Beach Fossils are kind of surf-popists minus the beach. The Brooklyn based band is all bleached-clean guitar and tin-can vocals, but somehow they sound more like Real Estate than any other contemporary acts. "Lessons" is off the B-side of their upcoming 7-inch, and it could be an easy song to overlook simply because of the fact that it fits a bit too snuggly into the current low-fi, indie-rock landscape. But, once you get past just how stock Beach Fossils can sound, what you see is a hint of the darkness and discontent that colors their sound.

Beach Fossils' Dustin Payseur has promised new material from his band will take a turn for the edgier, so we were a little surprised when "Shallow," the band's latest 7" single on Captured Tracks, sounded, um, exactly like a Beach Fossils song. We're a little more excited by that track's b-side, "Lessons," which plays up the band's new-wavey interlocked guitars and motorik drums into something a little darker and more interesting. Last week, indie rock group Beach Fossils released a brand new single titled "Shallow," a 7" which is set to be released later this month. Today, the band did the inevitable and let loose the b-side to the upcoming single titled "Lessons," which you can listen to below along with "Shallow." The "Shallow" 7" single is set for release on Febuary 21st via Captured Tracks. As Beach Fossils continue to fine tune their sophomore record, they have released 1st single, "Shallow" to the masses. It contains a lot more "full" sound than we're used to hearing from the hazy beach indie rockers. I always thought they needed that extra "umph" in their music and this track finally delivers on that. If they can keep churning out tunes likes this, I think they have the potential to be have the same kind of break out this year, to which Real Estate had last year. 'Shallow' is the A-side to the new 7" from Beach Fossils. It will be released February 21st via Captured Tracks . The release will also feature another new song titled 'Lessons', and is the newest work from the band since the release of last years What A Pleasure EP. Both songs are welcomed additions to Beach Fossils catalog and both have a fuzzier, edgier sound to them - maybe you could say a little more grown up sound.

Brooklynites Beach Fossils are working on their sophomore record, which the band say is set to challenge the safeness of current indie rock. 'Shallow' is part of a forthcoming double-A-side single, and while it's still dreamy and a bit fuzzy, it packs a lot of bite. A definite sign of good things to come, 'Shallow' is out on February 21.
