Note: Joe Colly is a staff writer at Pitchfork and the culture and nightlife editor for The Feast Washington .] MP3: Gucci Mane - Up My Alley Gucci's been off his game recently, but this track, which made the internet rounds last week, is a total return to form. The guy is just an amazing lyricist, weaving through verse and chorus with such ease and dropping gems like "Your girlfriend, I'm 'bout to pull her / [...]

Bathcrones of Atlanta, being from the dirty South, may know the sounds of Summer than the frigid tunes of Winter nights, yet they have somehow compiled both into their newest songs. "Skull Island" starts like a twinkling, jingling Salvation Army bell-ringer but transforms into a steel drum-synth bombshell, this song is a banana boat in the snow. Hey doggies! Honestly, I've been kind of dreading this end-of-year list season, partly because the whole process of ranking music always feels pretty unnatural to me, but I also thought it could be a struggle finding enough material that I felt truly excited about. I think for the most part I felt pretty jaded about a lot of music in 2010, but looking back and putting together this list made me realize there was still a whole bunch of stuff that is really exciting, forward-looking and fun. Like Richard, my list ended up being super Olde English Spelling Bee heavy, [...]

MP3: Bathcrones - Damselfly (C Powers Remix) I thought Bathcrones' club heights were enough but when drenched in a typically C Powers type of purple there's even more room to get euphoric. Still can't stop listening to the guest mix he made us a while back which spliced similarly stardusty electronica with scruffy hip-hop beats and here he's chopping up and looping the weirdly comforting Crones synths and loosening the aquatic chill in favour of woozier feelings and grittier textures. myspace / myspace

If I might jump on the invent-a-micro-genre bandwagon, I'd suggest Bathcrones are woodland-creature wave. If one were on a walkabout through, say, an overgrown English garden, one would hear Bathcrones' music lilting from the lily pads, the product of gnomes playing chimes and whistles in the Lilac-laced pond. Except Bathcrones' Matthew Jackson Johnson bangs his bells and beats from Georgia. Anyway, there's some real magic in Psychorama , Johnson's first full length, out now on No Pain In Pop . VISI ☼NS :: JULY 2010 MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS with summer slowly winding down, we've all seemed to be in a funk here this past week on tumblr. it's no secret; blogs and music lovers adore summer, and it'll be sad to see it go. but i see no reason not to embrace the change from humidity to cooler weather, leaf color changing, halloween, returning to school; there are plenty of things to look forward to. but summer is still here. and for our july mixtape, [...]
Bathcrones: My Love, Wilma Everyone could use a little schmaltz now and then, and Bathcrones ' endearingly cheesy pop hits all the right marks. Masterminded by Atlanta's Matthew Jackson Johnson, this one-man project brings to the breezy flair of Sincerely Yours to sweaty New Age dance-floors. One of the softer cuts on Bathcrones' debut, "My Love, Wilma" rides a gentle wave of pulsing synths and neon tropicalia. It may veer close to "yoga music" territory, but its terminally [...]
Bathcrones - False Teeth My weary mind was turned into a tropical paradise last night as I settled into this new song from Bathcrones. "False... (Visit my blog for more!)

Bathcrones - False Teeth It's been a while since an album has caught me so completely off guard but it was an instant/intoxicating first love with Bathcrones' debut Psychorama . Infusing those shimmering club-friendly beats with the mesmeric positivity of new age synth muzik never felt so right or so real; the album plays out like a maximalist paean for clubs with skyward waterfalls and inter-dimensional soundsystems, and at others like a life-affirming prom nite ending to a teen movie. "Dancefloor transcendence" for sure. [ Bathcrones Myspace ] [...]
Bathcrones Atlantas' Bathcrones, bustling, robust, sweaty, sexy fucky tracks seem to hit the face like a deliberate splash of cold water, but not in the annoying sense rather in the refreshing one. Besides the immediate head-bobbing reflex, there's something stealthily melodic and lyrical to these tracks, and most days I'm totally up for things like that. Bathcrones - Psychorama ( mp3 )
