Danish pop-rock/indie innovators Mew are set to release their new full-length CD, No More Stories Are Told Today I'm Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories The World Is Grey I'm Tired Let's Wash Away (perhaps the longest album title in awhile, right?) on August 25. The first single from the album, "Introducing Palace Players" exhibits the band in a new and improved form. Extracting their pop sensibilities from the now classic record, Frengers , and utilizing their aptitude for incorporating tinges of shoegaze into their works, the new CD demonstrates a mature sound that [...]

Beaches, Boats, Booze, BBQ And Back Again We were out of town for the past five days doing some serious chillin' at our lakeside summer spot. We are getting back in the swing of things in all capacities plus we...

Our meeting at Triple R left us feeling immediately immersed in the scene here in Melbourne so we were itching to sample it for ourselves. We got an opportunity to hear some local Victorian bands (FYI: Victoria is the state where Melbourne is situated) the first night (Friday) in The Corner Hotel. Deerhunter were playing their first, sold-out show of their Australian tour and two Aussie bands with almost Google-proof names were supporting: Beaches and Songs . One of the few colloquial differences we found was the usage of [...]

Last night I paid a visit to my local picture palace to see Ken Loach's latest film, Looking for Eric . Having enjoyed The Damned United earlier this year, I was looking forward to seeing a football-themed film from a director whose work I have admired for some time. The Eric of the title refers to the fictional postman at the heart of the film and also to Eric Cantona who appears as himself. I was never a fan of his Mancunian football team, but I was a big fan of Cantona the footballer and Cantona the [...]

If you could soup up a DeLorean and travel back to 1989 to ask 17 year-old not so Free Man where he would be living in twenty years, he would have probably told you Charleston, Savannah or New Orleans. One of those old genteel port cities of the South, slowly crumbling into the sea. One of my many problems as a 17 year old was that I spent far too much time in my own head - a place of fantasy and a hyperactive imagination. As a 17 year old boy from the suburbs, the reality of those cities would [...]

Day 3 of 'Voluntary' Underemployment -Number of cigarettes smoked: Incredibly, still zero. -Number of Panadol taken in the vain effort to stop the pounding in my head: 17 -Hours spent wondering just what the hell I am doing: Oh, thousands. And I was at work for half the day. I made the mistake, however, of taking Boy Z down to what I can best describe as the third circle of hell - Westfield Marion Shopping Cente r. I learned two things in hell. One, after two weeks of school [...]
I was right when I said that Chesil Beach was full of rubbish , with a coastal litter survey for the Marine Conservation Society today finding 385,659 individual pieces of litter on 374 popular beaches. Over a third of that comes from the public. Lots of worthy comment in this article about needing dedicated litter reduction plans, incentives to recycle and so on, but one thing that may help are a few bins. I don't remember seeing any on Chesil Beach (admittedly, it's probably not so easy to install them there).

"All this machinery making modern music can still be open hearted."That line is from " The Spirit of Radio " by Rush and has always been sort of a guilty pleasure. Saint Etienne cleverly sampled the song's intro for the track "Conchita Martinez" (from the LP So Tough ). Rush's lyrics speak of magic music at your fingers bearing a gift beyond price – almost free. The song explores the wonder of music and the integrity of the suits that profit from others success - all in hopes that the [...]

Matthew Mondanile is the lead man for the band Real Estate , and solo man on the project Ducktails . Matthew Mondanile pretty much rocks. There seems to be quite a backstory for the guy too, which I'm trying to sweep together piece by piece as well. But it's easy to find out how great his music is. Check out a clip of an interview he did for Viceland : It's a basic tip, but it sounds like a good one. Yeah. So at New World Hot Dog [...]
Day 1 of a three-day trek to the Florida panhandle with Bobby Ubangi.

You have probably guessed that if I'm doing a series of posts with bad song, it is going to get increasingly worse before... well actually it isn't going to get better any time soon. Sorry. Look don't blame me. I am only the messenger. Ok the advanced warning is given, time to insult your ears with this musical homage to another player, which like yesterday with Juninho , is regarded as a messiah at the club. You don't need me [...]

Your tax dollars at work America. Thanks for the memories.

We have finally tasted what those Melbournians are getting quarterly and it tastes pretty darn good. Summer Tones hit Sydney for the first time and what an amazing show that was. My night started with Lawrence Arabia (the pseudonym of James Milne) and he seems to have the formula for the perfect pop track. The infectious "Apple Pie Bed" or "Fine Old Friends" complete with its twee riffs and coy lyrics are a joy to witness. Even during "I've Smoked Too Much", Milne's soft-rock tunes are filled with nostalgia [...]

Cabo da Roca is Europe's most westerly point. Well, Cabo da Roca is continental Europe's most westerly point. Europe's most westerly point is in Ireland, Iceland, the Azores or French Guiana - depending on perspective. The land to the north of Lisbon, around a town called Sintra, is forested and mountainous. These uplands stretch on to the coast, ending at Cabo da Roca, which is about 140 metres above the ocean. Getting there is remarkably easy - it's something of a tourist attraction, of [...]
