Looking for concert trends across our top live picks from this past year, the magic of the live music experience in 2009 seemed inversely proportional to the size of the venue relative to the artist playing there. Whaaa? Let's try that again: the bigger the artist crammed into the smaller the venue made for some of the most mind-blowing shows we've seen in quite some time. Was it a result of the recession? A reflection of our thrifty times? Or simply dumb luck on our part? We're not really sure, but from the world's biggest metal band [...]

Somebody out there has been good. Real good. Our friends over at Relapse have given us an amazing prize pack to give to our readers. RELAPSE CD Prize Pack: Baroness - Blue Record Revocation - Existence Is Futile Dysrythmia - Psychic Maps Minsk - With Echoes in the Movement of Stone Coalesce - OXEP Relapse is a pretty solid label in my opinion putting [...]
Kudos to Bradford Cox, Gucci Mane, Mastodon and Pill

Are you fed up with all of the 2009 Year-End Online Music Lists yet? We're not! And clearly, since you're here and all, you're not either. Right on. What you'll find below is a list of our "top" 15 albums released in 2009. What does this mean? Our favorites? The best records we heard all year? Both, yes. These are the bests of our favorite albums that found their way to our ears this past year. The most favorite-bests, the ones we couldn't do without even if we tried. As we did last year , and the [...]

So this is it. My favorite full-length albums of the year. So many other blogs post their top songs of the year, but I guess I'm a bit more old-school (and probably older) than most of them. I prefer the album format rather then just ranking singles against one another. I posted Part I of this list yesterday, but there are so many good albums from 2009 that I had to leave off the list completely (unless I was going to make it an even 100). Maybe next year, right? Also, fuck all the [...]

Merry Rotting Christ mas, ladies and gentleman, and welcome to the year-end installment of this column. Though other, more industrious writers have cast their vision back across the decade to craft comprehensive lists of goodness, spanning all ten years, this morsel of prose will focus solely on the dying year. Some of 2009's best offerings have already been profiled in my two previous columns , so spots are reserved in my top ten for Baroness' Blue Album , Shrinebuilder's self-titled release, and Gama Bomb's Tales from the Grave in [...]
Last year Baroness played a truly stellar set that left me weak in the knees; this year, despite having had actual knee surgery back in April, I felt pretty damn sturdy after dem "stoner-metal-meets-Ford-truck -jingle" Georgians finished their consistent yet largely humdrum set a couple weeks ago. As many of y'all have commented recently, this year's Blue [...]
The Savannah metal band grows into maturity and wisdom on their latest album

Someone in this band has been listening to Wishbone Ash . That's the first thing that popped into my mind after giving the new Baroness a spin. It's not surprising since Baroness has always brought in traditional classic rock influences as well as some psychedelic stylings to their brand of metal. 2007's Red Album (nice Grand Funk reference) was one of the better albums of that year, but Blue Record is a big improvement. This year has seen real breakthrough albums from Mastodon and [...]

He was a Benedictine priest, a linguist, a foremost world authority on archaic pre-Christian, pre polyphonic music. He was also the most famous exorcist in Venice, Italy as well as a quantum physicist. He was a world class scholar who did not view science and the metaphysical to be differentiated by a hard and fast line. Father Marcello Pelligrino Ernetti was born in 1925 outside of Rome and entered the Benedictine abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice at the age of 16, remaining there until his death at the age of 69. Ernetti first crossed the [...]
The latest MetalSucks intern found that suggesting Five Finger Death Punch for "best album of '093 didn't go so well. And the hits keep on coming. Chad Bowar of About.com is the latest to post his year-end list. Some of the usual suspects are there (Mastodon, Baroness, Coalesce) but some of the albums that seem to be [...]
John Dyer Baizley of Baroness "I want to thank you guys for coming out tonight. This is a dream of ours and it is because of you that we are here. You shouldn't be clapping for us. Come up to us after and say hi. We're not fucking rock stars." And with that ended a powerful set from Baroness. And Talk to them I did. I shook hands with the bass player Summer, who seemed to be having the most fun all night truly getting into the music. Chatted with the drummer, Allen Blickle [...]

Over the last few years it has somehow become hip and cool to like metal bands again despite metal being and inherently uncool genre. Sure, there's lots of shredding and Guitar Hero idolization associated with metal acts, but these bands still sing about dragons and mythical fantasy lands or wear tight leather pants and too much guyliner. Savannah, Georgia's Baroness is not one of "those" metal bands. At its core, their latest album, Blue Record , is a sludge-metal masterpiece, but even more melodic and clear than anything the band has done before. [...]
Sometimes I feel fairly certain that a substantial portion of the people who leave comments on MetalSucks would be considered legally brain dead by most medical doctors. Having said that, I'm glad they read our website. Here's what happened in the world of metal this week: We spoke to Darkthrone's Fenriz, Iron Age's Wade Allison, and Swallow [...]
