Song Be Your Own Pet ~ " Black Hole " download (via lost turntable ) This has to be either one of the lamest things I have seen in a long time, or one of the better promotional attempts. So Universal Music has decided not to release three songs, in the US, ("Black Hole", "Becky", and "Blow Yr Mind") from Be Your Own Pet's album Get Awkward because they were too violent. Too [...]
I've got two videos to show you today, both from artists that have highly-approved-by-me albums released this year. Both videos also have unexpectedly violent endings. Hooray! The first is from funky neo-soul man, Jamie Lidell , who I last saw doing his thing at Pitchfork Fest a year ago. I hadn't heard of him at the time but his set completely won me over. The video is for fantastic single "Little Bit of Feel Good" where Jamie is seen courting a lady unicorn and dancing with her under colorful flashing lights. It's all fun and games until [...]
I just canceled my old shitty .mac account. It was a rip-off and I don't suggest anyone ever getting one for any reason. I stopped using it for my new posts ages ago but a few of my older posts that I kept the links active to still do. The most notable of these being the Urgh post. So if you're scouring the archives for some good shit and you come across a dead link don't tell me. I know and I'm on it. Be Your Own Pet Becky [...]
It's Good Friday and we gotta good mix for anyone lookin' for some new stuff to listen to. Could be you? After listening to what we wanted to share, we realized there's lotsa dancey! Before we get into that, let's talk some news. I don't love Pelosi but this is a very interesting speech she gave when meeting with the Dalai Lama. More about that here . France's Sarkozy is beefin' up the nukes. There's so much going on, get to reading ! Let's get to music. First [...]

No posts this weekend (I think) so DOUBLE posts today! And this second one is awesome. I am giving away a copy of Be Your Own Pet's new CD Get Awkward . Get ready to rock and possibly jump around a lot with Jonas, Jemina, Nathan, and John. Listen: "Zombie Graveyard Party!" (ysi) To win the copy of Get Awkward (I'll mail it to US, Canada, or the UK), all you have to do is be the first to name the kickass song with the word "Zombie" [...]

Jemina from Be Your Own Pet left a message on the band's MySpace bulletin today: i know everyone is super confused with the three missing songs on the US album . we didn't choose for this to happen and we're not trying to fuck anyone over with giving them an unfinished album. uniersal decided that becky, black hole, and blow yr mind were "too violent" to be released . talk about a bummer time! they gave us the choice of changing the lyrics and rerecording the songs, or [...]

If you're like us over here, you bought Nashville thunderbolt-toting rockers Be Your Own Pet 's sophomore album, Get Awkward , this past Tuesday. And, if you're still even more like us, you noticed that the tracklisting felt a little, er, light. Light like missing three full tracks, that is. In a statement put up on the band's MySpace page, lead yelper Jemina Pearl had this as a sort-of explanation: I know everyone is super confused with the three missing songs on the US album. We didn't choose for this to [...]

Now that SXSW is over, we can start preparing for all the new music that was premiered there. My picks for this week include DeVotchKa's A Mad & Faithful Telling , as well as Destroyer's Trouble In Dreams . There is a local release from Baltimore's Kadman and Gnarls Barkley surprised everyone by moving up their release at the last second. DeVotchKa A Mad & Faithful Telling ( Buy ) - " Transliterator " & Full Album Stream Destroyer [...]
I have been listening to the new Fuck Buttons album, Street Horrrsing, on repeat for weeks. The droning, electronic sounds have completely hypnotized me and I no longer understand why I need pop melodies to get me through my day. It seems pointless to have a couple of humans singing in key together, when we can have electronic sounds rising and falling and creating the same sort of emotion, just

Haven't recovered from SXSW yet? Well the lineup of new releases this week should do something to expedite the recovery process. So if you're heading out to your local record store this week be prepared to make some tough decisions. Check out this week's new releases, album art, and mp3's after the jump...
So I was in the record store yesterday flipping through the new releases when I find the new Be Your Own Pet album. In an age where the internet rules all, release dates are broadcast far and wide, and album leaks are expected, it's very hard not to get some advance warning of an album's release—and yet here was an album I wasn't expecting to see for at least a couple more months, sitting in my hot little hands waiting to be purchased. If you know Be Your Own Pet at all and understand where they came from, [...]

