Minneapolis musician and writer Nate Gangelhoff has an impressive CV. He's played in Off With Their Heads, Rivethead, and Banner Pilot, as well as a band that's recently put out their third full-length, The Gateway District . The quartet's remarkably well-known for a band that rarely plays outside of the Twin Cities area, but their pedigree is enough to interest anyone familiar with the current punk scene, with members of the Soviettes, Salteens, and Dear Landlord (to say nothing of Gangelhoff's laundry list of bands). Gangelhoff was kind enough to take time out of his [...]

In the first of many videos from this year's Fest 11 in Gainesville, FL we're pleased to bring you two songs from Banner Pilot's performance at 8 Seconds. Included are the songs "Central Standard" from 2009's Collapser and "Division Street" from last year's Heart Beats Pacific . Click Read [...]

Man, sometimes midwestern punk just hits the right spot. With Minneapolis dudes Banner Pilot's latest (ok, it was released last year... I was a bit slow on the write up... deal with it) Heart Beats Pacific the band delivers some of the catchiest tunes punk has to offer. Heart Beats Pacific is the third release from Banner Pilot, and it doesn't sway far from their original formula. On account I'm obsessed with their first full length of Resignation Day , I am more than OK with that move. Playing catchy, incredibly melodic [...]

Ever since Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice I've been anticipating some new music from Atlanta, Georgia's Campaign. With their fourth EP (because fuck full lengths is the philosophy of these guys) The Black Album, (what up Jaaaaay-Z) Campaign returns to their gruffy and gritty punk rock sound. The 5 song album kicks off with Breaking Bones, which is a much more straightforward punk rock song than any of the more melodic songs of theirs in the past. Campaign also shows a new darkness to their music with Slums, a song that dives into dissonant melodies and features an [...]

Minneapolis, MN-based Banner Pilot have begun recording demos for what will eventually become their next album. Nate Gangelhoff posted this on their Facebook : Demo-ing new songs lately, and all of the names for them have been inspired by things that are strewn about our practice space. We have an Alkaline Trio sounding tune called "Pushpin" (from the little pins on our bulletin board thingie), a poppier tune called "Aloe" (from a bottle of hand sanitizer) and a Jawbreaker-y tune called [...]
Let me tell you about the first time I saw The Holy Mess a few years back. They opened up for a band I was there to see (I don't remember who), and these Philly punks talked waaay too goddamn much. However, sort of like Dillinger Four, their banter was hilarious. The very few songs they did play got me interested in checking out their recorded stuff. The band sort of exploded over the past two years and got the attention of Red Scare, to which they pretty much released two of the bands EPs ( Dismount and [...]

Ah the good ole fashioned split: a staple in punk rock. I'm usually mixed on splits, because it may be one band I love paired with another I'm not so keen on, so I wind up just listening to one side. Once in a while though, I'll get a split from two bands I have no idea who they are, and it completely blows me away on first listen. The "Prevenge | Dig It Up Split" falls into this
Banner Pilot constantly returns to the same markers, in the same way, so that all of a sudden we can feel the Midwest winter tightening around us like a coil. The title of Banner Pilot's new record, Heart Beats Pacific, might imply escape, but damned if these Midwest punks don't owe a lot to their hometown atmosphere on their new record. These guys are a throwback to the early- to mid-'90s pop-punk -- the kind of sound their label, Fat Wreck, helped cultivate -- where unabashed layers of power chords and basic yet slicing riffs cut through every song, [...]

It didn't take long for Banner Pilot to disrupt the groundswell within the punk community from the likes of acts like the Gaslight Anthem and Off With Their Heads. Of course, if you were following the latter, then you were most definitely affixed to Banner Pilot. When the Minneapolis quartet released it's full length, Collapser , in 2008, it drew attention from critics and fans alike. Perhaps due to pedigree (ex-everything) or association ("Minneapolis," incidentally, is the punk code word for acceptance), Banner Pilot rose quickly and relentlessly. And then, nothing. As quickly [...]

Tweet It's Saturday night, so, as is my custom, I'm drinking whisky, watching Match of the Day and surfing music blogs. Actually that last bit is horribly false, I was surfing through the blogosphere but quickly got bored (please people, ... Continue reading

Snowfall, the Midwest and disappointment, these are the themes of Banner Pilot 's third LP, " Heart Beats Pacific " (Fat Wreck Chords), a gruff and melodic pop-punk romp across the lonely landscapes of a Minneapolis winter with a half-empty bottle of whiskey in hand. As with their last outing, 2009's "Collapser," there are few surprises to be found. The album's 11 songs synthesize the band's influences nicely, with Jawbreaker (we dare you to find a review of this band that doesn't mention them), the Alkaline Trio and Lawrence Arms coming through loudest, and singer-guitarist Nick Johnson's sandpaper vocals [...]

In mid-February I downloaded a 700+ song torrent which took about 12 hours to download. Throughout the process I kept contemplating whether to continue to downloading or just give up. Luckily I downloaded the whole thing and discovered hundreds of ar

On their reissued debut, the band sounds hungry to make a name for itself, and that intensity comes across well. After garnering recognition with their move to Fat Wreck Chords and their solid 2009 album Collapser, Banner Pilot is using its newfound clout to remaster and reissue its debut full length. Since it was originally recorded on a shoestring budget, the remastering does wonders for the sound here, making a clear pop-punk record out of what was once a murky document. The songs on the album show real promise for an up-and-coming Midwest punk band....
If you've read this blog for any length of time at all, you know we fucking love our pals from Minneapolis, MN in Banner Pilot . Nick and Nate from the band took some time out between writing songs for a forthcoming album to answer a few of my silly questions. Fest 9 starts tomorrow so you'd better get your shit together and go see them if you can... So you guys are working on a new album, right? Tell me about it. (Nick) Yep! Nate’s written a ton [...]
The title of Banner Pilot's latest Fat Wreck re-issue "Resignation Day" is something I wish I can declare. But alas, while I can't afford to quit my job, at least I'll have something sweet to jam out to while I work.First off, I usually feel pretty negatively towards remastered/re-issues. Sure, let me spend my hard earned money on songs that I already own. However, for Banner Pilot's "
