Dear Sir, While I appreciate your desire to appear formal, I'm pretty sure you can't use the word "appointment" to describe the act of waiting an hour for you outside Ralph's seated next to a guy who smells like he's been marinating in his own urine for weeks. Sincerely, Evan I don't know what you [...]

• So, listening to Bardo Pond cover "Maggot Brain," the only thing that I'm disappointed by is how they didn't ask Isobel to deliver the Eddie Hazel introduction like the original. That would have been really cool. Alas, they've got her playing flute, which is surprisingly effective. I imagine at some point I'll make it [...]

S ome great news from the Bardo Pond camp yesterday, specialy for those of you who collect vinyl. I thought this was the good news " The band aim to release a new record in the latter stages of 2013 ". It’s been three years since Philadelphia’s psych surgeons Bardo Pond gave us something new – not that we need anything new necessarily, because their back catalogue is pretty exemplary. I’ve always thought the five-piece has been one of the most underrated bands of its ilk in the past decade. Fire Records [...]

By Thomas Bolton 21 March, 2013 In the week My Bloody Valentine resurfaced on stage, waving or drowning in a rip tide of feedback, you might conclude there is something in the air. With a fortuitous timing Bardo Pond have also chosen to re-release their last-but-one album, Ticket Crystals . First out in 2006, it bears certain resemblances to the MBV sound, but influences are a starting point rather than a destination for Bardo Pond. The Philadelphia five-some have been around since the [...]
For all that the internet provides an endless wealth of music, it's easy to get stuck in the same listening habits after a while. Sometimes it takes someone to come along with a bunch of new tunes to shake you out of such habits, and since we're as guilty of getting stuck in a listening rut as anyone else, we've been amusing ourselves this week at Flavorpill central by delving into our record collections and sharing some of our favorite obscure, under-appreciated albums — and we thought we'd share the results with our readers, too! From the very old to [...]

Once again the in-box overfloweth with sounds to share (especially once we'd consigned all the crappy remixes and dancefloor bangers to the trash folder) - so delve in to this lucky thirteen smorgasbord of audio delights. Inspired by the beautiful snowy winters and post-industrial landscape of Pittsburgh, PA, Arlo Aldo have created a new twist on American alt-folk, with mellow tempos and lilting harmonies layered on top of finger picked guitar and cathedral-like organ. New album Zelie will be released on the 5th February - recommended for fans of Low, Dirty Three, Wilco, [...]

Yeah, there is a big sold-out show coming to town at Union Transfer tonight with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, especially since they just announced yesterday that their first album in a decade, ALLELUJAH! DON'T BEND! ASCEND! , will be officially released on October 16, but is already available on tour. While you're rushing to grab your copy, make sure to get there early to catch the set of Philly's favorite experimental drone-y psych rockers Bardo Pond . The hometown staple has been helping to keep things weird on our music scene for over 20 years now so "ya [...]
If you have a ticket for the sold-out Godspeed You! Black Emperor show at Union Transfer tonight, make it a point to get there for the opening band. Two decades ago, Philadelphia brothers Michael and John Gibbons embarked on the underground “Psychadelphia” movement, gleaning influences from classic psych-rock staples like Pink Floyd and experimental indie ... Hello, star travelers. It's good to see you again. I'm ever so happy that none of you died this weekend. It would be a real pity, especially considering I only know four or five of your names. I should make a more concerted effort to meet the rest of you. The unwashed masses. The thousands [...]

Are you the type who understands the word "edible" as a noun more so than an adjective? If so, you might be interested in what's going down tonight at The Level Room, as psych-rock vets Bardo Pond bring their space-rock drones to Market St. Formed in 1991, the sextet are led by the vocal shadings of Isobel Sollenberger and the guitar haze of the brothers Gibbons, making music comparable to what My Bloody Valentine might sound like after a week of smoking with Boris. Bardo Pond keep no secrets about their influences; many of their albums are named [...]
We didn't have a Pit Romney column up last week, a critical error since HOLY CRAPS SO MUCH HAPPENED! So without further ado, here's your latest round-up of the goings on in the wonderful world of hardcore festivals! The bilingual bunch behind Quebec's sixth Heart Fest recently revealed the full lineup for this three-day event, [...]
An epic two track 40 minute split from two of the Modern Psychedelic Underground's greats, the legendary Bardo Pond spoon out the molasses with the track Fallen on side A, that has an expansive droned psych thrum, helmed by some driving rhythms, the power, the loud..and then as you are almost pummelled into nothingness, Isobel's flute comes through.and then furthur on until she begins to sing.
What can we say about Hawkwind? Certinaly nothing describes their prime-era better than Julian Copes words - "They were a collection of disreputable star rats fuelled by a battery of hallucinogenic influences and united only by an incorrigible sense of psi-powered, pre-1976 cosmic punk rock attitude broken off and gobbled as though it was their sole means of sustenance while playing riffs into
The New Zealand fuzz-poppers kicked off 2011 with the release of their debut full-length album, Kudos , on Fire Records, and a brief American tour with psych-rock label mates Bardo Pond. And now, to round out the year, they've dropped a video to accompany the single, "Crazy Rulers of the World." The video debuted on Pitchfork a few weeks back and we've got the video for you here in case you missed it. We created this official video from footage shot during their D.C. show, so you've got a little bit of AON [...]

[iphone photo by acidjack] Bardo Pond belongs to a select group of contemporary bands that are beyond categorization. Arguably their nearest contemporaries are Godspeed , but even that is an imperfect comparison. Bardo performs sweeping guitar based soundscapes, but within a song structure. At Death By Audio last weekend, the band performed a representative hour-long set to a modest but enthusiastic crowd. Along with 285 Kent, DBA has become a primary Brooklyn DIY venue with an upgraded sound system and excellent staff. The atmosphere was perfect for the Bardo show, as the [...]
