Today, we continue our Lollapalooza 2011 countdown with part three. #6: Black Lips The Atlanta punk band makes their second return to the festival this year, but a bit different from last time around. Back in 2008, the somewhat lesser-known Black Lips bounced onto a major label the year prior, performing most of 2007's Good Bad Not Evil in a very early afternoon show. Four years later (although with a few different members), the group is a little more refined [...]
The Southern Fried duo unveil their jam-packed summer schedule
Though the term indie can include broad sounds, ranging from Flying Lotus to Joanna Newsom, some groups have a sound that exudes everything that indie has traditionally meant over the last twenty years. Jangling guitars, lo-fi recording, bells and horns, twee vocals - Gold-Bears has it all. Coming off like an American Los Campesinos! or a more-legit Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (who are, after-all, their label-mates), Gold-Bears will find an easy home with anyone who liked indie rock in the 90s or anyone who was cool with Death Cab before Transatlanticism - that is, Are [...]

Today, we continue our Lollapalooza 2011 countdown with part two. #8: Ratatat One of the more impressive acts of last April's Coachella, Ratatat will carry the torch as the first act in a new Lollapalooza tradition - closing out the night on a sub-stage. In previous years, two opposing large headliners and a Perry's Place headliner were the only three options for festival goers. However, with the continual expansion of the park's perimeters, organizers added a fourth option. The Brooklyn duo with four albums to their name will [...]

My annual vacation is almost a week away. But, like always, I give a top ten countdown to my most anticipated acts of Lollapalooza . And, as it is with every year, there are certain preferences that make this list. For instance, regardless who all the headliners are, it's impossible to see them all. So, not every giant act will be here. Let's start with #10. #10: The Glitch Mob As I learned last year, Perry's Place has a lot more to offer than the usual festival-goer would suspect. The music is nearly [...]
Adult Swim has been promoting some fairly decent music lately, alongside their summer singles series and occasional free mixes (available on their site ), they've been pushing through Cerebral Ballzy , a Brooklyn punk band akin to 80s era hardcore styles. It may not be everyone's taste, but for those who do, fairly awesome. Listen to their debut album and watch the video for "Don't Tell Me What to Do" below, courtesy of Pigeons and Planes . Cerebral Ballzy - Don't Tell Me What to Do

This Dum Dum Girls track hit yesterday, but it's still very much worth mentioning. Their new song "Coming Down" is another continuation in the band's young career in a very (understated) positive direction. One day in, and it's easily one of my favorite songs of the summer, if not the entire year. You can grab the group's upcoming album Only In Dreams September 27, via Sub Pop . Listen below or grab the download from Sub Pop here . Dum Dum [...]

Maps & Atlases latest video for their Perch Pathcwork single, "Isareli Caves," serves as an alternative version of the Goldilocks story. The difference between the orignal story, and the Maps & Atlases' version, is that the latter shows the bears doing the thieving, while a small boy is the victim. In order to defeat the bears, the young man creates a list, which includes the following points: (1.) Get Strong. (2.) Learn Kung Fu. (3.) Locate cowardly thieving redneck bears. (4.) Become Ninja. (5.) Exact Revenge [...]

You've heard the album , you've read the rave reviews , now see the man himself. Evening Man will be making his live debut on August 7th at Church in Boston, part of an evening of high culture brought to you by your friends and family at BEB. In keeping with the theme, the night will be a showcase of local talent, from the turntable wizardry of Fens and Soren Jahan, to the spaced-out soundscapes of Sonnymoon . Locally grown, fresh as hell, limited seating. $8/18+ Doors open at 7 [...]

Everybody do the Bear hug! The 2 Bears aka Joe Goddard ( Hot Chip ) and Ministry of Sound radio show host Raf Daddy, have a new single out called ' Bear hug '. Its a funny and happy little song which no doubtedly will get people on the dance floor putting their furry pals on themselves and each other. " It gets lonely in the woods but right now I'm here in the hood, let's have a bear hug. " Check out the track and video [...]

It seems Kristian Mattson, better known as the Tallest Man on Earth , has leapfrogged pretty much every artist outside of Radiohead in the, "Makes Me Jump Out of Bed" category of music; pretty odd to say of a folk artist, in that respect. Adult Swim premiered the sixth song in their 2011 Singles Program with Mattson's heavily anticipated "Weather of a Killing Kind." For fans aware of the Tallest Man on Earth sound, its yet another solid example of his no-doubt-about-it excellent craftsmanship. For those who haven't heard him [...]
Late last week, the Strokes released the B-Side version of "Taken for a Fool," which by now everyone knows features Elvis Costello (who came out for the song's performance during their last Madison Square Garden show). Well, the group finally premiered the actual video for the song a few days ago (arguably the best track on Angles ). Green screen in all its visualizer glory. The Strokes - Taken for a Fool

Photo by G. Be Grateful I know I complain a lot about how 99% of the world is being controlled by the tiny 1% and nobody seems to be doing anything about it. And I complain only because it's true and since I am in a position to use my voice, I exercise that right as often as possible (and I encourage you to do the same). What I want to say though is that in spite of it all, I am very grateful every [...]
For the video for "Baby's Arms," the second single off of Kurt Vile 's fourth album (second with Matador ) Smoke Ring for My Halo , director Todd Cole shot the entire Los Angeles video on a Windows Phone for quality that seems too good to be from an actual phone. You can also check out the behind the scenes shots below. Kurt Vile - Baby's Arms Baby's Arms - Behind [...]

Metronomy - The Bay (The 2 Bears Remix) Yaz and I had a conversation a little while back about how more and more artists were starting to wear masks (e.g. Go Go Bizkitt, Bloody Beetroots, DeadMau5, etc). Being that neither of us are psychologists, we couldn't come up with any motivations, but we did at least come to the conclusion that it's a pretty consistent indicator of fantastic musicians. Well, 2 Bears really took that thinking all the way to its conclusion and literally dress up as two bears, head to toe. They also happen to [...]

IT FEELS SO GOOD! I just can't stop listening to this gorgeous rendition of "The Bay" by cuddly sounding duo The 2 Bears. The groove, the bounciness and the personality in this remix gives every bit of justice to the original. The Bay comes off Metronomy third album, The English Riviera , released April 2011. Metronomy - The Bay (2 Bears Remix) And just for a compare and contrast, there is another wonderful remix of The Bay by Erol Alkan (best known for his [...]

Happy Fourth everyone. For today, I thought I'd offer something a little different; a free mixtape (haven't done that in a while). The songs don't have any particular Fourth of July tinge or any super-American inflection behind them. They're just a bunch of songs that fit particularly well for summer 2011. You can check out the tracklist and grab the download below. So, enjoy. 1. Surprise Hotel - Fool's Gold 2. Vibrationz - Javelin [...]
New video from Metornomy "The Bay". It was directed by David Wilson and taken from their new album 'The English Riviera'. I also make sure to check out The 2 Bears Dance/Beat heavy...
