On the Cool Kids' full-length debut, When Fish Ride Bicycles , the Chicago duo pulls together some impressive beats and features. The great beats are to be expected, but things really deteriorate in the rapping and lyricism departments. I know it's band to simply get hung up over the lyricism of this album, but it's really holding me back on this one. I know the Kids' earlier stuff wasn't the most lyrical material on the planet, but When Fish Ride is really an album for people who don't listen much to the lyrics. [...]

The east coast batch of shows kick off later this month concluding with two New York shows at Bowery Ballroom on April 9 and 10. Bake Sale Hailing from the likely, yet unlikely, city of Memphis, Tennessee are Bake Sale . If I were a slightly more bitter, critical soul I'd probably be able to find fault in the pop stylings of these girls (and guy). However, being the easily swooned pop-lover I am, the beautiful four minutes and sixteen seconds of "Prom Song" left me glass-eyed, sighing "Yessssssssss." Have a listen for yourself. Daily Doses: Bake Sale "Meanwhile" (2010) I love bands that can bring out both the lighter, and the darker side of "Beach Pop", and Memphis' Bake Sale does exactly that. Their other recent Mp3 release "Prom Song" was more of a west coast jaunt through the calm acceptance of a love that may or may not be there. However, on "Meanwhile", instead of picking up the chorus into a call to arms, they just let it drift down into an apathetic shrug of resignation. Loved, lost, and moved on. [...]
