We've been away for a bit. Call it what you will – compassionate leave, or whatever else – but it felt good to escape the internet, if only for a brief while. Don't get me wrong – I find music to be the best method of utmost escapism, though there comes a point at which another extraneous tweet re: Random Access Memories accompanied by a panoramic iPhone shot taken from the apex of The Shard may just prick your rage, tip you over the edge and condemn you to the murky dregs of madness. I was getting there on Monday, [...]
This scene unfolded earlier this week at the Shanghai Wild Animal Park during the park's "Wild Animal Olympics." The video shows a bicycle race between a bear and two monkeys quickly turning grisly as a crash winds up with the bear mauling one of the monkeys. I'm not going to say the monkey had it coming here, but would you cut off a black bear on a bicycle and expect to get away with it?

On Wednesday night in the quiet town of Truckee, California (fun fact: home to the Donner Party), a bear crept into the cab of an unlocked truck, parked at a home on St. Bernard Drive in the Tahoe Donner neighborhood and, in typical bear fashion, took a dump. The above photo was snapped by authorities, who quickly released the bear after realizing it could not exit the truck after the door closed behind it. The Sacramento Bee indicated "significant damage to the interior of the truck" and that "bear scat was also left inside." The local [...]

Don't run away from Bears! Bears! Bears! I love bands with exclamation points in their names. It gets me frothy. Bay Area indie rockers Bears! Bears! Bears! have released the new album, All...

On their debut LP, All Dressed Up With Nowhere to Go, Bay Area post-punk revivalists Bears! Bears! Bears! intimately chronicle soured relationships, identity crises, and personal inadequacies in 10 gloom-and-doom dance tracks. Phillip Cala (vocals/bass), Ricky Rios (guitar), and Evan Leal (drums) formed Bears! Bears! Bears! in 2008, shortly after the dissolution of Batman Parade, Cala's high school four-piece. In 2010, the trio released their first EP, What I Do In the Dark, which was praised by Performer Magazine as "a refined take on something simple; the familiar made better." Their recently released debut LP, All Dressed Up With Nowhere [...]

With the industry in full throttle and the Imposition on the road to SxSW, we hardly know where to begin. How about a weird Tim & Eric directed video for Beach House's "Wishes" starring Ray "Leland Palmer" Wise, or catch Animal Collective's videos from their Terminal 5 performances with the relaunch of Centipede Hz Radio, and as seen on TV; Andrew W.K. is now the official commercial spokesman for Playtex's new 'Fresh + Sexy' freshen-upper wipes for his...
British Sea Power strike again with more of their neverending positivity! "Machineries of Joy" is an uplifting tune which reminds us to stay true to ourselves and that "help is [...]
Music usually comes attached to a story. That story can make a piece of music more interesting to you, providing valuable empathy that ties you indelibly to it, but it can also cloud your perception to its detriment. Leaving you unable to focus on anything but the story, the associated facts, rather than the music at hand. There is no story attached to this song. A Quiet State are the anonymous side project to a band that we don't know the name of. So you just get the music. It's a slow build. Over five [...]
I've told all of you the things I connect with about Eliza And The Bear, the alt-folk quintet from London. Their latest A/B single sticks to those loveable parts - soaring choruses that turn into shout-worthy singalongs, pretty melodies backed by touches of brass and chimes, lyrics that romanticize youth and explore self-doubt - and [...]

Words by Keya Muk There is something indeterminably exciting about Snakadaktal . The young Melbourne based band were getting some serious radio play back in Australia with their debut single ‘ Chimera ’; an intelligently crafted indie pop record that was both obscure and extremely promising. Their first official UK release is an AA-single of willowy siren song ‘ Air ’ and punchy pop anthem ‘ Dance Bear ’. Their ability to retain a sense of naivety while experimenting with some surreal sounds gives them an air of mystery without making it appear [...]

If Flying Lotus was Toro Y Moi he would be Dream Koala if that makes sense — ¡Toast! (@RapGameMaxFisch) January 25, 2013 ...not sure that does make sense and if you want to be dismissive of this kid because he's called Dream Koala in 2013 that's understandable, but this soothing new song from the young Parisian producer is a remarkably warm and tasteful navigation of dreamy guitar-pop and hypnotic bass music that demonstrates a ton of promise for an 18-year-old kid. He also just played [...]
Here I am, left to go last once again with my favorite songs of the year. I feel as though I listened to more in 2012 than in any other year, and my musical experience was all the better for it. More music means more candidates, which admittedly makes lists like this one tougher. But [...]

At the end of the year it often seems like I'm too busy with the big albums of the year and end of forgetting some lower profile releases. Here are some of the albums that we think you may have missed, but are still pretty awesome... 10. Hiss Golden Messenger - Poor Moon (Tompkins Square) [...]

Each year I shun Christmas music like it's the plague. It begins too early, is far too repetitive, and, quite frankly, is a bit boring. That is, until this year. It began with "The Week Between", a new track off One Christmas at a Time , an LP that finds Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick (The Long Winters) collaborating for a full album of original Christmas music. My thoughts began to change. If this song can be so amazing, what about other [...]

Combining an honest approach, with modest tendencies, this is the debut album by the electronic duo.
