From delicate pop melodies to growling delta blues riffs, 'The Barr Brothers' boasts a wide-ranging mix, heightened by [...]

A quick re-up here. The Barr Brothers debut came across my desk halfway through last year, and it was a jaw dropping collection set of songs. "Beggar in the Morning" was probably my favorite song of 2010, and the album has aged like vintage wine or single malts. Secret City made the smart move to distribute this beautiful record. Rather than review it again, I just wanted to bring attention to the re-release. Grab this now, folks. You won't be sorry. At the end of the day, it's too easy to [...]

Packing The Dakota Tavern at well past two in the morning on a Thursday night is no easy feat, but The Barr Brothers , a relatively new band from Montreal, managed to do just that. Comprised of brothers Brad and Andrew Barr (on guitar and drums respectively), Sarah Page on harp and Andres Vial on pump organ and bass, this unique folk quartet set aside their quieter sounds for a more rocking, Dakota-friendly set.

Some volume issues during a performance on screen render the crowd restless. Murmurs ripple through, speculating and questioning. "Can't hear a fucking thing!" cuts through the darkness, crass and unconstructive. "Well, you should've been there!" retorts another faceless voice, more lighthearted. By the end of the film, he couldn't have been more right.

A friend sent the above video to Barr's "The B-Side Is Silent" along the day Dash Snow died, an inadvertent tribute more moving and muted than, say, yesterday's New York Times's uncomfortably hard-e... Continue reading "Dash Snow: A Community Memorial Now Open at Deitch" >
post-party Upset the Rhythm is the independent London label that's always taken good care of Los Angeles—they were one of the labels participating in that first burst of No Age vinyl in 2007 and also put out releases for L.A. bands like Soft Boiled Eggies and BARR and now Foot Village, who will be releasing their [...]

Though I will be attending Northside festivities tomorrow evening, the New Museum is hosting an event with MEN (featuring JD Samson of Le Tigre fame) and Brendan Fowler (aka BARR or whatever else he may be going by the name of these days). On the surface, this seems like a pretty cool event, but part of me just needs to question if Fowler is even going to show up. Okay, so I know the obvious, Fowler has a piece in the show currently exhibited at the New Museum--reason enough for him to give a performance. I [...]
People have remarked that it's unusual to see a music blog on LiveJournal. It's a very low-rent way of doing things. I guess I'm a low-rent kind of guy. Hosting Doklands elsewhere would give it more status, they imply, but again I'm not terribly bothered by the trappings of social success. And then there's the context: LiveJournal is full of introspective teenagers and Harry Potter fans. I dare say it is. Everyone tells me so, but I've never gone out of my way to try and confirm this. I'm just not that interested. [...]

Malmö-based psych/hardrock/progg label collective Record Heaven will be releasing new records this fall with Magnolia , Barr (Sthlm) and Peter Lindahl ( In the Labyrinth ).

Stop Chris Martin, you bastard, you're killing me ! I usually write about good new music in this blog cause that's what it's all about. You think it's easy to find? Hell no, you've got to wade through many a stream to pan for that there gold. This year I've looked forward to a number of releases which turned out to be pyrite. So, now and then, I feel obligated to share the bad with the good, so you can be [...]

Hot Damn. BARR is playing tonight and you definitely need to check them out. They're an LA group that does talking songs (kind of like former Mercury Music Editor Adam Gnade . BARR's, however, are a little less poetic, literary and picturesque, instead substituting introspection, personality and stream of conscious, touchy-feely humor to great effect. "The Song is the Single" is a fucking brilliant take on the nature of music and art and the artist. Jam that shit. Also check out "My List of Demands" [...]

So sometimes I feel like Said the Gramophone ought to act as a document, and so if I go with that for a sec I have to admit that basically I've been listening to nothing but this BARR record for the past week. * The song that Dan posted more than a year ago is something I've been returning to for months but finally I went out and got Summary and it's baffling me in the best kind of baffle; making me go wow holy whoa god, huh, he [...]

OK, too much time in the past. Let's snap into the present. You know, there's a sh*t-ton of great music being made every single second on this planet. Here's a band, or a dude, or a dude-band, that I had never heard of until I caught this song on Pitchfork's Top 100 Tracks Of 2007 . You know, there's a chance it might bother you, but also there's a chance that you will be like me and listen to it a lot and wish you could remember all the lyrics so you could sing it to [...]
