The effects of last night’s Balkan Beat Box show were so… overwhelming I can only begin this review with disconnected words and sensations: Swarthiness. Beauty. Back bending/chest-to-the-air-shaki ng. Colorful scarves. Bangle earrings. Unironic facial hair. Purple clothing everywhere (shout-out to Gogol!). Gypsies. Hooplah. Hands up. Lights down. To give more of a narrative: I got to the show in time to see DJ Who Am I (who is only slightly behind the band “Boys” in unsearchable Google names) who is, first and foremost, stunning. She’s this neat little, long-haired, super-hip girl [...]

Wailing horns, booming bass, winding guitar lines, thumping drums and screaming vocals all combine to make up a Balkan Beat Box 's live show. The crowd is dancing, if not jumping, rhythm is reverberating from all angles and directions as percussionists, horn players, vocalists, and dancers all rotate around the stage. Objects, substances and people fly on, off and around the stage as the show romps and raves from set to set. There are very few live musical experiences quite like a Balkan Beat Box concert. [...]

Arizona's own McDowell Mountain Music Festival marks its 10 year anniversary in just a couple of months (March 22-24) with a stellar lineup - arguably the strongest lineup in its decade long run. I've made it very clear over the years that MMMF is hands-down my favorite music event in old AZ. I've attended every one of them since 2007, when I watched in awe as Aaron Neville and his brothers belted out "Tell It Like It Is." From its earlier years at Scottsdale's spacious Westworld complex (2004-2009) to the [...]

Chuck P From KCRW DJ Chuck P: This Mediterranean influenced group (that revolves around the trio of Tomer Yosef , Ori Kaplan & Tamir Muskat ) have a unique sound... and story. First, the music. Including elements of klezmer and hip hop, funk and dub, brass band and arabic melodies, their originality is undeniable. Consistently high energy and fun, they have evolved over the course of their four albums, but the mission [...]

Chicago - Chicago’s Metro Theater was literally shaking Saturday night with the sounds of tubas, saxophones, drums, accordions, cowbells, bongos, trumpets and hundreds of stomping feet as three gypsy punk inspired bands stormed the stage one after the other. The Balkan extravaganza started off with no-nonsense Black Bear Combo, a local Chicago five piece brass/reed band that started jammin’ on their instruments before all of their members had even taken their places. The band rolled out one punk rock/jazz/Eastern European inspired piece after another as the crowd started feeling the rhythms of the music – there was a particularly wonderfully [...]

Vetiver / photo by Jill Evans With KEXP and just about everyone else down in Austin this week , Seattle slows down just a little bit, but there's still some good music choices for those of us staying behind. On Tuesday, Balkan Beat Box are at the Showbox at the Market, and Saul Williams is at Neumo's. If you happen to be in Austin for SXSW on Friday, you could go to the amazing "SxSeattle Party" with Allen Stone, My Goodness, Pickwick, Craft Spells, The Young Evils, The Horde [...]

March roars in like a lion with this week's release by Ceremony - yeah, there are like two or three bands with that name, but this is the thrashy hard-core one, rather than the mopey shoegazy one. On their fourth album, produced by Seattle's own John Goodmanson, this California band evolves into what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "an intense and expansive blend of classic ‘70s punk and bristling ‘80s post-punk, with bands like Wire, Mission of Burma and the Sex Pistols being major touchstones on this consistently stellar set of songs ranging from explosive punk ragers [...]
Balkan Beat Box welcomed a wide array of guests onto their first three records; the music played out as a globe-hopping smorgasbord of multiculturally influenced sounds and ideas, teeming with sexual charge and a political undercurrent. As subversive as it was, they jammed it into a package that was, fundamentally, something you could shake your ass to. Their fourth record, Give , marks the first time the trio have entered the studio guest-free, and the results are much thinner and digital-sounding than their past work, heavier on the electronica facet of their sound. The political messages [...]
Tweet The Balkan Beat Box, the gypsy-cabaret-punk band have a (not so) new song out called Political Fuck. Kick ass song, inspired by what goes on in the world lately (disaster, chaotic mess, we're all gonna die), and brings some ... Continue reading
