Speed Of Dark: Finally Friday - While I don't really 'get' The Decemberists (don't call me names, that's not very neighbourly), I did enjoy reading this post. The Decemberists held a concert a few days after the US election to celebrate Obama's victory, and you can find several live tracks here, including one where the audience is asked to jog in place and sit on the floor. Gotta love some audience participation! Can You See The Sunset: It Came From The Nineties Volume 43 - This long running series celebrates (and sometimes mocks) the [...]

photo from Mindful Seeing (please visit) So what do you know this post Halloween Saturday? What new and exciting items happened to the musical landscape? With a few quick glances, I have gathered one small corner of the interwebs below for your perusal. I did include a track from the new J. Tillman - Vacilando Territory Blues on yesterday's playlist, but the album was more or less leaked this week - but pick it up next Tuesday over at the Western Vinyl shop . The [...]

BELLE & SEBASTIAN RELEASE BBC LP An unequivocable favorite of our over here at Cannibal Cheerleader through the years has been the now sadly 'on-hiatus' group Belle & Sebastian . From their indie-pop masterpiece If You're Feeling Sinister to their subversively excellent b-sides and rareties (collected on Push Barman to Open Old Wounds ) we love it all. That's why we're so excited to hear that the band is officially releasing a collection of some of their lauded BBC Sessions. Included is the rare John Peel session that [...]

NEW TREASURE MAMMAL 7'' Fresh from our mailbox to your computer screen comes the newest release from Phoenix-based rapper/experimental artist/motivational speaker Treasure Mammal , and boy it's a doozy. The EP is a split with Whitman but it's our friend T. Mammal who steals the show, especially with his excellent rendition of "Ain't No Shame in My Game". Seriously, Abe's flow is becoming a serious force to be reckoned with, his scattershot metaphors mixing seamlessly with his vocal delivery, which dances between righteously spastic and smoothly droll. [...]
It catches me in odd ways. A 50 pence piece, and my stomach bottoms out. I see your face in the rain, and the look in your eyes before you turned away. It feels like a fall, the half-second before trip and impact. The foot crumples, and then a downwards lurch. You are everywhere, and follow me: rigid, tight, dense. Balmorhea - Barefoot Pilgrims Max Richter - Written On Sky
THAO NGUYEN GETS DOWN IN AUSTIN Swinging in for a free in-store performance at End of an Ear Records a little over an hour later than expected, Thao Nguyen and her backing backing band the Get Down Stay Down nonetheless managed to tear through a set of bluesy indie rock that kept the audience rapt with attention throughout short set. With intricate guitar-picking skills that nonetheless seems to flow from her fingertips like raindrops, and a voice that recalls a mix between a Southern songstress croon and a [...]

Alright, it's clear that I'm a little bit too busy to approximate my usual pattern of posting. There are two options. I can choose to simply ignore the blog for the next 6 weeks while I'm working, traveling across the country, etc. Or I can alter the style of posting to make it easier to update. For now, I'm choosing the latter option though I reserve the right to simply disappear for a while if things get too busy for even that. That means I'm going to stop feeling guilty for failing to post [...]
(No Ratings Yet) Loading ...
Balmorhea began as a collaboration between Michel Muller and Rob Lowe, combining to create delicate minimalist compositions between piano and guitar on their eponymous debut. Since then, the group has expanded to add strings, and more recently, drum and bass, filling out their powerful instrumental swells with more rock direction. This year's Rivers Arms is already among the best local releases of '08, a beautiful rich meditation that merges field recordings and striking arrangements in impressionistic movements. The group has offered up a gorgeous new, untitled track below for download as well. You can see the group perform [...]

Austin Texas duo-turned-quartet Balmorhea makes melancholic acoustic music, complicating roots Midwest Americana with cinematic ambience. It took me a few tries to get into their music since I'm not preloaded with the rural midwest culture, in fact I've lived %99 of my life within the hubbub of a metropolis of over 10 million. Campfires, none. Summercamps, nope. Hell I guess I've never even seen a lake. Yet Balmorhea's music had this universal quality that transcends cultures, which made me persist in trying to get into their music, which is something I rarely do if [...]

1. Sigur Ros - Gobbledigook - Yes yes yes yes yes yes. Tribal poundings + circling acoustic guitars + cooing and artfully-panned vocals = anticipation for June 23rd. [from Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust (out 6.23)| info ] 2. Balmorhea - San Solomon - I keep trying to listen to this song and not be moved like a leaf on the water. I keep trying to hold my eyes open for its entirety. Alas, I cannot. [from Rivers Arms | buy ] [...]
