1. Lotus Plaza - Spooky action at a distance (Kranky) De alguna manera, Lotus Plaza es a Lockett Pundt lo que Atlas Sound a Bradford Cox. O [...]

Jason Frank Rothenberg It's a matter of public record - or at the very least Google index - that I was no fan of Dirty Projectors' last record Bitte Orca , even though objectively speaking it was obviously one of the albums of 2009. However, one of the nice things about a band as obviously talented - no way am I arguing that point - and creatively restless as they is that each new album is akin to a blank slate. So yeah, I'm giving their [...]

Beachwood Sparks - The Tarnished Gold By Alex Ward The summer is obviously on its way. But for Los Angeles based Beachwood Sparks , it has already arrived. Being the first album the group has released on Sub Pop records for 11 years, you cannot stop from feeling excited. Sub Pop was of course the record label that released Nirvana’s first recordings, so this should mean great music guaranteed. But hold on there, it’s not what you may expect from Sub Pop. Track [...]
When a band goes on "hiatus" and then goes ghost for ten years without a peep, it's usually assumed that that gap isn't going to end anytime soon. That said, there's always an exception to the rule, and LA quartet Beachwood Sparks are back after a nearly 11 year hiatus with The Tarnished Gold . Those worried about the huge amount of time spent apart shouldn't worry; the spacey country rock here is the type the band's always worked with, a sort of timeless melodiousness, a breeze that floats from one era to another. Early [...]

I love summer nights. Although I cannot stand the heat... I must admit that I LOVE Cali summer nights. Bike rides, beach days and cool ocean breezes lofting through my window = Heaven. Water From The Well - Beachwood Sparks The Tarnished Gold 2012 (Sub Pop Records)
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Jim Goodrich Beachwood Sparks ' new album, The Tarnished Gold , is the country-rock band's first LP in a decade, during which the group dispersed to grad school, other musical projects and life in general. Yet even though the band broke up, Beachwood Sparks was never really finished -- just worn out from the road after releasing two LPs and an EP in the [...]

Rhye's debut single , "Open", could very well be my favorite track of 2012 if I were in to ranking things. It's such an addictive song, you can't just listen to it once. The song was out in February, yet my love for Rhye's sound has not been diminished. I can't get enough of the jazzy jams which is why it's awesome that you can now stream the other two songs off of Rhye's debut EP. The full length album has yet to be announced, but I'll gladly let you know when I hear about it. Until then enjoy these. [...]
It's really good to have these guys back. Last week while watching the 'Beachwood All-Stars' set at the Fleetwood Mac tribute in LA, I was reminded of how the band really knows its way around a cover - specifically their left field re-imagining of Sade's "By Your Side", a highlight of their sophomore album, Once [...]
The eyes have it -- Ty Segall Band release Slaughterhouse . I've been taken out of the game for a bit, thanks to Sasquatch! Music Festival (with editing nearly 5k photos) and a new job. There have been some great releases I've lost out on in the process (Fiona Apple's latest, for one), but I couldn't pass up this week's great releases from Ty Segall and DIIV, even if we have to keep it short. Other notable new releases come from Sonny & the Sunsets, the return of Beachwood Sparks, The Flaming Lips, [...]

After our blathering on endlessly about Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons and Jesca Hoop over the past few years you might think that we're pretty much done. Not quite. Both have released rather amazing new albums this week and we're guessing that by the end of the year we'll probably be writing (and talking) about them again. They're that good. This week we also see the return of fine SoCal retro folk band Beachwood Sparks and the excellent third album [...]

1. Beachwood Sparks – “Forget The Song” (Over a decade has passed since we last heard from Beachwood Sparks but they return with their new album Tarnished Gold , out this week on Sub Pop and their familiar sun-soaked melodies and psychedelic brand of country-leaning folk is bolstered by guests such as Ariel Pink. It’s like they never left but I hope we don’t have to wait another decade before the next album!) www.thecalmingseas.com [...]

The legendary Beachwood Sparks were caught on film thanks to the amazing music site Yours Truly . Here, they talk about the essential camaraderie and deep friendship that exists between the band — whether they’re making records or not. As a kid I used to see all of these guys play in different groups around the L.A. area, especially Brent Rademaker. The discography that has been created among these individuals has influenced bands all over the world and really defined an exciting time in my adolescence. Tarnished Gold [...]
