!["Billboard" Looks Back On Pop's Proud Tradition Of Doling Out Free Advertising [Branding]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1250669_lg.jpg)
Billboard continues its coverage of the 50th anniversary of its flagship singles chart, the Hot 100, with a look at songs on its recently compiled all-time Hot 100 that have engaged in lyrical brand-dropping. Not surprising, there are a few hip-hop songs in the rundown ("Gold Digger," "Low," "Yeah!"), but a couple of older radio staples are also in there: the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive," which name-checks The New York Times ; Chic's "Le Freak," which mentions the New York nightclub the Savoy (confidential to Billboard —pretty sure the lyric is about [...]
. Somebody once asked me: "What do get out this blogging thing?" My immediate answer was: "To share the music," just about restraining myself from rounding off my statement with an emphatic "maan". My friend knows me as an obsessive mix-tape distributor, and so my agenda was understood. I might have added that I get a kick out of writing about music, hoping my prose and insights find as much

After all the glory of the 80s in the last few posts (yeah, Elvis is still going strong, but you get what I mean) I figured it was time for something a little more contemporary. Ray LaMontagne has been a bit of a blog darling for the last couple of years, so there's a good chance you're not going to find anything new here. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I've stumbled across something you don't already have. [...]

Actually went 48 hours this week without looking at a computer, hanging at the beach with the family (in a nice little chalet loaned to us by most generous friends). Dark clouds and wind-driven rain most of the time (until this afternoon). But that didn't stand in the way of our fun (as you see from the picture). Should probably be posting something from Laura Marling (for alas, she cannot swim). But the best I can do is this classic slab of salt water taffy: The Bee Gees - Sinking [...]

Today's treat is The Bee Gees ' Emotion served up reggae style. Short lived girl trio 15-16-17 , so named after their ages at the time, cut a sweet sounding 'lovers rock' version all under the watchful production eye of Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell . Somehow surprised that this one hasn't ended up on a Soul Jazz compilation yet and is a must for fans of Althea & Donna, Dawn Penn, Blood Sisters, Billy Boyo, Musical Youth, etc. Also included the sublime dub version too. 15-16-17 - [...]

This wasn't how this was supposed to be. I had six other songs all picked out and ready to go. Six brand-spankin'-new songs specially-designed to kick you in the ass and then rub it all better. So brand-spankin'-new they still had that new-song smell . Yep, no question, you would have loved 'em. But now you'll just have to wait. Because today, instead of those, we have these .... See, what happened was, I was going through my old mix CDs again (always a dangerous thing), and the song "Woman in Love" [...]

Airplane is one of my top five favorite comedies of all-time. 1.) Animal House 2.) Airplane 3.) The Big Lebowski 4.) Stripes 5.) Blazing Saddles. Not much of a soundtrack, but there is a great scene with the Bee Gee's song " Stayin' Alive ". I've already posted the Safe At Home and Sweetheart Of The Rodeo "originals." Now it's time for the "original" versions of the covers recorded by The Flying Burrito Brothers during the Gram Parsons era (1969-1970). [I realize that the Burrito's version of Wild Horses was released before The Stones' version, but it's still a Jagger/Richards composition, so that's close enough.] These "originals" show the R&B/Honky-Tonk/Rock mixture that inspired the Burrito's innovative country-rock style. From The Gilded Palace Of [...]

In June 1964, the Beatles flew into Australia for a tour that turned the island continent upside down. If the Fab Four hit America like a hurricane, they struck like a monsoon in the Antipodes. Not long after John, Paul, George and Jimmy (Jimmy?! Yes, that's right, Jimmy! But that's another story ) touched down at a rainy Sydney airport on the 11th of June, they were greeted by hundreds of thousands of Australian fans -- many of whom were recent emigres from the U.K. Several of these newly arrived Beatles-smitten folk, being equipped with a fair amount of [...]

Hey Jude - Wilson Pickett and the Bee Gees Sometime in the 70's where anything, apparently, was possible Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude" is one of my top 2 favorite tracks on the Duane Allman Anthology (Aretha's version of "The Weight" being the other), and so, in honor of cover Friday and utter musical randomness everywhere, I present you with Wilson Pickett, and for some reason, The Bee Gees, performing "Hey Jude." It still kicks its fair share of booty.

There's some unexpected advice for Gordon Brown - albeit wrapped in some supra-name-dropping - in this morning's Telegraph from, erm, Robin Gibb : 'Tony and Gordon are good friends, I like both of them,' he says. Blair, he insists, is a very proficient guitar player. 'We've jammed.' Brown, he says, is much more personable in private than he appears in public. 'Gordon has too many people telling him to be serious. In fact he is very contagious and infectious. He should show that side more often. People would respond.' Frankly, the idea of Gordon Brown [...]
Massachusetts - The Bee Gees This post of my Songs of the Fifty States series qualifies as the least 'countrified', starting right from the top with The Bee Gees and a song that showcases their knack for songwriting pre- squeaking, squawking disco era (1967 to be precise, and their first UK Number 1). Perhaps here I have succumbed and posted the most patent Massachusetts-related track, but it's a goodie and, to be honest, I didn't really bother searching much further here! The only other track...
