As headliners BATS took to the stage of Portobello's Lower Deck late on Saturday night, the atmosphere was palpable. It was the band's final show, a fundraiser, before they were set to regroup in Salem, Massachusetts to record their debut album. "We need the money," announced frontman/guitarist Rupert Morris. Early support act Jenny & the Deadites , an electro-hip hop duo from Dublin, were more or less doomed from the start. They began quietly and were quickly drowned out by the chatter of the steadily growing crowd. It got worse as the set wore [...]

Legendary kiwi rockers The Bats are to return this April with The Guilty Office , their first album of new material since 2005 (it'll be their 8th LP overall). It's coming out on Hidden Agenda and is available for pre-order now from Parasol . The record will be preceded in April by the 73 Don't You Rise EP, which collects four tracks from 1998-2003 and will be released by the mighty Slumberland Records . In other kiwi news, there's a rumor making the rounds that 2009 [...]

While we were producing issue 10 of State, we asked the bands featured to give us an MP3 to us so we could put our money where our mouths are. So here for your enjoyment is a 13 track compilation from some of the best new Irish bands and artists (as single listening or in a ZIP) which we expect to be making a good noise in 2009. The issue is embedded below (click to enlarge) so you can read and listen at the same time. Hah - the magic of multimedia! [...]

Minisnap are essentially the legendary New Zealand band the Bats sans group leader Robert Scott. Though one of my favorite albums of 2008, Bounce Around , has not generated much hype around the interwebs. It seems that a group of middle aged kiwis lacking their principal songwriter would deserve a quiet reception, but guitarist Kaye Woodward leads the band through 12 fantastic pop songs. Lead-off track "Bounce Around" should clear those winter blues and have you shaking your hips around the living room thinking that getting older doesn't seem so bad. Watch the video then download the [...]

These cats from the bay area caught my eye a few years back, with " temerpature. " Can't wait for Future Shock Coming Out January 26th

(photo by Jeremy Weiss) The boys in The Bronx released their third self-titled LP The Bronx (III) last month and played a few US shows to support it and then immediately flew out to Australia to play some dates that would end their live run for this year. But don't fear, because the LA punks are heading across the pond to the UK for some dates in late February. We're sure that these dates will shift as more are added as the new year begins, so watch out for them in [...]

A fruit bat colony has been put at risk when hundreds of pups were abandoned by their mother during heavy storms. More than 300 infant grey-headed flying foxes are being cared for at a bat hospital since they were left to fend for themselves in the last week. Most are suffering from hypothermia and deydration, and many have been attacked by swarms of flies. "'Normally, female flying foxes will go to the ends of the earth to save their babies, so it goes to illustrate how bad the storms were,' said carer Trish Wimberley of the [...]

Minisnap's appropriately titled Bounce Around album is another one of those records that has been neglected on these pages this year, but certainly not on my stereo. I meant to write about it in March when I bought it from Rough Trade, but again I profess a lack of time and my slow writing skills as pathetic excuses. Back in March and even now I couldn't believe that Kaye Woodward had been holding back so many great songs over the years. Especially when you consider that during the 10 year break that took from [...]

So the Hard Working Class Heroes weekend is nigh. What is the story with that fucking title though? It makes no semantic sense at all, either as a clumsy pun, or as some sort of social commentary on the acts' backgrounds? It sounds like a Billy Bragg style socialist-folk convention, or a weak, wistful nod back to the time when most Dublin bands were on the dole, as opposed to middle class, internet savvy, self-financed, meeja monkeys. And what's this about Heroes? As much as I admire a few of the bands playing, how many of them would [...]

We are two month into these mixes and they're still as hodgepodge as ever. Number Eight makes a distinct left turn at the end but I like it. And really, these mixes are about pleasing me first. Cover art photo taken by my friend Don -- not sure whether he meant for the eight toes poking through the shoes was meant to signifiy the mix number or not but I'd like to think so. There are still two mixes left after this so if you want to do art for one of them, drop a line and let [...]
