I honestly thought I was done with politics. Watching us commit genocide in Iraq despite the protests across the entire country, and then watching the Lib Dems spinelessly capitulate to the rapacious, craven Tory lizards once they got their little sniff of power just sickened me. Right, I thought, I am done with this shit, it is just a gigantic waste of everyone's time. However, the Tories haven't just been shit, they've been a repellent disgrace, governing with a sort of vindictive, cackling glee generally reserved for people in plastic armour in the Star Wars movies. THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Danzig w/ 2Cents, DevilDriver Tuesday, May 10 Center Stage - 1374 West Peachtree Street in Atlanta 30309 Admission $25 ADV / $27 DOS / Purchase Tickets Explaining why you should go to a Danzig show is fucking inane. The Let's Get Lyrical campaign was born of a desire to combine Edinburgh's status as an official City of Literature, with Glasgow's as a City of Music. There are events being held throughout February and it will come as no surprise to discover that they are a bit of a step up from the dreary indie pish I usually feature on these pages. As you can imagine, there are an awful lot of scholarly things that can be written about this topic and, as you can probably also imagine, you aren't going to read [...]

Welcome to the start of this year's Song, by Toad Festive Fifty, where I list, in order, my favourite fifty songs of the year. As with the albums of the year, I have had to exclude Song, by Toad Records bands from this list. Partly this is to stop me inevitably wounding the pride of whichever bands fared less well than their label mates, and partly to stop the label collectively dominating this list too much. I don't think the concept of objectivity is possible, or even all that relevant, when it comes to discussing what music you [...]

Apparently the holidays make musicians and record labels want to share lots of music and by share I mean give it away for free. Here are some of the places I've been going to for the goodies. Joe Purdy - Download his 12th album, This American, for free. A long time favorite singer/songwriter of mine, I really think you should check this one out. http://joepurdy.com/ Highways [...]

Friday's soundtrack is probably going to be this new Barton Carroll disc, 'Together You And I'...all day. That wasn't my plan, but I have just put it in and am half way through and I am already dying to hear all of these songs again. If you aren't familiar with Barton Carroll he has spent a lot of time playing with other artists, like Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray, Micah P. Hinson, and Dolorean - as well as writing and recording his own material. I am such a sucker for singer/songwriter's with less than traditional voices, and I think [...]

Carroll continues to establish himself as one of the best singer-songwriters out there. Barton Carroll has kept himself busy in the shadows of other bands -- playing with Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray, Micah P. Hinson, and Dolorean -- but it's high time that his solo discs start getting the attention they deserve. He recorded his self-titled debut in 1999, but it went unreleased until about two years after 2006's Love & War (itself recorded in 2001) made some critical headway. So the picture you get of Carroll is...

Sorry for not having the Graboid up last week, but I've included those releases ( Spoon , Surfer Blood , Editors ) in with the already incredibly amount of great releases that are available this week. So much good amazing stuff to choose from, that one would be hard-pressed to decide where to spend their hard-earned cash. Two albums that I'm extremely excited about and will surely be picking up at some point this week are Beach House's awe-inspiring third album Teen Dream and The Magnetic Fields' [...]

Barton Carroll is likely to have had a hand in something you heard before, though you may be unfamiliar with his name. He's toured and/or recorded with a number of folk-rock bands such as Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray and Dolorean - and now he's got a sizable catalog of his own material, including his latest and fourth album, Together You and I . This is the first I've heard from Carroll and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed, especially by his songwriting, which is sometimes emotive and personal, and at other times clever and witty, but always evocative. [...]

I love Barton Carroll. The first time I heard him it all just sounded like boring old meat-and-two-veg alt-country, which it kind of is, but there is definitely something special about it. Basically, this music is all about the lyrics. Which is not to say that I don't love the actual tunes or the instrumentation, but the really exceptional stuff is in words. It's all very simple, but the storytelling is deft and poignant. The subject matter is so close to the generic paradigm that it can take a little time to realise that he pulls almost every [...]

It's freezing outside and (just slightly) covered in snow (about half an inch) so naturally the entire nation has ceased to function. Erm, okay, it really isn't that cold and the snow really isn't that big a deal in all honesty but of course given the worst weather conditions we usually have to deal with are constant and life-sapping drizzle it seems that it's all come as a bit of a shock to the nation as a whole. We live in a city by the sea of course, which means that we never get the sunshine which is [...]

The cold weather has descended upon Tampa, dipping below freezing and killing the top quarter of my beautiful-gold-whatsit plants*. I'm countering Mother Nature's devious meteorological move with my usual trustworthy defense: excellent music! You may chill my bones, cold weather front, but the music warms me back to life. Well, technically it makes me dance, which then warms me back up. Close enough, in my book. * Not their scientific name Photo by Giulia Mazza Here's a track [...]

6. Barton Carroll - The Lost One I know nothing about Barton Carroll, I wasn't looking forward to this album at all, and then when it landed in my lap I still refused to quite get it for ages; maybe it's because it's stylistically quite unadventurous. The big difference, though, is that absolutely every single song on this album, despite flirting with cliche rather frequently, is compelling. They all have you perking up when they come on in their turn, thinking 'oh good, this song'. Barton Carroll - Those [...]
