This post is mainly for linkage purposes. Last March, I started a series called Singles Going Steady, which is a trawl through my CD single collection, before I box it up and consign it (most of it anyway), to the back of some cupboard in my house. Everyone knows that CD singles is a format that's close to extinction, but there's a lot of great music on mine that's worth celebrating while I still have them to hand. The list below will obviously be added to over time. Just before it comes however, being [...]

Benjamin Evans - Adorno Concerto (2007) When makes an album "best" of the year? What does it mean to call Radiohead's new album the best ... that it's the most intruiguing electonic-influenced rock album crafted in rural England with an unlimited budget and press coverage? Do the best albums have the best promise, the best musicianship, the best [...]

HEALTH Genre: Rock / Experimental From: Los Angeles, California United States HEALTH was six months old the first time they played for real people. Before that, there was more talk than music, mostly about art, food, sex, animals, records, drugs, politics and sleeping. After two more shows in Los Angeles, they self released a 7'' and went on tour. While they were traveling, people [...]

Brendan Fowler has all the trappings of a "cool art guy." He was friends with Animal Collective in high school and played music with them. He is the editor and a main writer of free art magazine ANP Quarterly . He plays in the band ( New England Roses ) with JD Samson of Le Tigre. And, of course, he's a respected artist. Besides that, however, he also spends time making music under the name BARR , which is part music, part spoken [...]
Summer is right around the bend, and do you want to know how I can tell? No its not because of the unseasonably cold temperatures, or the fact that the calendar says its getting closer, its because every blogger in New York is posting about the free shows around town! This is the reason we all live in New York, because we get the best free shows all summer long. This year we have, Malajube, The Hold Steady, Animal Collective, The New Pornographers, Fujiya & Miyagi, and that's just naming a few. Man I love this town! (P.S. - I'm [...]
Welcome back from SXSW everyone, how was the trip? Well while you fine folks were all in the nice sun going from show to show we were shoveling several inches of snow off our walks and cars and trying to recover from our St. Patrick's hang overs. This week though, its all about New York with some freaking amazing lineups. Here's what we got... Monday: Fujiya & Miyagi @ Barnard College 8pm $5 As you may have heard Fujiya & Miyagi are awesome! You may also have heard that they sold out several shows at [...]

First impressions of BARR /Brendan Fowler: This is different! Kind of crazy, and sometimes it seems too silly to be palette-able, but enjoyable none-the-less. Reminds me a wee bit of Bradley Hathaway . It's nice that this guy's out there doing his own thing, for his own enjoyment - fuck the boundaries . The album title, Beyond Reinforced Jewel Case , is apt - relishing in the fact that musical foundations are there to be built upon, and trying to push his art as far as it will go. Basically he's doing provocative and [...]

Barr - The Song is the Single (5RC 2007) Barr - Summary / 5RC At some point we had to come to this. Any good hipster's Friday night out should rightfully be dampered by the thought that, yeah, 5 Rue Christine has evaporated (even if Gertrude Stein's Paris residence remains, which I guess is some consolation). Contrary to popular belief, it was not absorbed by big sister Kill Rock Stars; Slim Moon's departure to Nonesuch was not something I saw coming, and living in a post-5RC [...]

Simon Hoegsberg from Tower Of Babel OK, I'm way SERious. Did you GET the memo? I didn't really send one, but I thought about it. The crisp white paper was going to pronounce importance while the body described how Window XP's "Critical Stop" sound is amazingly similar to the stringed beat that introduces Lauren Hill's song Everything Is Everything . And it was going to note that Clinic's clenched jaw pushes out mashed lyrics much like a meat [...]

Simon Hoegsberg - The Tower Of Babel 2 BARR - Half of Two Times Two (mp3): This is an empowerment anthem stripped down to the basics, thoughtfully designed to fold in its edges and fit squarely in your pocket. The strength of a gospel choir is pruned to the poignance of a single spoken word, the complexity [...]

Panther - How Well Can You Swim (this.bigstereo.net) The Maccabees - X-Ray (South Central Remix) (headphonesex.co.uk) Grizzly Bear - Knife (Girl Talk Remix) (pitchforkmedia.com) !!! - Heart of Hearts (pitchforkmedia.com) Raekwon - Verbal Intercourse (moistworks.com) Dean & Britta - You Turn My Head Around (fluxblog.org) BARR - Half of Two Times Two (Newer Version) (saidthegramophone.com) Mirwais - Miss [...]
BARR - "Half of Two Times Two (Newer Version)" It would be nice if I agreed with anything he were saying, and it would be cool if I were as hopeful as this melody, but that's why he's playing the song, right? Instead the melody is like drinking rich chocolate liquid, or walking on light-up sidewalks, or flying. And instead I hear the lyrics like a foreign language, their cadence instead like running my finger and thumb along a paper covered in staples, all stapled in a row, as if 100 were stronger than 1. And my ears are pretending [...]
I filmed the Xiu Xiu show last month -Sept 27th- and finally upped a couple on youtube. I don't know if I'll actually post the rest unless people actually want to see it. I didn't post too much about the show before so -This was my first time seeing Xiu Xiu and I enjoyed it thoroughly. They didn't have that cool bell contraption that was in that video from the other post. But they did have a drummer this time which was good. He had his own instrumental set beforehand which [...]
