![[Introducing] – Balún](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3197736_lg.jpg)
For some time now, I've been on the search for new and interesting indie bands from Latin America. Well, I can stop searching because I've just found my new favorite band for the moment. Balún is a, not so new, band out of San José, Puerto Rico, who came together over their love of "simple melodies, 16mm films, cartoon doodles, classical and folk instruments, and experimental pop music," – their words, not mine. I say "not so new" since they have been around since 2002, and regrettably, I've just now stumbled upon them. This dream pop band moved [...]

40. Carmen Sandiego - Joven Edad Independiente, "Superado" ♫♫♫ Named after everyone's favorite elusive educational criminal mastermind, Uruguay-based band Carmen Sandiego makes self-aware, tongue-in-cheek music with a fantastic dry humor a la Leslie Nielsen (RIP) in The Naked Gun series. Think very matter-of-fact songs about kisses that taste like cheese and induce vomit. There's actually one on this album. Musically, Joven Edad , is, for the most part, pretty simple and straightforward rock and roll. But in terms of tone and content matter, the [...]
After taking a brief hiatus, the Puerto Rican band Balún has reunited once again and this time they're living in Brooklyn (Greenpoint to be exact). I first discovered the band when flipping through the 99 cent bin at a record shop in Chicago and I have to say that it was the best 99 cent purchase I ever made in my life. If you like Sigur Ros and the Freelance Whales, then you'll love this band

Memoria Textil, Balún Sgulp! Records, Puerto Rico Rating: 80 (****) By Carlos Reyes Aural hues, infectious vocals and sophisticated 8bits; Puerto Rico's Balún crafted one hell of a good mini-album, one that blossoms as it gets unfold. The [...]

Sometimes day dreaming and skipping out on reality for a little while is a good idea, so why not have a good soundtrack for your trip. Puerto Rico's Balún can help you along the way with their soft, ambient, acoustic-electronic and self-proclaimed "dream-pop" as they get ready to release their 2nd full-length album which has yet to be titled [officially, anyway]. The first single "Camila" from the upcoming album kicks off with soothing, bumping electronic ambience which seems uncontrollable and hard to capture, kinda like one of those Enya albums. It's soon grabbed by a solid [...]

Puerto Rico's sweetest pop act Balún has liberated a new wonderful song titled "Camila" for free download, and I must say, it's among their best. Balún is one of those bands we've learned to admire and respect by chunks, mostly through their participation in compilations that have leaded us to their wonderfully pleasing albums. They will be releasing an EP very soon and have announced their second LP for 2010. "Camila" is part of that LP and a great leading song; a superb tale of ghostly approach & loss (more accurately imaginary friend), is it creepy if I tell you [...]

A friend of mine that I work with gave me a couple bands to listen to; Balún and Horse Feathers. [...]

The thing about netlabels is that they don't find you. You have to find them yourself. So once I settled down with a decent label I can trust, the next sensible thing would be checking out the links section and have a look at the other possibly like-minded labels. That's exactly how I discovered this lovely compilation, courtesy of German netlabel Aerotone . The premise is as self-explanatory as its title: to "combine acoustic music with electronic bits and pieces". And the contributed tracks lived up well to the label's proclaimed statement: 'we love melancholic music'. It's a subtle, [...]

The show that I had been awaiting, pretty much upon seeing the news blurb on Pitchfork , didn't merely meet my expectations; they blew them away. I can definitely say that I've never been to a show that was so consistently excellent and diverse. Of course, I've been loving Mahogany ever since I saw the video for " Supervitesse ", but I approached the rest of the show with mere curiosity. I've said before that being familiar with a band's material isn't essential towards enjoying them live, and this was definitely the case here. [...]
