this new primer covers what you could call the "post-slint" side of post-rock; these are bands that tend to start quiet then get really loud then get quiet again. they tend to be on very good terms with their distortion pedals. they tend not to involve singers. they are frequently exhileratingly predictable (i went through a phase of being "off mogwai" because it always feels like you know what's coming next, until i realised i wanted to hear it anyway). they tend to have very muscular bass sounds. i like all of those things. ::: [...]

This week, we're spreading the word about two great albums with two very different views of pop. First up, we've got Offend Maggie : the new Deerhoof LP. Tempo changes, weird melodies, obscure lyrics, odd time signatures: when it comes to writing a song, nothing is off limits for Deerhoof. Though it's obvious they don't play by the same rules as most bands, they still find a way to make their music delightful, bright, and extremely captivating. We've also got new music from Vivian Girls, Mr. Scruff, and the Miserable Rich. Not to mention a [...]
Someone should really tell Australia's Because of Ghosts to sound their size. They're a three-piece band, but they come off as being much larger. Is it because they play at mind blowing volumes--no. It's because they understand the dynamics of sound. Each song grows into a sweltering mantra of guitar chords and percussion that doesn't sound too unlike Godspeed You! Black Emperor. However, when it comes to pulling together their subtle and intricate sounds, the band stands on their own. There isn't much in the way of studio trickery, guitar effects, or string sections, but it [...]

Spod – Cats I bet there's a lot of bands who wish they had Spod's Teflon coating. There's something far stronger than irony at work here: it's like this thick, muddy coat of humour that's so far managed to prevent him from becoming just the local Har Mar Superstar franchise or a pointless exercise in popular culture references. The trick is sincerity. Here is a dude is having way too much of a good time to worry about anything as boring as context or criticism*. That's [...]
The Silent Ballet: Volume 8 Spring 2008 After several compilations romping through various related fields, Volume VIII returns to what this compilation series began with in Volume I, bringing the post-rock hits. The current edition brings together tracks from some current albums we're enjoying at the TSB headquarters and ones that should be making some huge waves [...]

Because of Ghosts: "Bright Things Come to Confusion," from The Tomorrow We Were Promised Today LP (Feral Media/Inertia, 2006)

Did you know instrumental is an anagram of "Lunar Mittens"? Yet another instrumental session is upon us, this will be a bumper issue as there will be a lack of mentaling next week (I apologise but holidays come first!). Bit of a mix today, with instrumental only tracks from Interpol and Spiritualized , and an acapella Bjork (this counts as the other end of the spectrum from instrumental). First up though I would like to introduce Amiina , a band from Iceland who you have all heard but never knew [...]
"Because Of Ghosts have been performing their own brand of instrumental music since late 2002. After some well received demos, brothers Reuben, Domenic and Jacob independently released 'Make Amends With Your Adversary Before Dawn'. This record gained an international release with Japanese label Wonderground Music. In 2004, the band independently released 'Your House Is Built On A Frozen Lake'. This EP established the band's strong Melbourne following and widened their fan base nationally." Because of Ghosts [...]
Now that the Top 25 has been kicking around for a few days now I figured I'd post some thoughts as well as the bands that just missed the cut. Perhaps it was to be expected, but hip-hop was pretty absent from the list. The Herd did pretty well (51) but other than that hip-hop didn't really make much of an impact on the list. I'm not sure if this reflects the state of Australian hip-hop, or bloggers' taste. I have my suspicions. One of the great things about doing this list was [...]
