Nick Bostick That Arcade Fire will release a new record this year - possibly/probably produced by or at least involving James Murphy - is pretty much a given. But also a given is that it won't be out until Fall, at the earliest, because a) it's already Spring and it's not done, and b) Fall is still when all the big records come out and this is about as big as they get. It would be nice to be able to say that Arcade Fire violinist Sarah Neufeld will be able [...]

There was a last minute changes on today's show. I was suppose to have a guest in the studio and play some tunes but that person had to back out last minute. But I did managed to get one-half of the Ottawa act Big Dick . To talk about the upcoming show this Saturday and debut album on Dirt Cult Records . Have a listen to the show . Here is the playlist: [...]

Merry Christmas Eve! Had my radio show on Christmas Eve. So I decided to play alot of Christmas Holidays tunes. Thanks to The Line of Best Fit , I mostly played from the Ho! Ho! Ho! Norman Wong Considering their fanbases intersect pretty heavily, it wouldn't have been unreasonable to think that Stars' Autumn jaunt supporting Metric across Canada's finest arenas would constitute the bulk of their touring in support of their latest effort The North . Not unreasonable, but also incorrect. Following forays to Europe and Australasia this Winter, Stars will embark on another transcontinental tour in the Spring with certain cities hosting a two-night stand that the band promise will be more than just repeated sets. They've dubbed these shows "Evenings [...]

Ingram Barss There's been a series of articles The Grid for the past year called Then & Now that has been diligently recording the history of Toronto's musical history by way of its clubs and venues, many of which have been consigned to history regardless of what legendary acts have sweat upon their stages. It's truly fascinating reading - especially if you take the time to look up what sort of pedestrian businesses reside at those addresses today - but it's comforting to know that the [...]

In what had to be one of the loveliest shows Toronto will see this summer, Basia Bulat and Andrew Bird melted hearts in their respective sets on a day when Torontonians were, for once, not melting from heat. Even though there’d be rain while we’d be on a pseudo-beach at the waterfront, and armed with umbrellas and the like, it was as if these musicians warded off the storm as we watched a pink sunset and were treated to a nice breeze. Now, if you haven’t been to Echo Beach, let me tell you a bit about [...]

Derrick Belcham It figures that the first year that I would have been able to actually attend the long-list unveiling for the Polaris Music Prize , they up and move it from its usual home atop the Drake clear across the country to give Vancouver a taste of what the grand unveiling of the 40 albums selected as the top musical achievements in Canada over the past 12 months is like. But that's alright because as it turns out, this was also the first year that I don't need to make any changes to [...]
Bowerbirds + Basia Bulat Mr. Small's / 06.13.2012 / Doors 7:00 / $15 Words by Brendan If knowing that Bowerbirds was described by John Darnielle (he of Mountain Goats notoriety) as his "favorite new band in forever" isn't enough for you, by all means, read on. This band has matured and grown a lot over the short course of three records, and their latest release, The Clearing , shows a huge breakthrough for them. [...]

Filed under: News Karl Winters, Getty Polaris Music Prize winner Owen Pallett , Basia Bulat , Ohbijou and Bry Webb are some of the musicians performing a special benefit concert tonight at Toronto's Lee's Palace for the Newman Boys Trust Fund , a fund established to help three young boys (aged 12, 10 and 7) after their mother was murdered in Oakville, Ontario in mid-January, the same day her estranged [...]

Frank Yang Friday nights usually find Torontonians spoilt for entertainment options and tonight will be no exception, but if you're at all unsure of what to do with your evening then consider heading down to Lee's Palace. It's hosting a benefit concert for three young Oakville boys whom, following a tragic series of events, were orphaned in January of this year and in addition to all the emotional devastation, were left in a dire financial situation. Their uncle, however, was a founding member of The Hidden Cameras and has deep connections to the [...]
Thanks to all my readers for hanging in there during a year of insane schedules for me that made my updates less than regular. According to the statistics, I've actually lost quite a bit of daily readers this calendar year for reasons that seem clear. I probably haven't posted nearly as often as in past years and not nearly as much new music. Or maybe there's other reasons. But there's still enough daily readers for me to want to continue, so thanks for continuing to come. And if there's a reason you personally do not come by here as often [...]
