Here we go again. This week, our theme word is "lost". Why? I don't know. Because I like 4 letter words, and at this most miserable time of the year, I'm feeling a little lost in general. I don't know if it's some sort of post quarter life crisis or just winter, but something just feels a bit off right now. But it's also not as bad as I'm making it sound, because this has actually been one of my more enjoyable/social winters in recent memory and I have tons of awesomeness in the [...]

Must listen to: "Lucia, at the Precipice," "About This Peninsula," Esben & the Witch are descending upon North America and are on a warpath, ready to take on [...]
2010 was a fantastic year for music and a very good start to a new decade of it.
To the uninitiated pressing play on a Gregory and The Hawk album and hearing the beautiful serenading of Meredith Godreau may come as a surprise. This deliberately cloudy moniker is designed to avoid being pigeonholed in the "female singer/songwriter" bin. It would therefore be lazy reviewing to say 'Leche' sounds like Emiliana Torrini recorded underwater, or that it is as endearing as [...]
I admire people like Toby who stick to genuine singles for their year end lists, but I can't do it. It's harder and harder to know what it means anyway. The Fresh & Onlys made a fancy video for "Waterfall" but didn't release it as 7" -- is it still a single? (It's not on list anyway, but another of theirs is.) I don't worry about it, clearly, as my #1 was an album cut. An AWESOME album cut. I do still feel singles are meant to be ephemeral. If I'm not listening to some of these tracks [...]

Natasha Khan - "Up In Flames" (Lynch/Badalamenti Cover) In honor of the week that brought us two electropop solo singles from David Lynch, I'd be remiss in not sharing this amazing cover of a Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti-penned tune by Bat for Lashes' Natasha Khan (with a little help from Jools Holland and his band) we stumbled upon while revisiting the director's musical oeuvre. "Up In flames" first appeared in (and was presumably written for) Lynch's 1990 film Wild At Heart , performed during the opening credits by KoKo [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Releases When you first listen to LA songstress Glasser, it's almost impossible not to recognize the similarities between her and other contemporary eclectic artists, such as Bjork and Bat For Lashes -- and trust us, the singer, who's real name is Cameron Mesirow, is well aware of the comparisons flying around. "I constantly hear it," Mesirow tells Spinner. "I think that people just think that I sit around [...]

Hey dubstep lovers, No clever name today, no theme, none of that BS this week -- I don't wanna overshadow three exciting jewels I've found: 1. Diplo's new dubstep compilation -- GAHHHHHHHH! As a Diplo fanatic, I'm thrilled that he's dedicated a whole album to the wobble. Hellz ya. More about that can be found on Mad Decent's website (I love Mad Decent so much). So many props. The top two tracks (below) are from the album. 2. Cixxx J - I've never tipped an artist before, so here goes my first [...]
It's not all that ghoulish, but a compelling set of songs from a variety of contributors nonetheless, including Silversun Pickups, Sky Ferreira, Gorillaz and Smashing Pumpkins.
Glasser is the solo project of Californian chanteuse Cameron Mesirow, who recorded much of her debut EP and the following 7" on Garageband. She refined and rearranged most of these songs for her debut record Ring , released earlier this month, and first track "Apply" is a perfect introduction: it's as sweet, sensuous, and slick as the rest of them. In a world (blogosphere?) where you can –- thank God -– find ghostly, haunting electronica delivered by powerful-voiced, talented women whose vocal ranges might not encroach on Mariah but are impressive nonetheless around almost every corner (see: Tamaryn, Zola [...]

In the fashionable spirit of Halloween and Twilight teens everywhere, we bring an offer you cannot possibly refuse, unless you're into zombies or something. Plus, it's great in all the ways shiny abstinence allegories are not. Do you know anyone who digs The Vampire Diaries series and its fine soundtrack sampling of dark pop and alternative music? Are you in need of some sexy tunes by Cruel Intentions ' Placebo and yet another dose of Gorillaz whilst rockin' a hot new [...]

Popular music that's doused in a little darkness, giving it a mature edge, or an alternative feel, washes over our palates much easier than the more common saccharin kind. Fond readers of The Recommender will kindly recall the likes of The Good Natured , Nedry , or the even darker Emika , but they're all respectively born from paths previously trodden by Bat For Lashes, Bjork or Portishead. They in turn have the likes of Kate Bush, P J Harvey and Liz Fraser to thank, so you see it's been a genetic bloodline for some time now [...]

Meet Oh Land , the most intriguing alt/folk/indie/electro/however -the-fuck-you'd-like-to-label- this artist you're going to hear about this year. Oh Land, born Nanna Øland Fabricius, grew up "with an opera singer for a mother, a theater organist for a father and Björk 's Homogenic on constant rotation" according to her MySpace . Points abound already, no? Following the homeland success of her 2008 debut album, Fauna , the gorgeous (see above; admire cheek bones) ballerina-turned-musician made a move to Brooklyn in 2010 to take her ambitions to the next level. Combining [...]
Vampires are all the rage nowadays. Twilight's tales of the glittering undead dominate at the box office and book shelves, while True Blood fills the void for water cooler moments left by the end of Lost . Most recently, the vampire craze has spread to network television in the form of an adaptation of L.J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries . Although Smith's series of novels about two vampire brothers obsessing over the same girl predates Twilight , the ubiquitousness of the Stephenie Meyer tomes is an undeniable factor in the development of the [...]
