I trust you're all recovering/resting/relaxing today. Whether you welcomed 2012 with a quiet night at home alongside family and friends, or joined some raucous, drunken celebration at a house/club/bar, I'm sure it was a great time. If you must know about my night, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Considering New Years last year was probably the [...]
A lot of times when I run I listen to full albums. I try to choose albums I know well so I can sing along in my head and pay less attention to the fact that I'm (usually) bored shirtless. I rarely compile elaborate mixes of songs intended to spur speed bursts or keep a [...]
No better way to spend a Sunday night than grilling cheese dogs and brats with friends on Mt. Washington, drinking someone's home-brewed chocolate stout. I defy you to cap your weekend in a more enjoyable fashion. Holy shit I'm flying home tomorrow! That's awesome! What the fuck am I going to do first? Breakfast burritos [...]
Another day, another Swan Fungus reader finds their way into my presence. I promise one of these times if you approach me I won't act like I'm having a panic attack. It's just…in my mind you're all so mentally disturbed. And you all carry weapons around. Sharp weapons. Seriously, what type of person reads this [...]
Earlier this fall we were treated to Twin Shadow, the solo project of Brooklyn-based George Lewis, Jr. His adoration for post-punk was no secret, with a post-punk arsenal of rhythmic reverb that beautifully complemented Lewis' deep and somber voice – which naturally fell somewhere between Morrissey and Ian McCulloch. Barring some more lighthearted moments like [...]

Four Tet: There is Love in You I've been a big Four Tet fan since it was considered a Fridge side project and have loved everything I've heard Kieren Hebden do. Rounds is his best, still, and Pause and Everything Ecstatic are excellent as well. When he released the Ringer EP last year I was glad to see Hebden stretching into new territory, even if more overtly danceable music veers away from where my tastes typically lie. I really liked that EP anyway, and I like a lot of [...]

I have stood on the shore of a strange land With my back to the wind on the black sand I can feel you breathe ( The Black Meat by Bark Psychosis ) The more I listen to this band, the more I like it, so thanks fbc for introducing them to me photo by Maciej Duczynski Posted in cherry treats, Iceland, moods, musics

after a 2-week break it's time to get back into the fray. and here's a mix that i've been tinkering with for a while now. if you're a last fm user and a fan of post rock, then you're probably aware of samuel macklin 's uk post rock group and therefore of the compilations he's been posting. in which case, here's my version. post rock, by definition, is hard to define, but i think the original premise of post rock as a genre was the idea of the rock song deconstructed. think of it as [...]

Local Anesthesia is a new regular feature that focuses on music and issues concerning Louisville. As reported a couple of days ago, I honestly feel a little sore about the Black Angels not coming to Headliners. In part from the sobering, sinking feeling of not being able to see a band of this caliber at a good venue five minutes from my apartment, but mostly on ethos. This recent turn catalyzed a need for me to share some observations as both a local and an outsider - a recent transplant to Louisville who has been in the [...]
Starbound - Tribute Site Not to be confused with 70s disco megahit, DI (the band) was a band of Londoners who, in the late 80s decided to formed a band under the influence of bands like Wire and Joy Division (as well as general output of Factory label). In the next decade, they produced a number [...]

if you didn't know, today is indie bass player recognition day, a day that, as a sometime indie bass player myself, i cherish like a junkie cherishes his works. there aren't many famous bass players, especially not famous indie bass players. while guitarists are gods, then bass players are either scorned (hello bill wyman, mark king), or overlooked altogether (erm most everyone else). of course there are exceptions, but they're generally recognised for their technical ability rather than contribution to songwriting (hello jaco pastorius, billy sheehan). and indie isn't a genre that generally acknowledges musicianship. [...]
It's 4 am, and I'm listening to Bark Psychosis and some free jazz simultaneously using two separate media players. It's great. Also: the new Bon Iver EP leaked a couple of days ago. I'm rather unimpressed. The title track Blood Bank is pretty nice, and the spacey reveb'd out electric guitars at the end put a smile on my face. The vocal line is a little repetitive, having only one memorable melody line, and lacking but the rest of it is pretty much abysmal. Beach [...]

"Everyone has AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS!" Louise had a lovely birthday dinner (she made traditional Danish foods, and also there was a bowl of macaroni and cheese with hot dogs!), we played a rousing game of Apples to Apples, and now Tom, Thesy and I are watching Team America: World Police , which pathetic Thesy has never seen before. The pathetic girl. Hey, here's a mix tape! Please enjoy! RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB [...]
Hey, apparently there's a cure for GRID HIV now ! The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a brilliant doctor from Germany performed a bone marrow transplant on an HIV patient using marrow from a naturally immune donor. Since white blood cells are derived from bone marrow, the HIV-resistent bone marrow produced HIV-resistent WBCs with the CCR5 mutation that prevents HIV from binding to white blood cells, and all traces of the virus disappeared from the patient's bloodstream. Since the transplant, doctors have not detected any signs of the virus for 600 days. [...]
Hey, in case you haven't noticed, my website broke. I don't even know if anyone will be able to read this, but have no fear, I'm trying to fix things. And by that I mean I'm crying and jerking off and submitting questions to support forums across the Internet, and waiting for some kind soul to help me. The page might be fixed at any moment, or it might never be fixed. Who the fuck knows, really? By the way, if anybody reading this knows anything about WordPress, Blogger, 1and1, and subdomains, now would be a really good [...]

it's suddenly got chilly here, which means i can finally shed the shorts and t-shirts and start layering up. right now i'm wrapped up in a thick jumper. i like winter clothes. they remind me of long walks in the country, gloves on and breath steaming; equally long waits at bus stops in the cold; warm pubs with warm bitter; dark monday mornings struggling into work. in my curent nostalgiac frame of mind, i miss all of these things equally. this onset of autumn requires a mix to celebrate. some bands immediately lend themselves to this topic (i'm [...]
Filed under: Around the World Spinner.com : With the Beijing Olympics imminent, a chat with Sa Dingding -- a rising Chinese star on the global-music stage -- seemed a perfect opportunity to gain some insight into the vast and daunting world of her country's sounds. F/i are one of those bands that changes everything for you. It is so druggy and so psychedelic it makes everything else "psychedelic" seem somewhat tame. And they're not just one of those space-rock clones who heard Space Ritual and purchased a bunch of delay pedals or an analog synthesizer. These guys experimented to the max, and the results are stunning. Their bursts of heavy, cosmic goodness are constantly wrestling with amplifier buzz and radio static and sundry other forces. If you want straight-ahead psych chug-a-lug, try Paradise Out Here . They formed in Wisconsin [...]
Are your brackets busted? This was the first year since I was a wee little one that I neglected to fill out an NCAA tournament bracket in advance. March Madness is only marginally interesting when there are no dramatic storylines or Cinderella teams. Two one-seeds and two two-seeds in the Final Four is about as captivating as the Patriots making the Super Bowl. With all this (one paragraph of) sports talk, I've probably lost my entire Sunday evening audience of sexually ambiguous, mildly anorexic, ironic-shirt-wearing, antisocial music snobs. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With [...]
