The drought is over! The prodigal music industry employees return! While they're all nursing their hangovers (both from alcohol and tacos) and sleeping all day because they had a 6AM flight back from Austin on Saturday night, we will jubilantly rejoice at the first good shows in what seems like a long, long time. Take this Wednesday night at Union Hall. Las Robertas are from Cost Rica, so you're not going to get a lot of chances to catch these guys. Their fun mix of punk and 60s girl group inspired music will make for a FUN Wednesday [...]

In the epic Friday night court battle of Real Estate vs. Bruar Falls, Bruar Falls won the jury's hearts on account of it probably being less packed. It was still very crowded, but I'm glad that my friends and I didn't miss the dance party that broke out when Beach Fossils played their set around midnight. Seriously, that band gets better every single time I see them. It was my first time watching Eternal Summers, and I completely fell for their simple drums and guitar rock. No pedals or effects, they just rely on good songs and musicianship. The [...]

This is a ridiculous show. The entire line-up is full of my favorite up-and-coming bands. What makes it even crazier is the Real Estate/Family Portrait/Liam the Younger/Big Troubles show happening simultaneously just down the street. So why does this one get my pick? Beachniks are unpracticed but cute. Total Slacker's Tucker is a rocking guitar player, busting out jazzy solos like he's single-handedly going to save art rock. Air Waves are one of my perennial favorites and one of the most genuine songwriters out there. Beach Fossils keep getting better and better every time I see them, and it seems [...]

I took some photos at the Death By Audio show this past Monday. You should go over and check them out . It was Pop Jew's Purim party (what a sweet holiday), and the traditional costume-wearing brought out a lot of funny outfits. Tough Knuckle s were up first, and though they had no costumes to speak of, I was mildly intrigued by their sound. Their singer had a fun way about him, and their tunes are incredibly sparse in a cool way. However, they were painfully out of tune at times and seemed mildly out [...]

Lots of familiar faces at this show. I really can't resist a good So So Glos performance when I see one, and I do love The Sundelles. Beachniks are interesting at the very worst. But really, the best thing about this show is that I've heard rumors that it's a Purim party. So grab your costume and head to Death By Audio! Monday: Beachniks + My Teenage Stride @ Bruar Falls 8pm FREE [ info ] If there's a better way to kick off the week than to attend a free show please let me know what that might just be. Tonight Cake Shop is opening its doors wide to anyone over 21 for a free show featuring some very solid acts. We really like both Beachniks and My Teenage Stride, and seeing both for free on a Monday seems like a no brainer to us. It should to you too! Beachniks [...]
Yes In My Backyard is a semiweekly column showcasing MP3s from new and emerging local talent. Lo-fi sunshine stealers Beachniks make music so radiant, enthusiastic, and joyful that it's almost co... Continue reading "Hungover at Coney Island with the Beachniks (Plus MP3!)" >
Grizzly Bear (feat. Michael McDonald) - "While You Wait for the Others" ; Last we saw Michael McDonald he was tormenting the staff at SmartTech in The 40-Year-Old Virgin . Never did we think we'd find something he did musically cool, but for whatever reason Ed Droste and the rest of Grizzly Bear had him come down to sing the B-side of the same single. Turns out it worked really well and McDonald's voice definitely lends the song an air of something different without taking anything away from it. To be fair this would probably be a [...]

Beachniks - "Coney Island" When we made up the Captured Tracks label profile , we noted that the band Beachniks , featuring members of German Measles and Crystal Stilts, have a 73 due on Captured Tracks . So it's probably a safe assumption that this track, posted by the folks at Pinglewood , is likely to be from that forthcoming release.

It may be September now, but the Summer Of Rad continues. Here are Beachniks with a fun-kissed tribute to Surf Avenues's sideshows by the seashore. Roll up!

No need to feel like a second class NY-er for not going out of town for Independence Day this year. If you're around, might I suggest the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival ? Two of the city's best vinyl-centric labels (with help from Todd P) are bringing together some of the best garage/lo-fi/psychedelic bands in the country, playing over the course of two days. A combined two-day ticket is $25, but if you had to choose one day ($15) I think you'd have to go with July 4, what with Ganglians, Woods, Beets, Real Estate, Thee Oh Sees, Dum Dum Girls, [...]

I'd never seen Crystal Stilts before, so I was pretty excited when my Thursday plans fell through, freeing me up to make my way on down to Cake Shop to check them out. It was the last day of April, which at Cake Shop means that anyone with an April birthday gets free admission, two free drinks, and a slice of cake. A pretty sweet deal, if you ask me. I can't wait until August 31st (my birthday month). Anyways, the birthday party feel definitely carried over into Crystal Stilts' set. They had so many friends in the [...]

Crystal Stilts are playing this Thursday at Cake Shop. Definitely not to be confused with Crystal Castles and sort of not to be confused with Crystal Antlers, Crystal Stilts play an update 60s-style garage rock. Think lo-fi with beachy vocals laid over it. They have some darn good stuff, and even though they'll be playing in the city a bunch in the coming weeks, Cake Shop is probably one of the best places you'll be able to catch them. Beachnik s, whom I've seen at Cake Shop before, are also playing. They, too, play lo-fi garage tunes, and [...]
