Or "25 Nooks of Fun I'd Like People to Tickle Me In." Both titles, as well as the general concept, were suggested to me by my friend Adriaan, who was interested in reading the bright side of my recent post "I Hate When People Say That!: 25 Things I Hope I Never Hear Again." I like to think of myself as a fairly positive person, but considering how much more difficult this list was to compile, maybe I'm not so much of one. 1. "Yes" At the end of my professional bio, which [...]

For our first Fantastic Foursome in more than a month we're featuring a memorable song from a mostly forgettable movie, The Sandpiper , a 1965 tearjerker that starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor - one of eleven they made together. But even if the movie wasn't one for the ages, "The Shadow Of Your Smile" not only won an Oscar but also picked up a Grammy as Song of the Year. Written by Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster, it soon became a hit record for Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, and several others. It also became a [...]
I'll never forgot the time I met Phil Ramone. It was on a Saturday night in 2001 at an after-party for Sarah Brightman following her concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Before my publicist friend introduced us, I never would have been able to pick Ramone out in a crowd, but I'd been familiar with his name since 1983 when I'd peruse Billboard's Hot 100 every week and see it listed as the producer of hit single after hit single from Billy Joel's An Innocent Man album. [...]
Mika burst on to the scene a few years ago with a sugary pop masterpiece, Life in Cartoon Motion, and his joyful and colorful live shows, chock full of balloons, confetti, streamers and a giant pop band behind him. Now, he's on tour supporting his newest album, The Origin of Love, and he's taking a markedly different approach. [...] The post Show Review: An Intimate Evening with Mika at Great American Music Hall, 3/25/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .
There must be something in the air this week, because on the same morning that Glee 's flaccid attempt at Radiohead's "Creep" did the rounds on various music blogs, World of Wonder reposted Barbra Streisand's bewildering cover of David Bowie's "Life on Mars." This double dose of ghastliness got us thinking about the singular hubris of so many covers that purport to "improve" a song by removing exactly what made it special in the first place. The history of music is littered with these boring renditions of great songs, [...]

The BARBRA STREISAND is heading to London town come June 1st. Tickets on sale this Friday. Woohoo ! Etc ! Bet she won't be amazing but still. Woohoo ! Etc !

I've never been given to public or private displays of insane jealousy. I've always been more the type to observe silently and simmer on the inside. "Don't Mess with My Man" (to quote the title of the No. 8 hit from 2002 by Nivea and Brian and Brandon Casey from Jagged Edge)? I'd so never go there . Well, except for that one time. It was years ago in New York City, early one Saturday morning when I was at the after-hours East Village club Save the Robots with my then-boyfriend. There was another guy getting [...]

Yesterday, when I watched the 85th annual Academy Awards in the middle of Monday afternoon Australia time, I purposely did so in a bubble. There was no checking out Facebook status updates to see what everyone was saying. When I blogged my impressions afterwards, I didn't want to be corrupted by any outside influence other than my friend Lori's. Hours later, when I finally started reading through the impressions of my Facebook friends, a few things jumped out at me: 1) I wasn't the only person who was disappointed by the live performances of Adele and Barbra [...]

Who wore the best weave at the Oscars last night ? The BARBRA STREISAND ? The ADELE ? The SHIRLEY BASSEY ? Hard to say. Easy to spot the plastic sadness however.

1. Seth MacFarlane was looking so nervous and uncomfortable during his opening monologue until William Shatner arrived in time to (sort of) save the clunky routine. One wonders why nobody considered hiring Captain Kirk as host. Or why Shatner didn't stop MacFarlane from doing that terrible song about A-list actress boobs. I loved the bit with Sally Field, though -- she looks 10 years younger -- and sock puppets never fail to amuse me, especially when one of them is supposed to be Denzel Washington, drunk and coked-up in the cockpit at the Flight wheel. [...]

For several Oscar seasons and counting, there have been loud complaints from bloggers and pundits about how the Academy Awards have become way too predictable, and for the most part, I'm going to have to side with the gripes. Going into the February 24 ceremony, Oscar's shock value might be at an all-time low. Although there have been a few instances of suspense among recent races (last year's Best Actress contest, for example, was The Help 's Viola Davis vs. The Iron Lady 's Meryl Streep, with My Week with Marilyn 's Michelle [...]

There there, London. I still love you. If only I could say the same for everybody else. London has always had its share of detractors -- that's what it gets for being constantly damp and grey -- but lately, it seems, nobody is on its side. I'm always meeting expats from England who fled the capital and the cities around it seeking greener pastures and sunnier skies elsewhere. When I lived in Buenos Aires, I met more expats from London than any other city. Two months ago when I told the sister of a [...]

In the retro musical realm of late-'80s-to-mid-'90s female-sung R&B, Regina Belle sat high atop a perch looking down at new-jack city. Beside her were the best of the rest: Angela Winbush, Stephanie Mills, Miki Howard and Alyson Williams. Sisters with serious voices. At her personal best, Belle was like a true black Barbra Streisand with a touch of Billie Holiday's soulful slur, able to sing up to a dozen or more pitch-perfect notes in one breath without ever stopping to catch it. She was the very definition of smooth, her fluid vocal style gracefully merging words into [...]

I had minimal interest in seeing the new Rogen and Streisand flick, The Guilt Trip . This was until I went home to visit the fam for the holidays and was thinking of something to do. The trailer came on TV and I thought, what the heck, this looks like something I should take my mom to see, and so I did. The Guilt Trip is most certainly a movie to take your mom to see as it is a heart-felt comedy. It's not quite a rom-com, that would be a little strange and even stranger to take your mom [...]
