News International (I do not need to tell you) is one of the most repellent organisations in the world, but this whole business might just end up working out to their advantage, in a twist of supremely Machiavellian achievement. NI decided to close the News of the World a long time ago, as you can see from this Guardian article detailing the plans being set in place to deal with its disappearance, dating from weeks ago. The sunonsunday.com URL was registered before any of this even kicked off. As much of a [...]
Nick Cave's Grinderman will be releasing "Palaces Of Montezuma" as the third single from their Grinderman 2 record. It's most notable for the stellar line 'the spinal chord of JFK wrapped in Marilyn Monroe's negligee'. Included with the album version of the song will be remixes by Barry Adamson, and Cenzo Townshend. Their will also be a reworking of Grinderman's "When My Baby Comes" by Cat's

John Barry died today at the age of 77. Without him, the Sixties wouldn't have swung quite as bold or nearly as brassy. You don't need me to tell you of his work on 11 Bond films, or that his musical scores packed full of stabbing brass, sweeping orchestration and exotic leads (dulcimer! vibes!) often conjured up images of carefree playboys at the wheel of a Jaguar, speeding through the Swiss Alps with a Ray Ban-ed and mini-skirted female for company (although that sounds a lot like a spoof scene from Austin Powers , but you know what [...]
By Lommi NoirRidiculous Street Sucks…And I am in Exile. Trapped in the vile penumbra of NouveauVille and I don't even know if it's worse than eating shit in Cook County. I don't even care. It's all feels like a kind of slow, surreal Death Box Shuffle. A dance of the skulls. A little jig with the monkey on the grave of my life while the ghost gramophone plays "Nearer my God to Thee". A little song

from their up and coming release 3 , frenchies Nouvelle Vague remake the Bunnymen classic "All My Colours" with a little help from the bunnyman himself. McCulloch's vox add a stunning compliment to the delicate, loungy, bossa nova atmosphere that Nouvelle Vague create so well. we're digging it, and feel they are one of the few acts that can actually do the "covers" thing right. the new album also features tracks by the Sex Pistols, Soft Cell, Talking Heads, The Police and more. other collaborations include Depeche Mode's Martin Gore, Terry Hall of The Specials and Funboy [...]

Barry Adamson - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Pelvis (Featuring Jarvis Cocker)

Do songs titled Lullaby, which include lines about goblins, make you just a little bit wary? Yes, me too, but don't worry because I promise you that this is really good. What it recalls for me the most is perhaps a much more minimal, less electronic version 0f Goldfrapp's breakthrough Felt Mountain, and this is a very good thing. The music isn't so much frivolous as seductively flighty. It recalls the deceptive innocence of Barry Adamson's wonderful song Vermillion Kisses, where the impression of childish simplicity is never so convincing as to fail to convey its own sense [...]
This album, his 7th studio release, finds Adamson in a furious focus, fully embracing a pop sensibility and fusing it with dark, swinging blues, soul, funk, out-jazz and filmic takes. 1. Barry Adamson - Spend A Little Time Barry Adamson - Who Killed Big Bird ?
on a long bus journey a friend & i made playlists for each other & did a music player swap. he wanted to read at the same time so requested songs without words, less distraction. playlist made, i forgot all about it until a few weeks ago following a discussion with some friends about the merits of lyrics vs no lyrics, and the way that you can build your own stories up out of the music, let your imagination run wild with it. as i went to sleep that night i listened to the playlist i had made and now [...]
Rain rain go away, come again another day. Before I delve into my usual ramblings, Who ever wants the rain to come again another day? Any farmers who read this blog need not prove me wrong... but I mean unless that saying was coined by a farmer, it doesn't make sense, the rain is always the pits and ruins my mood. [...]

Sorry I'm a little late with these, but there has just been so much happening on the Internets lately, I haven't been able to keep up with Drake's voluminous output. Conspicuously absent from this week's "Take" is the latest from Canada's Tokyo Police Club , I guess they won't be making " Drake's Top 100+ Albums " of this year, (but perhaps FOTC will). -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 04.22.08 I'm a bit torn on whether this is a good week for releases... on the [...]
Some people were just meant to write film soundtracks. Barry Adamson is one of them. After a decade of playing in bands such as Magazine and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, he finally released his first solo album, Moss Side Story . It was one of the all-time great film soundtracks. There was no accompanying film, but little things like that don't really matter when you've finally found your idiom. It was a calling card, and a very effective one. Since then he's contributed music to a number of films. [...]

Barry Adamson is one bad mofo. The former bassist of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Magazine makes jazzy, noirish soundtracks to self-imagined films that constantly loop through his head, and hes been on the longest hep-cat streaks Ive ever seen. His newest album, Back to the Cat , is an amazing collection of jazzy, gospel, soul-inspired songs strung together in a secret agent package. Ive been geeking out over it like mad. MP3: Barry Adamson - "Straight 'til Sunrise" [...]

I'm a bit torn on whether this is a good week for releases... on the one hand, it's right in my wheelhouse as far as soundtracks go ( Flight of the Conchords , latest from Barry Adamson,) but I think on the whole it's too early to tell. Other new releases this week come from Elbow , Tokyo Police Club , Chris Mills , Lyrics Born (poached in last week's post ,) Thalia Zedek Band , Billy Bragg The Night Marchers (John Reis of RFTC) , Don Cavalli [...]
The first four releases by The Replacements are being reissued this week (remastered with bonus tracks). Today through Friday, Kevin Cole will be featuring each of these albums with a giveaway on the Afternoon Show . Each day will focus on a different release, so tune in! Besides those seminal albums, there is a bevy of brilliant new releases this week for all musical tastes: Barry Adamson and Lyrics Born for the groove shakers, Amelia and Don Cavalli for the roots lovers, Monotonix and The Night Marchers for the thrashers, Elbow and The Cinematic Orchestra [...]
