As you well know, Bedhead is one of my all-time favorite bands. When I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Bubba Kadane in Dallas during my cross-country voyage, I considered it to be one of the highlights of my trip. We spoke for almost four hours about the history of his bands and the changes that have occurred in his home state of Texas. I learned fascinating details about the formation of Bedhead, including stories about former members, most notably Marty from The Dixie Chicks, who played violin in the band containing Bubba, his brother Matt, and Mischo [...]
In October of 1998, Trance Syndicate Records released what would become the last recorded song by my beloved Bedhead as the b-side of a 2-song, 10-inch record. While a posthumous, long-distance collaboration with Macha would arrive two years later, the song "Leper" would be the final full-band studio document of Bedhead's 7-year life. Here's what they had to say about the 10" in the liner notes

"Never think you are as good as you are going to get, you can always be better. Be true to your own vision and be prepared for rejection. It has happened to us all at one point or another, only the most dedicated will survive." - artist , sas christian .out streamed your words. be my baby :: dm stith [demo, 2004] [...]

I was thinking today on my way into work: If I were to keep driving and not stop, drive to the nearest train station and decide to go somewhere and not look back I could. I guess that's one of the beauties of free will, I mean sure I would have to find another job or settle in another town eventually, but if I decided I had enough of Nashville and wanted to leave....I could. I'm not going to, not today at least, because frankly I don't have much of anything to run from. But it's nice to [...]

Bedhead's music was generally subdued, with a polyphonic sound based on the interlocking of single-line melodies played by three electric guitars and one electric bass guitar (often played with a capo), nearly always using clean (undistorted) tones - Wikipieda That kids, is what you and I would refer to as slo-core. I've long had an unhealthy obsession with slow, plodding, miserable songs. I've probably listened to Bedhead's Transaction De Novo well over 150 times, it was a point of obsession for a bit. I had the idea of making a [...]
There is a busy week ahead of me. There is a busy week ahead of us all, I suppose, but since this is the place where I write about myself, I am most comfortable asserting things about my own life. I hope you understand. Some of you readers are very nice, by the way. I just thought I'd throw that out there. I've never really said "thanks" for all your kind e-mails and such, and this is as good an opportunity as I can get, considering this is probably going to be a fairly successful mix tape. Speaking [...]

Bedhead: "Haywire," from the What Fun Life Was LP (Trance Syndicate, 1994)

image from here Days Long Past Long dark branches reach to the ground Branches like limbs shivering ever so fast Tremble the warnings that haunt the mind Tremble the memories of days long past She said many words but only two mattered 'It cannot be seen or even understood' 'You must let go of it now, you must you know' 'There is no hope [...]
As I write this, I'm watching Mike Lowell hit his second home-run against the Yankees in a hotly contested battle up in Boston. I had a good weekend, thanks for asking. There was socializing, drinking, seeing an old friend, and more. Oh yeah, and Obscure References is trying to put together a national tour. Well, I mean, we've done calculations. So far we contemplated an entire tour (or, as I called it, a "heist") where we pretend our gear was stolen every night (thus cutting down on our costs because we could drive our cars, and not have to rent [...]

Still going through the new music that gracing my ears and visiting some that are not so new.... Having a bass player by the name of Vern Zaborowski, qualifies these guys in my book. And the music is excellent, just check out the spazzy rocking ditty Navy Man and you will see what I mean. These guys have signed on with Suretone Records and the future is bright. This is a sprightly little tune from the Kadane Brothers, not the usual affair from the Slowcore pioneers. What Fun Like Was , their first album, is one of the best. Their current band, The New Year, will hopefully be releasing some new material soon - I am looking forward to that. mp3 To The Ground Bedhead - WhatFunLifeWas This is a new one, a nice little pop nugget from LA's The Broken West . In fact, the whole record from [...]
