Suggested NYC Concerts The Best Indie Shows Hand-picked Each Week Photo credit: Shervin It's already Hanukkah and nearly time for Christmas, which means holiday parties and time off from school and work in the very near future. In some cities, I'd imagine that this could be a slower time of year for music. Not as many bands are on tour so you don't get the big names, right? Well, this is New York City so that doesn't [...]
Even as Passion Pit's glittery Gossamer is laden with dark themes, and it dips into some pretty dismal territory -- lead singer Michael Angelakos has been open about his struggles with bipolar dis

Because Thursday, Day 3 of CMJ, was a literal marathon ( I saw SEVEN bands ) I'll try to keep each artist description down to just a few lines. First, at around 5pm I peeked into Rockwood Music Hall, a rustic, intimate venue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I caught the tail end portion of Kris Gruen 's indie folk set. He's got strong but cozy vocals, and a stunningly tight and seasoned live show that seemed far too good and spot-on to be showcased on such a small stage. After him came goodbye motel , [...]

2012 has seen the release of some terrific music. Folk rock found resurgence in the form of Barna Howard, Hip Hatchet and Angel Olsen. J. Tillman invented Father John Misty and offered poignant, tongue-in-cheek criticism of the current musical climate in a release so accessible and laden with guilty pleasures that it proved tough to put down. It took a legend like Bobby Womack to make an argument that there remains room for new strides within classic genres like R&B and soul. It has also been a strong year for experimental synth pop with releases from Purity Ring, Hot Chip [...]
Locally-rooted post-punk band Circa Survive are releasing their fourth album, Violent Waves, next Tuesday on August 28. The album was a total DIY effort - the band did not bring in outside producers on this one, and are self-releasing it. They will be holding two album release shows in their hometown of Philadelphia this weekend ... Continue reading

It's up for debate as to whether it's a positive or negative aspect to the current state of music but to find a band with a truly diverse sound is a rare find. Sure it's great to put on an album such as Nootropic from Lower Dens and immerse yourself in it's hip-chillness which vaguely transforms itself from track to track, the downside to albums like that is it makes most bands feel one-sided and leaves those experiencing it with very low expectations for the future of such bands and [...]

This fall, GZA will embark on "The 64 Squares Tour" (named after his affinity for chess ), where he'll be joined by Killer Mike , Bear Hands , and Sweet Valley (the production side project of Wavves' Nathan Williams). Williams, who previously joined forces with GZA for a thrashing version of "Liquid Swords" on FUSE , will also support the intellectual MC on stage as a guitarist. The tour kicks off on September 14th in Buffalo, NY, and hits Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and beyond before wrapping up on October 18th in [...]

![HOT CHIP, CHROMATICS, HERE WE GO MAGIC [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4391453_lg.jpg)
While it's going to be very difficult not to think about this Friday's release of The Dark Knight Rises all week, there are some very worthy detractions in concerts from Hot Chip , Chromatics , Field Mouse , Here We Go Magic , Bear Hands , and more. Hot Chip is sold out, but I added a pre-searched Craigslist link below to help you on your way to electro pop heaven. Meanwhile, our #1 concert of the week is actually two, from Portland, Oregon band Chromatics [...]

Surprise, three new tracks.

Fort Lean conceptualizes sonic escape in a parallel utopian world where you can still see the skyline but not hear any cars, and the weather is always perfect. Isn't that Portlandia? The band just announced that they will join Deli NYC favorite Bear Hands on a summer west coast tour - they'll be playing The Knit on July 20. - Read Dave Cromwell 's interview with the band here .

Jon Krop I don't think anyone necessarily expected anything more from Redd Kross than what they'd been offering since reconvening after a decade apart in 2006. Which is to say sporadic live shows - mainly at festivals like NXNE 2008 - where they made their fanbase feel like they were teenagers again by way of their prototypical Californian bubblegum power-pop, as captured on classics of the genre like Phaseshifter and Neurotica . Nothing wrong with that, not at all. But there's also nothing [...]

“Food is the new rock ‘n roll.” - Justin Warner, chef at Do or Dine “A knife, a fork, a bottle and a cork /That’s the way we spell New York.” - Escort, “Cocaine Blues” “You’re going to what?” The Great Googa Mooga doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but “music," “food," and “festival” do, and that’s about all I needed to tell people about the eponymous inaugural festival this weekend in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. If that wasn’t enough to win over the skeptics, I broke it down by the numbers: 75 [...]
The Great GoogaMooga has arrived! Sounds like an enormous gelatinous horror from beyond, right? Well, you’re wrong - it’s much more pleasant. And what’s so special about this festival? Well, aside from being totally free to attend, GoogaMooga gives food and drink top billing, with music playing second fiddle. Don’t think for a second, though, that the music is simply there to provide a soundtrack for eating delicious edibles and drinkables. The Roots are playing on Saturday, and what better to match with their funky beats than eating drummer Questlove’s own [...]
