carolyn pennypacker riggs Barbara Lynn came out of Beaumont, Texas, with her left-handed guitar and a song about an ex called "You'll Lose A Good Thing" that pushed Ray Charles out of the #1 spot on the R&B chart. She's a soul legend for about six reasons at once and she'll be performing with Wild's Gizzelle and more this Friday and Saturday . Clifton Weaver (of Funky Sole and Aquarium Drunkard's awesome Clifton's Corner ) interviewed her with some help from Nick Waterhouse . [...]
While I'm not one th at gets into arguments or discussions about certain labels having superiority over one or another, the mere mention of the sides that Barbara Lynn recorded for Tribe Records makes me weak in the knees and crawling to the turntable on all fours. Tribe was an imprint started by Louisiana producer Huey P Meaux that found its greatest success with excellent releases from The Sir Douglas Quintet, and less success but equally excellent records from Jean Knight and today's lady fair, the inimitable Barbara Lynn. Huey spent time in jail [...]
Excuse me if I exercise a little Texas pride here - we have Barbara Lynn and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, both from the Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange (Golden Triangle) area of the state. They're appearing on a 1966 clip from the TV show "The Beat."
Unlike previous months most of my random downloads this month were older songs (and country, too). But there were a few 2011 tracks that snuck into my craw—My Morning Jacket's newest, which has me excited for their album coming out in a few weeks, and Matthew Cooper's "Expectation," a lovely ambient track. This mix is thus a little strange but is nevertheless meant to be listened to in order. Enjoy. Barbara Lynn: You Can't Buy My Love (via the Adios Lounge ) Merle Haggard: [...]

Huey P. Meaux Huey P. Meaux, the legendary and controversial Southeast Texas music producer who discovered the Sir Douglas Quintet, Freddy Fender, "Jivin' Gene" Bourgeois and Barbara Lynn, died Saturday at the age of 82. Meaux had been in federal prison since 1996, when a police raid of his Sugar Hill studios in Houston uncovered evidence that Meaux participated in child pornography, sex with underage females and drug trafficking. He skipped bail and ran to Mexico, but he finally gave up and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Meaux was released in 2007 [...]

Huey Meaux loved to say that he came up with the idea for the Sir Douglas Quintet while holed up in a San Antonio motel armed with nothing but Beatles records, Thunderbird wine , and underage Mexican hookers. His drunkpiphany was that The Beatles were basically playing a variation on the Cajun two-step, with a similar accent on the beat. Meaux called Doug Sahm , then 22 and still a relative unknown, cajoling him, "Bring your guitar and come over, Doug. I'm drunk, but I've got that beat. And that's how [...]

By the age of five we're trained to not to poke, not to push the envelope because we discover that if we do that we might get punished, we might get pushed back and so very few people [...] are ready to stand up for an idea that may not match the status quo. Get on your dancing shoes... or take them off for that matter. After a night of almost breakless boogie and a smidge of yeye last Friday at 1000fryd in Aalborg, Denmark, I feel inspired to spread the word. Dancing to music you haven't ever heard before is strangely refreshing. So is dancing when you're the only one on the dancefloor at 10 pm... when three-four hours later there's just no more space from couples shakin' it, and some twat spills beer on the dancefloor so there's a largish square of space gone to waste. [...]

I just found out about the Brooklyn Soul Festival this last week and am seriously considering making a pilgrimage to NYC to check it out. It's taking place on August 28th and 29th and features a line-up of some sweet soulful musicians, both young and old, including Otis Clay, Barbara Lynn, Maxine Brown, Roscoe Robinson, Hermon Hitson, Eli "Paperboy" Reed and the True Loves, and the Sweet Divines . The bill is split between the two nights, with DJs spinning 45's after the live musicians pack it up to keep the [...]

On August 28 and 29, Eli "Paerboy" Reed along with Dig Deeper will present The Brooklyn Soul Festival at the Bell House. The event will host names such as Barbara Lynn, Roscoe Robinson, Hermon Hitson, Otis Clay, and Maxine Brown. Bigger news for Reed, however, is that he has just been signed to Capitol Records with aims for a new release in Spring 2010.

by Scott Schinder In its 23-year existence, the Austin, Texas-based South by Southwest music festival/industry gathering has always mirrored the mood of both the mainstream music biz and the alt-rock underground. So it wasn't surprising that the vibe at that this year's SXSW carried an undercurrent of unease over the perilous state of the recorded-music business, even as a horde of young and/or unsigned acts were in town attempting to launch their careers by bypassing traditional business models. While the seismic shifts in the music biz are undeniable, music continues to play as essential a [...]

Barbara Lynn I'm a Good Woman MP3 File This one's in pretty rough shape, but the excellence still shines through. Released in '66 on Huey Meaux's Tribe label.

I Crave The Very Things That Will Be My Ruin (01), 2007, Digital Art as Giclee Print, 153x203. I really like how this piece turned out. The explosively bright pinks with the more subdued olive-tinged grays really pop. Originally, I planned on putting a drawing (made in a ridiculous number of layers for you design/tech heads) of model Rusty Joiner in the piece, and while he is quite the tall cool drink of water, I'm thinking it better that I leave the beefcake out of it. Still. Boys [...]
Man! I'd never heard of Barbara Lynn until catching a little bit of an American Routes episode that Townsmen Meanstom and BigSteve discussed a couple of weeks ago. BigSteve sent me a collection of her work, and rather than pretend I know anything about the artist in the week I've been digging her stuff, how about if I simply post a few tracks for you to savor? "Sure Is Worth It" "Why Can't [...]
