo at the El Rey and Grouplove at the Wiltern. [...]
