This is Part 1 in a 27 part series called Unfulfilled Obligations. If there are any readers out there who care, I apologize that I completely fell off after week one of our June shows piece . I am a busy man, and I still haven't really learned how to do a damned thing on this website. The few times I have posted, Nate had to put it up for me. He has compassion for his little helmeted friend. He will show me the light, and I will try to become more of a contributor to this little blog [...]

It's the beginning of a killer week of live music here in Austin, and the town is going to start it off with a great set from various noise-makers. Black Moth Super Rainbow headline this show at Mohawk, closing with their electronic noise fusion. Local greats Balmorhea open this show, and they're sure to be the quieter set of the evening. Don't forget the middle band, School of Seven Bells , will bring their precious space-pop amidst the two acts, rounding out an [...]

I recently stumbled across a great music-related social media site entitled theSIXTYONE , a great site where users promote the music they enjoy and discover music enjoyed by others. For the time being, the majority of the music is independently released, so thesixtyone serves as another vehicle for exposing these artists. One such artist I fell in love with, Balmorhea , are not necesarilly new, but new to me. Their latest album All is Wild, All is Silent , as well as the previous, Rivers Arms , are incredibly soothing musical adventures. [...]

One of our newest and favorite local discoveries of the last year, Balmorhea , are playing another sure to be great show at Stubbs on Friday night. Pompeii and Alex Dupree and The Trapdoor band will take the stage as well to open things up. Tickets for this show are $10 from Front Gate and doors open at 9:30. Friday night is jammed packed full of goodness, so you've got some big decisions to make. Download: Balmorhea - Harm & Boon [MP3]

I simply can't get enough of listening to the experimental wonders of Balmorhea . My job as a web developer sometimes requires me to tune the outside world and focus on the piece of code I am writing. The classical acoustic styles of Balmorhea can put anyone in the zone, however some side effects may include: lower heart rate and sleepiness; as most of their songs are accompanied by a mellow tempo. They are very close to be considered classical music yet their style is extremely modern with recognizable rock influences. Formed in 2006, Rob Lowe [...]

One of the great things about living in this great city of Austin, is the endless possibilities of new music discovery. On any given day, you can find something great that's been right under your nose for months. I recently stumbled upon this really cool local label, home to quite a few really great artists, Western Vinyl . Dirty Projectors, J Tillman, Here We Go Magic, and locals Balmorhea are just a few to mention, that call Western Vinyl home. This song is my introduction to Balmorhea, and quite a fine one indeed. [...]

A new collection of Secret Garden performances will resume tomorrow, April 29th. Here's a schedule of what's in store. If you're unfamiliar with this ever-changing magical garden, it is a mini-documentary series in which I film bands performing a few songs outside the context of a regular show. Along with the schedule you'll also find some "candid band photos" that, as a tradition of my own, I take after each shoot. If you're a blogger who'd like to write a preview for any of these episodes before they release, just email me at [...]

This week's New Music Tuesday is going to feature several bands that are new to me this year and have caught my attention for their brilliance. If you haven't heard of them yet, take a sample and enjoy... Kestrels A kestrel is a type of bird, a member of the falcon genus. Unfortunately, that Wikipedia reference has little to do with the Canadian band whose debut single has been lodged in my Top 10 of the week for a couple months [...]

like any well-told story, balmorhea 's "harm and boon" begins with an introduction that sets the scene for the events that would unfold. in this case, it's a quiet depiction, almost tentative but sufficiently intricate for the listener to soak in the ambience and blend into the background. the event itself, the action, or the plot as it were, breaks the monotony with a rather rude awakening and a mixed bag of emotions that eventually spirals into storm of the quietest, tensest proportions. and like all stories we've come to love, this one sure resolves itself perfectly with the [...]

NEW MARS VOLTA ALBUM NEWS AND COVER ART Check that bad boy out! Word on the street is (very early, blogosphere speculative word that is) that this wonderful monstrosity is indeed the face of Octahedron , the newest release from Texas' own The Mars Volta , one of our favorite bands of all time. Lots of speculation and rumor surrounding this release so let's lay down a few things we do know, starting with the tracklist: "Since We've Been Wrong" "Teflon" "Halo [...]

Sunday, April 19, 2009 I hope everyone enjoyed Record Store Day, I picked up a few albums I'd been meaning to buy, as well as the new Wilco live DVD, Ashes of American Flags. It's definitely got some good concert footage and short interviews, though I'm still a fan of the pared-down shows of the YHF era, where Jeff was still learning how to solo properly and all the A Ghost Is Born tracks were still being written. But let's get down to business. Two great new local albums that [...]

"Harm and Boon" by Balmorhea which clocks in at 8:05. Rather than invent our own narrative around this week's 8+, Balmorhea's "Harm and Boon", we went directly to the source to find out the inspiration and process behind crafting such an enchanting and cinematic composition. The centerpiece of the band's latest album All is Wild, All is Silent (now available on Western Vinyl ), "Harm and Boon" elicits a vibrant spectrum of emotion without reliance on so much as a single word. Luckily, we now have the band's own words [...]

A crazy amount of wonderful new albums are releasing today. I've had copies of most of them for a while, but today is the street legal date, so rush out and buy some records if the economy hasn't hit you too hard. Today's great musicians need the money as much as GM, and the independent labels that they toil for are much better run. Balmorhea: All Is Wild, All Is Silent [Western Vinyl] Casiotone for the Painfully Alone: [...]
Dear lord, what a release week. In sheer size, if nothing else. I had to do a lot to pare this down to 67. Obviously the odds are good that there are going to be a few good gems in here. Worth highlighting are Jimmy Eat World 's release of Clarity Live , Arcade Fire 's Miroir Noir live DVD, which is one of the better live videos I've seen, and the debut album from Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek (which you'll see a review for soon). [...]
I Balmorhea saranno in Italia a fine aprile per due imperdibili date. Il nostro consiglio è talmente scontato che non occorre aggiungere altro. Nell'attesa la versione live di "Coahuila" realizzata al recente SXSW. Balmorhea in tour: 30 APR | Carpi - IT | Mattatoio Club 01 MAG | Rimini - IT | Dimora Landscape # 2 [...]
