Recent popular indie music has seen a trend towards creating electronic, or seemingly electronic compositions, that use minimal instrumentation and R & B influences to convey warm or sometimes icy artistic vision. James Blake, for instance, croons over big beats and subtle guitar and keyboard work, creating interesting space in the crevices of his songs. On their newest record, The Ways We Separate, the Brooklyn based pairing of Thomas Mullarney and Jacob Gossett, better known as Beacon, attempt to create a spaced out and ever evolving series of tracks that convey a distant future, yet have immediate impact [...]

Sure, it was a Wednesday night, and sure, the show didn’t start till 9 pm, but you’d have thought there would be more people around to see Beacon ’s first show in Chicago since the April 30 release of their first full-length album, The Ways We Separate . While it may be their first full album, the duo has been busy, releasing two prior EPs within a year of signing to Ghostly International. There was a decent crowd for opener Taught Abroad , whose set looked as [...]
This has been a good year for bands making music that might ostensibly be referred to minimalist R&B. In addition to great offerings in that vein from the likes of inc. and Autre Ne Veut, we also have The Ways We Separate from Brooklyn art-synth duo Beacon. We recently premiered the video for “ Drive ” — which is itself a kind of homage to R&B videos of the past — and I had the chance to sit down with the duo to talk about, among other things, how they aren’t really an R&B band [...]
The Ways We Separate is clean, consistent, and impactful musically and sophomoric lyrically. Its consistency sometimes teeters on redundancy, and its cleanliness sometimes teeters on stagnancy, but not quite. Ghostly International, 2013 8.7...

Here’s the video for Brooklyn SynthPoppers Beacon ’s excellent single Drive . A swirling slice of moody, emotional electronica with a haunting swing to it. Will Joines directs the clip, which is amazingly beautifully shot in brooding tones. It’s as enigmatic as the track itself. Photo by Bebe Besch Freshly signed to Sub Pop, Rose Windows have wasted no time making gentle waves with their "hard-hitting hippie" style of psychedelic Sabbath-influenced rock. "Wartime Lovers" is a tambourine tangled track with harmonies that swirl and captivated to boot - singer Rabia's deep and melodic voice soothes while stirring distant collective memories of stormy desert plains as much as thick Edenic forests.[ Spin ] Today brings news of a bonus track from Daft Punk [...]

For Beacon's track "Drive" from their debut full-length The Ways We Separate , the BTW alumni enlisted 101lbs. Pictures to create a smoky, dark clip. But instead of crafting something run-of-the-mill, they drew from another genre's tropes. Says Will Joines of 101, "I was interested in taking elements of a R&B video and making something darker and more mysterious. The goal was to suggest and imply while leaving room for the audience to insert their own story and ideas." Check out the video and fill in the blanks below. Read More...

UK producer Michael Greene (aka Fort Romeau) has just shared a brand new remix of Holy Other's "Held." The original single is taken from Manchester producer debut album also titled "Held" released last year. Romeau's treatment doesn't mischaracterize the original. In fact, it respects the the essence of "Held," only adding a groovy bassline and a great vocal work. For what we read on Greene's soundcloud account, he made this this work while touring together with Holy Other, and finally here's a mastered version, and 100% free download. As you may already know we're big fans of almost everything Fort [...]

How slick is too slick? For Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett, two Brooklyn art students who teamed up to make music as Beacon , questions of love and loss are best tackled under a dark sheen. The outfit's debut LP The Ways We Separate simmers as bedroom music for troubled couples, grouping R&B and dance music together into a smoky pop hybrid. As sleek as The Ways We Separate may be, it wants for adrenaline. Webs of sound grow in patterns that quickly become familiar. Mullarney's slight tenor neatly fits Gossett's knack for electronic grooves, but [...]
