I'm going to come out and be honest about Lo Keys: I didn't think he was fit for my type of music. Not that he wasn't good enough or that there are standards on the site, but I just wasn't feeling it, yet. I have this ultimate bias against new rappers that bugs the hell out of me. If they don't show me that they're more than just about females, drugs, and haters, then I have no place for them. It's as simple as that. Though, once they're actually mainstream, it's completely different. I don't know why and I can't [...]
Lambo Lo and Gliss link up for the official video "GoodWood Beads" off of Lo's previously released project The Front Street Cafe . The video was shot on location at the legendary 5 Pointz in Queens, New York. The Green Hornet mixtape Coming Soon
The other night, on the far side of a safe number of drinks, a friend asked me how long it took, if ever, to truly get over a lost love. A year? Five? Never? Funny she asked me that, as I've been listening to Elbow's "The Bones Of You" a bit recently 1 , and the song tells the tale of a successful businessman suddenly derailed "When out of a doorway the tentacles stretch Of a song that I know". Before he knows it, he is catapulted backward: And it's [...]

Kyle aka Smoke Room (formerly Young Henry ), was kind enough to send over a couple tracks that he's recently been working on. 'Knock, Knock,' knocks the ear drums with a fortifying beatific rift of top of the world little house on the prairie melodies and deep low pitched sampled bass vocals; it's an instant banger. 'Beads' drives the reverb up into a soundscaptual layer of glitchy chopped samples subdued underneath korean pop vocals and draining chordal synths. Only 18 years of age, he's going places. Check out his soundcloud for more his sounds. [...]
It's a fact: Kansas City loves to play dress-up. In a flash of glitz, glamor and old-school N'Awlins pageantry, the Top of the Bottoms at Crosstown Station on Saturday night boasted some of the... Continue reading "Kansas City busts out the beads, masks and jazz at the Top of the Bottoms Ball" >

* It's no Pirate Bay, but The Free Music Archive , a project recently launched by WFMU, can be a veritable treasure trove of free and legal music, if you know where to look. With my abundance of free time I was able to pursue much of the 6,000 song catalog and found more than a few releases of interest, including a limited edition EP by the San Fran garage/psych band, Thee Oh Sees , live sets from The Box Elders , Cheetah Chrome , Psychedelic Horsesh*t , Parts and Labor , [...]
Beads - " Evil " I'm subscribed to a number of daily music podcasts, and while I listen to as much as I can, only rarely does a song grab my attention. One of these attention-grabbers, though, was Beads' song "Evil". I don't know what exactly it was about the song that grabbed me; maybe it was the aching, bluesy feel, the slow, deliberate pace, or even the Beatles-esque vocal breaks, but whatever it was, it's been in my head for days. The Seattle band's debut album No One Knows [...]
Elvis Perkins ::: Photo by Abbey * The Local Natives - Daytrotter Session I think these guys are the next big thing out of Silverlake. Believe me, I have. * The Rural Alberta Advantage - Hometowns Postal Service-y electronic tunes with an alt-country twist...why didn't someone come up with [...]

This week Drake shines the spotlight on his native Seattle, featuring two acts from his hometown and one from his home label. While I kind of disagree with him a little about Face Control , (I'm still more of a Plague Park man myself), it's a bit of a moot point, as I wouldn't really rank either as desert island material. The new one from Anni Rossi on the other hand, could easily make my year end list (which I usually don't actually do), and as a result, I'll be posting a little [...]

Snow and Garnet Keim's new project, and The Blakes' new tour/EP Well it's been a very busy month for brothers Keim and The Blakes. Earlier this week, Snow and Garnet released the debut album for their new musical vehicle, BEADS , entitled No One Knows . Check them out at their MySpace page to hear four songs. While there's no scheduled tour for BEADS, last night The Blakes kicked off their North American tour in Portland and announced this after the show: We had one of [...]

BEADS is the personal project of one half of the Blakes ' brother duo, Snow Keim, and his debut record No One Knows hit local shelves this week. The record begins with a mix of vintage sounding acoustic rock songs, with Beatles era touches abundant. In a reverent and almost nostalgic way though, and not weighing too heavily I think. Fellow-Blake-and-brother Garnet capably lends some downright astounding harmonies to that effort. As the record progresses it becomes a more delicate affair and a completely different animal than we've seen from these gents before, yet overall I [...]
