Another week has ended. If you fellas didn't get your dicks wet, well that's unfortunate. If you ladies didn't go out and hit the bars and settle for less than you deserve, I find that equally disappointing. Either way, sucks for you. Although it could be worse…you could be one of those people who doesn't [...]
Things I learned this weekend: Apparently it's grounds for an ass-kicking when you're black-out drunk at a bar and you tell a girl her boyfriend is "limp dicked" and ask her if you can "put a little baby in your tum tum." Good thing I was in a large group of people who would have [...]

It's been some time since I've posted on this blog and I am happy that topomodesto gave me the opportunity to put together a mix. In the face of algorithm driven mix generation I hope that there continues to be interest in crafting diverse listening experiences. What may start as a matter of convenience easily translates into common practice. Collecting and orchestrating music samples into coherent ideas may be perfected by professional dj's, but I find my interests don't take root until I search out the connections between songs and artists myself. And this invariably leads [...]
"When you were in Chicago in '97, is that how you initially met Steve Albini?" I ask Bubba. "Well, actually, I met him at a show in Minneapolis in '95, or something. And then we wanted to try recording with him. It was after Beheaded came out, and we went and we tried the studio—which [...]
I'm staying at the Quality Inn Market Center in Dallas. This weekend, it just so happens, is the annual Mary Kay convention. Makeup retailers from all over the United States have congregated here, on this very weekend, to…do something with makeup. I don't really know, exactly. I'm just expecting a parking lot packed with pink [...]

Bedhead — Disorder (Joy Division cover) From 4-Song EP 19:10 (Trance Syndicate; 1994) Lights are flashing, cars are crashing, getting frequent now

TUNDRA SCARS :: JANUARY 2011 :: MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS There's not much to love about winter. If (like me) you're up against the Eastern Seaboard, you're stuck with 3 months of gale-force winds, bitter cold, and slushy, salt-covered sidewalks. For those that share our pain and anguish (not you silly Californians), we whipped up ' Tundra Scars ', a mix of chilly, seasonable songs that have been getting us through these months. While Ben threw in some smooth R&B and mellow folk, I went heavy on the soul-crushing slowcore. It ain't [...]

Ponga play y disfrute.

Here's one by the seemingly British-but-were-actually-from -Texas band Bedhead , who long ago railed against the slo-core title, and later went on to become The New Year. I missed the train on them when they actually still existed, which for some reason makes reading about them seem somehow fictional. Like a pretty dream.: Bedhead: The Unpredictable Landlord.mp3 (bestestest. play loud.)

Portland, Ore.-based A Weather are presently waist-deep into their second U.S. tour, which is supporting the release of the slow-core revivalists superlative sophomore set Everyday Balloons [ review here ]. Everyday Balloons seems mildly obsessed with sleep, and the narratives all seem as if they could have been written solely about what can be seen from a bed by a window. The new collection is lusher, denser and even relatively kaleidoscopic compared to the stunning, quieter debut album Cove , which we named one of the best of the last decade right [...]

Tre Orsi recently popped up on the Matador Austin Compilation , though the band is a three piece from Denton. This is probably due to the fact that we'd like to claim them as our own due to their rocking live shows, and their powerful sound. The band will be releasing their album, Devices + Albums , on March 23rd through Works Progress Records . Production credits go to Bubba Kadane of Bedhead ( The New Year too) fame, so you know [...]

If you were to make a list of the twenty bands that influenced our musical taste, Bedhead would certainly be an integral part of that list. At a time when the feedback of My Bloody Valentine was segueing into the grunge of Nirvana, Bedhead taught us that nothing is more important that a perfectly crafted melody. Rather than hiding behind effects pedals and a wall of noise, Matt and Bubba Kadane wrote songs with so many layers of intertwining melodies, that they challenged the premise that "mellow" music was "simple". In fact, the emotional intensity of their [...]

As I mentioned yesterday, my attention this year, as far as music goes, has been diverted in a variety of ways. Doing a 2009 playlist seemed to miss the thrust of what my year was all about (and probably redundant with every other blog out there); doing a collection of old yet new-to-me stuff would have missed all the music that wasn't new to me that I spent so much time with. So instead I offer this: a 75-track playlist that comes as close as I can to giving some impression of what my listening year has really [...]
When I left work this evening, it was for the last time...well, at least for the next two weeks. Nicci returns from Alabama tomorrow, so I've taken the day off, and Tuesday off, before I leave for New York on Wednesday. It kind of sucks that she couldn't get the theater company to fly her from LA to Birmingham to New York, but I guess their contracts are pretty specific about her receiving roundtrip airfare only. Oh well. We've got like a day and a half together before we're apart for ten days again. At least this time I'll have [...]

ah the hidden treasures, lurking dusty behind shelves and in drawers and cupboards and shinyshinyboxes; in dvd cases, wrong cases, suitcases; used as bookmarks, balancing devices and in one case a stand for muppet toys. all these lovely treats hidden away for me to find as part of some elaborate logistical orwellian nightmare i call moving house. you know the book house of leaves ? you know the movie cube (and it's sequels (but not gleaming the cube))? that's my spare room. honest to christ. still haven't found my ted leo cd. have [...]

Image From Here Well, if there is one vice I have it would have to be smoking. I am a one pack a day kind of guy. I started smoking seriously late in life. Approximately 9 years ago, I started when I was going through my divorce. Looking back, I really don't know why I started the nasty habit. But I did. And now I am addicted to nicotine and can't go a day without it. I went for two months without smoking last year when I was in the hospital. But, the day I [...]

This one goes out to my friend pr0lix: Man, I can't believe the stuff I missed in 2008. I did not listen to any new music that whole year. All I can remember about 2008 is spending two months in the hospital....... I've posted before about the band The New Year and it is a band I truly love. I used to live in Texas and that is where these guys are from. The New Year are the same guys (Matt and Bubba Kadane) from the band Bedhead. After the release of [...]

Frank Yang If there's an advantage to writing about the same band for the third time in the span of a month, it's that rather than try and lay down some background, I can just point you here and here and voila - you're up to speed. If there's a disadvantage, it's completely running out of things to say. But I'll soldier on. Sunday night was the long-awaited album release party for Bruce Peninsula's debut A Mountain Is A Mouth and there [...]