If you're a party hopper, today is your day. Well if you allow us to be biased for a minute ... you probably should head to Volume for our party (My Brightest Diamond, Nada Surf, Destroyer, Peter Morén, et al) and not leave until they stop pouring the free SoCo. But if you have something against those bands and free liquor, we suppose there are some other ways to while away your time, and we've got the picks of the latter waiting below. (Motorhead's playing the Vice thing(!), Robyn's playing the Filter party, etc.) If you're plotting the [...]

2008 is the year I restart my imaginary and torrid love affair with Jemina Pearl. A few years ago I swooned and she kicked my ass to the curb, and now I'm back for a second helping with the release of Be Your Own Pet's second LP, "Get Awkward" on Tuesday. The result of this re-attachment will probably be exactly the same as last time. Once again I'm reminded that Jemina and the band are beasts too wild to be tamed. It's punk rawk that's simple, effective, emotional, and a whole lotta fun. The title of the album, [...]
This is Filter Mag's top picks of who to go see at this year's South by Southwest Festival. I think their selection is pretty great, really. Here ya go. WEDNESDAY MARCH 12th @ Antone's (213 W 5th St) Simian Mobile Disco - 8:00 p.m. Lightspeed Champion - 10:00 p.m. Sons & Daughters - 11:00 p.m. The Kills - 12:00 a.m. @ [...]
" Fon tasies." -- Matthew "Fluxblog" Perpetua, correcting Pseu on the pronunciation of his pledge card ode to Gene "We gotta keep Mike's phone busy, 'cause otherwise he's gonna start telling August about weird movies, and we don't want that to happen." -- Tom, trying to thwart corrupting Lukas Moodysson and Werner Herzog dissertations with pledges "Amoeba, very nice store. Very hard to shoplift from that store. Very hard." -- Tom on the tight security at the West Coast independent music retailer "Jerry Reed is doing [...]

Let's keep the ticket giveaways coming! This time we have a hot little pair of tickets to see Nashville teen garage sensations, Be Your Own Pet . This bouncy group of adorable kids have set the world aflame with their hyper-punky anthems, and they'll be playing the Doug Fir this Friday , alongside The Raveonettes . Not only that, but they wrote a song about my second favorite movie ever (number one being this perfect work of cinematic excellence ), the Beyond the Valley [...]
Be Your Own Pet "Becky" - Teenage girls break up their friendships every day, but somehow, it's always the end of the world. Nevertheless, even though that sort of thing is very commonplace and fraught with ridiculous drama, the topic seems to be rather under-represented in pop songs. Be Your Own Pet run with the scenario, and play it for laughs by emphasizing the mundane details of high school life, and pushing the situation to a silly extreme by having the story play out as a bloody revenge fantasy. Jemina Pearl absolutely nails the tone -- [...]
I don't know if it's because Maggie is from Austin, or that spring break has only recently begun to coincide with it, or that I really don't like hoards of people (probably a combo of all these and more to be truthful), but I've never been to SXSW . I remember it from tales of yore; so much so, that I feel as if I have been there every year for the last 22 or whatever. Anyway, this year - I go. The problem is that of any music lover, [...]
I know, it's only been a week, but since I don't have any excuses for my laziness anymore, I feel guilty. Which means, this is going to be a ridiculously long post with lots of music. I don't have much time, so a few sentences about each albums/songs/whatever should be doing it. Here we go: New Goldfrapp album Seventh Tree - old news, I know. Still, it is awesome. It's nothing like Supernature,
