If you aren't already, it's time to follow The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle on Tumblr — his blog is as witty and entertaining as one might expect, and he updates it fairly frequently. In particular, it was interesting to see him recently post a photo of a very young version of himself at a Nick Cave show. It turns out he's quite the Cave fan, and that seeing The Bad Seeds play on the tour in question was quite the formative experience on both Darnielle himself and on [...]
I've been constantly humming Telstar's "Karate Luv" since it was first played to me at a particularly intoxicating desert jam session back in April. The trio recently unveiled their DIY video for the track and which immediately brought to mind the humor and creativity of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" video; not a bad thing at [...] The post Weekend Videos: Telstar - "Karate Luv" appeared first on Cougar Microbes .
Right now, Titus Andronicus and the So So Glos are on the so-called "Bring Back The Dudes" tour, bringing sweaty and messy punk-rock singalongs to bars across this great nation. And both bands came together onstage to end a recent set at the New Orleans venue Siberia. The So So Glos guys drunkenly paid homage to their home borough (and Titus's adopted home) by covering the Beastie Boys' deathless " No Sleep Till Brooklyn ," tweaking lyrics while appropriate, while Titus frontman Patrick Stickles wandered around smoking and shaking a tambourine. This show looks fun as fuck, and the So [...]

Titus Andronicus and The So So Glos: bringing back the dudes BY JORDAN MAINZER REWRITE BEGINNING. SEE EMAIL What's left to say about Titus Andronicus at this point? At least that's what I initially thought. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that the Glen Rock, New Jersey band’s show on May 4th with fellow Brooklyn DIY punks The So So Glos and Chicago-based but originally from Brooklyn band Sharpless (who sound like some sort of Thermals/Screaming Females hybrid and who [...]

The closest I've come to reaching an understanding with death is this: death is a long echo. It’s deafening at first and as soon as you think the echo has faded, some thing comes along and pings it back into your life. And when death creeps into music it’s like an echo chamber. Maybe it rattles in the rests of Jeff Buckley songs, or lives inside Notorious B.I.G.’s words, or hangs on every Elliott Smith note. Chuck Klosterman tried to write about the mysticism of death in rock 'n' roll in his book Killing Yourself To Live , only [...]

As you might have heard yesterday, Brooklyn, N.Y. officially has one of the best parks in the world: Adam Yauch Park. That's right, the NYC borough renamed one of its parks after the late Beastie Boys rapper, who passed away tragically one year ago today. And during the dedication ceremony, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horowitz gave a moving speech that might leave you feeling choked up if not in tears. I don't blame you if you just listen to the Beasties for the rest of today. Watch the speech below.

Yesterday, New York Parks & Recreation opened the Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights, on the same site that the musician, producer, humanitarian and MC used to play as a child. It's a year on from the artist's untimely death from salivary gland cancer and much respect is still being paid to his life and work, who under the moniker MCA along with Mike 'Mike D' Diamond and Adam 'Ad-Rock' Horovitz, founded the legendary NYC hip-hop act Beastie Boys . Hundreds of artists and bands as diverse as Coldplay, [...]
