Strangely enough, it wasn't the move of Black Keys drummer, Pat Carney, from Akron to NYC, or the seemingly imminent relocation of bandmate Dan Auerbach, which led me to start taking stock of all musicians who have departed the Cleveland-Akron Metro over the past year. Rather, it was the less publicized breakup of Cleveland rock mainstays Coffinberry , spurred on by bassist Tony Janicek move to Portland. For those of you not scoring at home, here's a list of some of those who have left NEO in the past year: JR Bennett of Unsparing [...]

Pandas are big in music these days. Must be their mating habits that lend to a build up of tension, and artistic expression. Bad Panda dropped this Growsound guy into my email a while back and I sorta slept on it, because I got caught in a submarine, smuggling yogurt covered almonds into Russia. It's a short story with a long ending, but I'm happy to say, Growsound has arrived. But will he live up to the hype? Or better yet, will his hype man wear neon? All fantasticness aside, Growsound is well on his way to mastering [...]

DRUMMER , featuring members of the Black Keys, Teeth of the Hydra , Beaten Awake , Houseguest/Six Parts Seven , Ghostman, and Sandman , will be supergrouping your ears off at the great Southgate House on January 23. Joining them will be The Lion's Rampant , and Guitars . If you [...]
Filed under: Video of the Day Artist: Beaten Awake Video: 'Thunder$troke' Highlight: The guys embark on an ocean voyage resembling something out of a psychedelic kid's show.
Beaten Awake's video for "Thunder$troke" is a trip in the truest LSD dropping, kaleidoscopic colors surrounding, mind expanding sense of the word. The story line goes something like this: The boys in the band, travel by rocketship, car, and any fantastic means possible to meat up with their fearless caption, Beaten Awake lead singer, Jon Finley. They embark on a journey across blue and green seas under bright purple skies. Storms come and go, but Finley's disposition is always sunny, smiling behind the wheel of his little, yellow boat. A mix of live-action, animation, and puppetry [...]
Director and animator Mark Wiitanen created this new video for Beaten Awake , Thunder$troke , which is the same name of their new album on Fat Possum . Buy it on Amazon. The band is in New York this week, playing Trophy tonight and Monkeytown in Brooklyn tomorrow.
Greetings folks! I hope your week has been good. This week we have our first segment added to the show, but I haven't named it yet and I can't think of anything better than blast from the past. I'm sure you can tell which track it is in the tracklisting by that little hint. Enjoy! Beaten Awake - Suite Cheetah Old Canes - Little Bird Courage Tom Waits - Singapore(new live album) Loch Lomond - Wax White White Flight - Panther This Moment In Black History - Nailed To The Cross Frodus - [...]
If you're currently in New York, this week's Friday Mixtape will probably see little love - why listen to something on record when there are thousands of bands, many of which are featured on this week's Mixtape, performing live, at a venue near you? But for everyone, hopefully this week's mix of new singles, remixes, covers, and mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out will help curb some of that jealousy. You know, the jealousy resulting from not being about to see the thousands of bands, many of which are featured on this week's Mixtape, performing [...]

++The 1921a ( listen here ) consists of a group of friends who met while working together at McCabe's Guitar Shop. They make music out of toy pianos and modified steering wheels, and share custody of a library of music that includes the work of 11 blind guys . ++Awww. Look at all the newborn mp3s . Here's my pick: Beaten Awake: Coming Home.mp3 Beaten Awake also sound grunge to me. Is this the start of a trend? [...]

Hey, if you've been watching the RSS feed, you know I just did some serious housekeeping with the Drake's Takes , and now, for a brief moment, I'm back up to date (we'll see how long that lasts). This week, Drake spotlights the new one from The Flaming Lips , but if you've been reading bumpershine closely over the last couple of months, you know that last week I was most excited about the US Release of Fanfarlo 's brilliant debut "Reservoir". -ed. We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases [...]

Beaten Awake played one of the Donewaiting.com Three Year Anniversary shows. Doesn't seem too long ago, but year seven anniversary is coming in February.... Damn we're getting old. ANYWAY... The band has a new record out on Fat Possum, and here is the title track for your downloading delight: MP3 : Thunder$Troke They've got a few shows coming up, too: NOV. 18 CLEVELAND, OH [...]

I just have to pass ONE more song along from this new Beaten Awake record. It's like everything that is great and pure about rock n roll has been balled up and stuffed into this one tune. (Hyperbole much? OK, that was a bit dramatic...but you gotta love the local heroes. They are all doing it for the love of the ROCK). Featuring underdog lyrics like "Up from the bottom is where I shine" and then building up to a fist pumping fever pitch, just play this one really, REALLY loud - for me. For [...]
Go ahead, be cynical. The first mention Small Black on Pitchfork came with the disclaimer , " Live, they ( Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyne) add Pitchfork.tv contributors Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin to the mix." Personally, I'd urge you to put aside your conspiracy theories for a moment and give "Despicable Dogs," a fair listen, for in its four minutes you'll find an abundance of warm keyboard sounds presented in the framework of DIY styled, New Order synth-pop. MP3: Small Black - Despicable Dogs [...]

kent, ohio's beaten awake are an interesting lot. well, interesting in the musical sense, im not sure how interesting they are as individuals. the dudes that make up beaten awake have been doing up the local kent scene in bands like harriet the spy, the party of helicopters, the man i fell in love with, and "new" terror class. all of whom, i have never heard of, but if you're from the area you may have an idea of what beaten awake are all about. for those that arent, i'm not gonna be much help as per usual. [...]
Well, at least for two days, it is. In the past 24 hours, the Pat Carney side project, Drummer , has seen their video for "Feel Good Together" featured at both Stereogum and Pitchfork , Kent's Beaten Awake had two singles featured at RCRD LBL, and Cleveland's Hot Cha Cha received a complimentary record-release preview from the local alt-weekly, Scene . My Google Reader hasn't seen this much NEO Rock 'N' Roll action since that one time the Raspberries' Eric Carmen appeared in that police video and [...]

Enjoy an unintentionally B-themed Three for... with lots of free music! The Blakes - Garage rockers The Blakes have returned with another helping of DIY rock 'n' roll on what is their second widely-available album, Souvenir , though the Seattle trio have been steadily recording music since their formation in 2001. The new record doesn't really expand much on the band's simple guitar-rock formula, but what they lack in invention they make up for in hook-filled, pop-rock songs with rough, unrefined edges that are [...]

If there is one Ohio band that I would really love to see break through to some sort of commercial success, it would Kent's Beaten Awake. These guys play an infectious, melodoic sort of garage rock that is so easy on the ears. And if you ever get a chance to see them live, go for it...such a great bar band! Here is one of my favorites off of their brand new record - which I am currently playing into the ground - 'Thunder$troke.' * 'I Shot The Mayor, Not [...]

We're rapidly approaching the point of no return for releases this year, but mid-October always seems to toss a couple wrenches in folks' year end list plans. The latest from The Flaming Lips fall in that category - you think Pitchfork might want an amendment to their 'Best Albums of the 2000s'? Toss the new one from Neon Indian in as well, in that regard. Elswewhere, there are fine/interesting/worthy releases from Har Mar Superstar , Thao and the Get Down Stay Down , The Heavy , Erin McKeown , Fanfarlo [...]

Not quite the stellar lineup of releases this week, but there are still some great records to be had with The Flaming Lips' latest, Embryonic leading the pack. Also not to be completely overshadowed are releases from Thao Nguyen , Neon Indian , Imaad Wasif , Grant-Lee Phillips , and Fanfarlo who's debut finally get a proper US release after being available digitally for what feels like forever. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have missed. [...]
