Outside of Four Tet, another album that has been on constant repeat for me is Beach House's Teen Dream . Yes, I know, a bit behind the times as the album leaked a few months ago and the hype on this band is bigger than what I remember for Wavves and Vampire Weekend. I decided to wait a bit before listening to the album and I regret not buying into the aged hype which is totally deserved. This album is like Washed Out but dreamier, slower and more magnetic. It's the Fleet Foxes of dream pop [...]
Waiting for a new Portishead album can get a little old. There was an eleven year break between their last two albums. At least we got this to help with the waiting. Its a new side project from founder Geoff Barrow along with Billy Fuller (Fuzz Against Junk) and Matt Williams (Team Brick). The album has [...]

Regular readers will have heard me banging on about the wonderful Downdime many times on these pages. I've always wanted to get my musical mits on one of their tracks in particular, 'Backpedalling' as it contains a mini Kraut section that I've always wanted to elongate. About a year ago they chucked me the parts & said: 'Get on with it you filthy urchin'. Due to a number of factors (mainly incompetence) this remix has remained mainly in my head. Until now. Here's our version of 'Backpedalling' (Part 1, part 2 will be available once I [...]
Yesterday at the record store, my coworker Mike and I were cleaning out hundreds of promo CDs from behind the counter. We wound up listening to a lot of stuff we'd been meaning to check out or just otherwise looked interesting, including BEAK> (on his suggestion). Apparently Geoff Barrow from Portishead is in the group, [...]

Instead of resorting to the usual twee-indie visual of putting a fucking bird on their CD cover , the Bristol-based art-dub trio Beak went one better and simply named themselves after the most important part of the avian anatomy. Any band that mixes the hazy drone of Neu! and early Public Image, Ltd. is bound to make my goosebumps have their own goosebumps. Some of the songs on their self-titled debut are drastically sparse in their Metal Box [...]

So finally, here is my list of "must-hear" albums from this year. I'm a little late to the scene but hopefully you guys aren't exhausted of these yet. I'll keep it easy on the reading part. I wasn't sure what to call this list, but I think that "best of" and "favorite" are overused since any one person can only listen to a tiny portion of all the albums that came out this year, and one person's favorites won't exactly match another's. So I tried to pick some of my favorite albums that are a bit obscure but [...]

Beak> - "Backwell" The first three minutes of "Backwell" is all drone and subtle throb, sloooowly building up a tension that breaks suddenly into an intense, panicky groove. From there on out, a busy synthesizer riff takes the lead, as a crisp beat keeps the piece moving toward an endless horizon familiar to anyone that's heard a bit of Krautrock. Beak is a side project for Portishead's Geoff Barrow, and it's already had a direct impact on the work of his main band, yielding the impossibly brilliant charity single "Chase The Tear." The Beak material [...]

Lead by Portishead's Geoff Barlow , Matt Williams on keys and Billy Fuller on bass Beak> is a new trio from Bristol who just released their debut on Ipecac Records. The band has some pretty rigorous guidelines in place. They record all their music in one room and they don't use overdubs. The band wrote their entire album over the course of one 12-day session. In a statement about Beak>, Barrow says, "It's really good to create music under different conditions than you're used to." Pitchfork [...]
BEAK> were formed in January 2009 by three Bristol musicians, Billy Fuller(of Fuzz Against Funk), Matt Williams (of Team Brick) and Geoff Barrow (of Portishead). The band have very strict guidelines governing the recording and writing process of their work. The music was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, only using edits to create arrangements. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in SOA Studio's, Bristol. stream the full album below Backwell by BEAK> contuine reading to see three live videos of [...]
Despite being a slow week for music, there's still a few bands with some great releases out. The first band we're looking forward to is Person L, whose Kenny Vasoli from the defunct Starting Line had pop-punk ... After it took Portishead ten years to make their third album, their output is picking up at a rapidly. Geoff Barrow hooked up with Billy Fuller and Matt Williams to form the band Beak>, and their debut album is pretty awesome. It's got some Deerhunter aesthetic to it in the drums and bass ("I Know" especially), which is why I said I'd call it Atlas Sound day... well, I guess Deerhunter day would make more sense. Whatevs. I'd label the album as progressive rock, but it has a lot of slower moments, so maybe just rock [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: BEAK> - S/T words: Jamie Milton - originally scribed for gigwise When you move to other places, it's best not to sound like there's still a part of your old home in you. Geoff Barrow is the focal point of BEAK> a Bristol-based project united in the goal to record thought-provoking, wide-ranged music. Barrow is very much the central figure due to his work most recently with The Horrors' on sound-reciprocating breakthrough ' Primary Colours ' and his very own [...]
