Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi Toronto natives METZ shook up the Echo on Wednesday night, marking the recent Pitchfork darlings’ first visit to LA. Although only on stage for less than 30 minutes, the trio tore through their self-titled, Sub Pop debut with an earth-shattering wall of sound and fuzz. It was the kind of sonic assault that was expectedly brutal, but exciting and welcomed in a masochistic kind of way. Vinyl Williams and Batwings Catwings opened the evening. [...]
Stereogum Fresh off their highly touted CMJ performance , new Sub Pop signees METZ made a memorable Los Angeles debut to a rowdy mosh pit at the Echo. Beers and people flew throughout the venue as METZ honed in on a sound that was reminiscent of the angular dissonance of Burning Airlines and punk fury of Agent Orange. Expect to see METZ at your favorite festivals next year ensnaring a wider audience. Batwings Catwings also were on the bill with their hard-edged sound while Vinyl [...]

Batwings Catwings have posted this new teaser track up on their Soundcloud page. They describe it as " A new track to share, Blue Dream. There are a handful more on the way in the coming months. This is just a little unmastered teaser. Hope you like. " We do. We do a lot. It sounds like it has come snarling and spitting out of CBGBs in 1978 and gleefully kicked every backside it has come across ever since. a Follow @madmackerel
@Seraphina_L on Sunday's Silver Lake Jubilee: The Silver Lake Jubilee continued on Sunday and pulled in even more attendees than it did on Saturday. The weather was warmer and the neighborhood embraced that as a chance to stroll the streets one more day since it was a long weekend. Higher ticket prices didn't seem to be an issue as people continued to walk in to the festival to enjoy food trucks, comedy, literary readings and music again. Even the face paint stations seemed to get a lot of action (or at least [...]

We're currently away for a few days so apologies for the paucity of detail with this post, but here are six tunes that tip the scales on the noisy side for you to enjoy (and scare the cat with). First up we have the full-on stoner onslaught of psych-rockers White Hills with a taste from forthcoming album Frying On This Rock and a perfect companion piece in the Ketamines fuzzed-up psych freakout of Kill Me Now from their new album Spaced Out . Next up is [...]

Blessed are the bands that still release real singles, thereby keeping alive the dying art of the B-side whilst simultaneously driving completists like myself batty. Los Angelinos Batwings Catwings paraded out the noisegasmic Radio single a while back, and now they're handing over the flipside simply as a way of giving back to fans. Early Exit is a synth-heavy neo-new wave workout that presses your nostalgia buttons without turning a cold shoulder to the band's signature serrated attack. Did I mention you can dance to it if you're so inclined? [...]
Our love for Batwings Catwings is still on-going. We’ve already interviewed them this year and we’re now happy to spread their track Early Exit all across your screen. It’s the B-side to their single Radio , which was out late last year, and it sounds like the kind of song Siouxsie Sioux might workout to.
Admittedly Batwings Catwings first caught our attention cos we liked the name, but then we listened and it turned out we liked the music too. Bowleg friends Foot Village had a hand in getting the band together when they happened to pass a megaphone, in mid-concert, to Batwing singer Dana Poblete onstage. Batwing drummer and electronics man Clay Johnson witnessed Dana wailing her heart out and soon sent her some backing tracks, asking her to write and sing on them. The Los Angeles band released their debut EP, Peacock Collection , last year which was then followed [...]
