The strength of Medicine Show No. 3 is the reckless abandon with which it dives deeply into style after style, sometimes in ways that don't exactly work but nonetheless manage to attach themselves together. For some, this will be an eye-opening redefinition of African music. But it's not for first-time Madlib listeners.

A couple of months back, Stone's Throw announced the kick off of the Madlib Medicine Show series , a once-a-month, twelve-CD, six-LP series. According to the site, the series "will be a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta's 4-ton stack of vinyl." The first installment, Before the Verdict , features a bunch of remixes and new tracks that serve as a prelude of sorts to the upcoming Madlib and Guilty Simpson full-length. [...]
i'm really behind in my film viewing, but last night i finally got about to watching michel gondry's be kind rewind . although it's gotten rather mixed reviews from critics, i absolutely loved the show, especially with its take on "sweding" in taking swipes at today's media industry's paranoia at copyrights and bootlegging, and of course some signature gondry scenes which were magical as always. the onscreen partnership between jack black and mos def is hilariously endearing (and sometimes annoying) in their efforts to "swede" or remake the films that black's character jerry erased ("you're magnetized!" being [...]

Download: Madlib "Sacrifice" (off Beat Konducta Vol. 5 + 6: a Tribute to J Dilla on Stones Throw)
Requiem as defined by Webster's Dictionary, a musical composition for the dead. That is what comes to mind when listening to the Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6 A Tribute to Dilla album for me. It is a somber and sobering repose for arguably one of the greatest contributors to hip-hop music ever. For those of you [...]

Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to... is a 42-track piece dedicated to the late J Dilla, and is set to drop on February 10, 2009 via Stones Throw Records . The piece itself is a dedication from Madlib and J. Rocc, who were arguably Dilla's closest musical compatriots during his time spent in Los Angeles, California. Post from: The Galley Boys Madlib Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6

The new, all-instrumental, 42-track disc is set for delivery on February 10 and will act as a tribute to Madlib 's great friend and labelmate, the late J Dilla . The disc, whose volumes are nicknamed Beat Konducta Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite and Beat Konducta Vol. 6: Dil Withers Suite , is the CD version of the limited vinyl double LP pressing, which will also be available from Stones Throw. Have you picked up any of the records from the Madlib "Beat Konducta" series? The record nerd in me was always curious about the origins of the various covers. I always thought it was pretty fucking amazing, and I know I wasn't the only one that shared the sentiment. The origins have finally been revealed and sure enough, the story about the cover is just as interesting as the cover itself, (you kinda knew it had to be). If anyone is wondering why it looks like [...]
Genius n. 1. Exceptional intellectual ability or creative power. 2. A distinctive or prevailing spirit, as of a place, person or time. So I'm sitting in my room last night, lit up like Christmas, watching Woody Allen's Manhattan . I know people are all about Annie Hall but that's the easy choice-out of his 70s dramadies, Manhattan is by far the most complete film. The photography, music, acting, script...if this was Woody's one and only movie, he would still be [...]

My friends, treasure these. They won't be around for long. Back in the day when people actually bought music, an attractive, interesting eye-catcher of an album cover could go a long way. You can ask any crate-digging DJ worth his salt how far a cover can go in convincing he/she to pick something up. But as we went from LP to cassette, from cassette to CD and from CD to non-descript MP3 files that we can just pull out of the air, the need for album art (in terms of selling a product) became about as essential as [...]

Here's a track off Madlib's upcoming album King of the Wigflip featuring Talib Kweli. It's going to be a DOPE album, stay tuned as its set to drop September 30th!

This is fresh: DJ Spock Finding Inspiration: We couldn't get by this fun flick of Spock mixin' it up... I mean, the guy is everybody's favorite alien science officer! The funny thing is that it made me think of California's Madlib . If you don't know this guy, you should seriously check him out . He's got some great mixtapes out [...]
Besides being one of the most prolific producers of our time, Madlib is easily one of the hardest working producers in the music business right now. After releasing the third and fourth installments of his Beat Konducta series as one project, Beat Konducta In India , last year, the great Madlib produced the Erykah Badu hit "Healer" earlier this year and recently released another stellar jazz-fusion project with Ivan "Mamão" Conti, under the name Jackson Conti. You thought Madlib was spent for 2008? Think again, because it looks like the fall is going to be an excellent season for [...]
