Bill Wells is a musician I really appreciate. This self taught musician, who deals with electronic music and avantgard was and still is crucial for the sound of Scottish alternative, as he worked with bands like Belle&Sebastien , Arab Strap and more. He also recorded a wonderful album with the Swedish minimal/vintage electronic duo Tape (Released this year with Immune Records - fantastic album). Annie Whitehead is one of the leading feminine figures in the jazz world today. She already have [...]

Think About Life "Cyanide" "Cyanide" is about panic and confusion, but it somehow feels loose and calm despite its anxiety and tension. Maybe it's like being in the eye of the storm, or finding some peace amid chaos. Listening to the track, it seems as though it could just explode at any moment or build to some catharsis, but instead, the track just sorta stops, letting the mood run its course without a hint of what could happen next. Visit the Think About Life website. [...]
Barbara Morgenstern is back with another platter full of sublime indie pop; it's electropop-infused but so clearly organic-sounding that it's hard to pin such a simple label on her sound. Obviously I can't understand the lyrics, but the tone at...
Yet another slow release week. Damn the Christmas season. The only release I'm actually excited about is Burial's . Last year's Untrue was a 2007 favorite. And Denison Witmer could be good. Really, though... what else is going to be worth listening to this week? I don't even know. An album from Kevin Costner ? That could be interesting. Who wants to take bets on how many songs I get through before I have to shut that one off? :: Adversary [...]

[ Monika Enterprise ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy mp3s ) Barbara Morgenstern has always been an elusive artist. She's flirted with the world of techno in tantalizing ways - working with producers as varied as Thomas Fehlmann, DNTEL and, on this set of remixes, Hefty's Telefon Tel Aviv, Kompakt standouts The Rice Twins and French DJ Chloe - without ever fully giving into it, choosing instead to infuse electronic elements into her productions while maintaining pop structures and instrumentation. In 2002, she produced a high profile remix of DNTEL and [...]

Here's some beautiful netlabel ambient, from the ever reliable Monotonik imprint. The EP is called Show Us Your Weak Side, which naturally you can snag for totally free and such. Muxu - Hishiko Yep, there are some good tunes on...
Last night I saw the latest re-cut of the film Blade Runner, dark and distopian and spooky as ever. This song, by german singer Barbara Barbara Morgenstern, is a perfect fit for the mood of that film. Alternating her singing between German and English, Morgenstern's character could easily be the film's Sean Young, looking for some kind of answer from her creator. She sings over the perfect future sound, a beepy noise that moves on a maglev of rhthym. It's music for fast driving on dark nights into the heart of an unknown city. Presumably in [...]

"Take me to the operator." Barbara Morgenstern ~ The Operator (Piano version) from Operator CD single by Barbara Morgenstern

If compiling my thirty favorite singles wasn't hard enough, culling a list of my thirty favorite songs proved near impossible. Every entry that was edged off the countdown was given a more drawn-out goodbye than an airport sendoff. With so many standouts in a crowded field, I had to make some very, very tough calls. But with that sonic surgery accomplished, I can happily say that these songs are the ones that have generously defined my year, soundtracked it and vastly improved it. Here are my picks: 30) [...]

This will be my first Christmas away from home - which, strangely enough, makes me feel a lot more at home in Berlin. So I figured it was time to pay attention to some Berlin musicians. But since I am going back to rainy old Ireland for New Year's I'm giving a bit of space to that as well. I can never decide on anything. Jape is from Dublin. He makes music that sounds like a mass of funky digital elephants with bass guitars instead of trunks and boom-boxes [...]

Berlin, Germany What a German delight! Barbara Morgenstern makes poetic electro-pop and The Grass Is Always Greener is her fifth solo record. She's playing several dates right now, but you won't get to see her unless you're lucky enough to be in Europe this month. "The Operator" Barbara Morgenstern on MySpace
Delicious German electropop today from Barbara Morgenstern. Her new album is called The Grass Is Always Greener, and it feels a little bit more sprightly than the last record of hers I picked up, Nichts Muss, which became a moody...

image by Sherlock77 Here's the final installment of the top 2006 list with some more good songs. Barbara Morgenstern's 2006 effort The Grass is Always Greener is an allround electronic pop/downtempo album it's not groundbreaking but it's her 3rd album in a row with the same quality that you'd expect and the operator is a jolly good song to sing-along. Another song I instantly fell in love is Humans from Islands' Return to the Sea. Just listen to the lyrics which are about the future of us humans, and the part that goes "should we [...]
